  • Combined performance tests before installation of the ATLAS Semiconductor and Transition Radiation Tracking Detectors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) Inner Detector provides charged particle tracking in the centre of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Inner Detector consists of three subdetectors: the Pixel Detector, the Semiconductor Tracker (SCT), and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). This paper summarizes the tests that were carried out at the final stage of SCT+TRT integration prior to their installation in ATLAS. The combined operation and performance of the SCT and TRT barrel and endcap detectors was investigated through a series of noise tests, and by recording the tracks of cosmic rays. This was a crucial test of hardware and software of the combined tracker detector systems. The results of noise and cross-talk tests on the SCT and TRT in their final assembled configuration, using final readout and supply hardware and software, are reported. The reconstruction and analysis of the recorded cosmic tracks allowed testing of the offline analysis chain and verification of basic tracker performance parameters, such as efficiency and spatial resolution, in combined operation before installation.

  • Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) end-cap
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented - these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

  • High-spin rotational structures in Kr-76
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 71:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Kr-76(36)40 have been populated in the Ca-40(Ca-40,4p)Kr-76 fusion-evaporation reaction at abeam energy of 165 MeV and studied using the Gammasphere and Microball multidetector arrays. The ground-state band and two signature-split negative parity bands of Kr-76 have been extended to similar to 30 (h) over bar. Lifetime measurements. using the Doppler-shift attenuation method show that the transition quadrupole moment of these three bands decrease as they approach their maximum-spin states. Two signatures of a new rotational structure with remarkably rigid rotational behavior have been identified. The high-spin properties of these rotational bands are analyzed within the framework of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Evidence for nontermination of rotational bands in Kr-74
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three rotational bands in Kr-74 were studied up to (in one case one transition short of) the maximum spin I-max of their respective single-particle configurations. Their lifetimes have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The deduced transition quadrupole moments reveal a modest decrease, but far from a complete loss of collectivity at the maximum spin I-max. This feature, together with the results of mean field calculations, indicates that the observed bands do not terminate at I=I-max.

  • Atmospheric Balloon Studies : A Collaboration Between Minority and Traditional Undergraduate and Graduate Institutions
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Minority University Consortium for Earth and Space Sciences (MUCESS), a collaboration among diverse minority institutions dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented students pursuing professional and research careers in Earth and Atmospheric Science and Space Science, were informed that they had been funded by NSF for a faculty and student research opportunity in atmospheric science. Among the institutions only Medgar Evers College, City University of New York had a prior program in ozone monitoring and a bachelor's degree in environmental science. The funding provided an opportunity to strengthen the initial team with the addition of G. Morris, Valparaiso University and B. Lefer, University of Houston as both had an ongoing ozone research program. The grant enabled MEC to continue their activities and the University of Houston-Downtown to increase the number of launches per year. South Carolina State University is able to strengthen their support system and incorporate the activities into both their academic and outreach programs. The opportunity to partner with G. Morris and B. Lefer will enable the institutions to expand their ozonesonde launches to include both tropospheric and stratospheric ozone distribution and transport. Faculty student workshops will be an integral part of the program as the activity will increase the scientific knowledge of the participants. The program provides an opportunity for minority students to pursue studies in the geosciences and develop the skills and knowledge to pursue graduate degrees in the discipline.

  • Comparison between early Odin-SMR, Aura MLS and CloudSat retrievals of cloud ice mass in the upper tropical troposphere
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 8:7, s. 1937-1948
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emerging microwave satellite techniques are expected to provide improved global measurements of cloud ice mass. CloudSat, Aura MLS and Odin-SMR fall into this category and early cloud ice retrievals from these instruments are compared. The comparison follows the SMR retrieval product and is made for partial ice water columns above 12 km. None of the retrievals shows a significant degree of false cloud detections, the ratio between local mean values from the instruments is fairly constant and a consistent view of the geographical distribution of cloud ice is obtained. However, important differences on the absolute levels exist, where the overall mean is 9.6, 4.2 and 3.7 g m−2 for CloudSat, SMR and MLS, respectively. Assumptions about the particle size distribution (PSD) are a consideration for all three instruments and constitute the dominating retrieval uncertainty for CloudSat. The mean for CloudSat when applying the same PSD as for MLS and SMR was estimated to 6.3 g m−2. A second main consideration for MLS and SMR are the effects caused by the poorer spatial resolution: a possible vertical misplacement of retrieved values and an impact of cloud inhomogeneities. The latter effect was found to be the dominating retrieval uncertainty for SMR, giving a possible mean value range of 2.3–8.9 g m−2. The comparison indicates a common retrieval accuracy in the order of 70%. Already this number should suffice for improved validations of cloud ice parametrisation schemes in atmospheric models, but a substantially better consistency between the datasets should be attainable through an increased understanding of main retrieval error sources.
