  • Isotopic yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep-inelastic reactions
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 6101:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We follow up on our earlier work involving a light projectile (Ca-48) to populate high spin states in neutron-rich nuclei with results from experiments involving a heavier projectile (Sm-154) fur the purposes of studying isotopic yields. These yields, which in some cases were mensurable down to a level of 0.1 of the total reaction cross section, are presented from three separate reactions. A trend in the isotopic yields towards N/Z equilibration is observed in one experiment having a large disparity in N/Z ratios between the projectile and target. In the two other reactions, where the N/Z driving force is less pronounced, the yields are instead clustered around the projectile and target nuclei. We present correlated projectilelike and targetlike fragment isotopic yields derived from gamma-gamma coincidences, a technique that enables one to partition the yield of an isotope according to the amount of neutron evaporation. Using this method we find that for the zero-neutron evaporation channel transfer occurs predominantly into the light fragment, consistent with the nature of the deep-inelastic mechanism. We further find that multiple-neutron evaporation contributes substantially to the yields of the isotopes.

  • Coal Comminution Characterization for Industrial Scale Circulating Fluidized Bed
  • 2002
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The management of the bed solids inventory and particle size distribution in fluidized bed combustors has long been recognized as a key factor for the efficient and trouble-free operation of industrial scale fluidized bed ombustors. From a coal particle to an ash particle getting out the circulating loop, the particle size reduction factor can be hundred. Detailed pilot scale test observations related to the size of circulating particles and ash particles, show very different behaviours for different coals. In order to describe those behaviours related to a large particle size spectrum, a general frame work is proposed based on several concepts. The key concept is represented by the Primary Ash Particle Size Distribution (PAPSD). According to this concept, Primary Ash Particles are liberated from the carbon matrix under the combined action of Combustion and Primary Attrition of the mother fuel particles. By Primary Attrition it is meant here a complex of particle comminution phenomena closely associated with the progress of reactions (devolatilization/char combustion), along pathways and with mechanisms that are extensively discussed by Chirone et al. (1991). Further (Secondary) attrition of ash particles can occur after char combustion is complete and is not associated with the parallel progress of chemical reactions but to mechanical attrition only. Those concepts are associated with coal characterization procedures in order to have information on the size reduction of a coal particle and the final size istribution of ash. The measurement obtained on a lab scale is validated by the analysis of some results of industrial-scale tests. In association with procedure definition, a qualitative approach allows prediction and inter-coal comparison. A modelisation work is also presented considering however that quantitative predictions of the particle size distribution inside a CFBC is still a far objective.

  • Synergistic relationships in algal-bacterial microcosms for the treatment of aromatic pollutants.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - 1873-2976. ; 86:3, s. 293-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential of algal–bacterial microcosms was studied for the biodegradation of salicylate, phenol and phenanthrene. The isolation and characterization of aerobic bacterial strains capable of mineralizing each pollutant were first conducted. Ralstonia basilensis was isolated for salicylate degradation, Acinetobacter haemolyticus for phenol and Pseudomonas migulae and Sphingomonas yanoikuyae for phenanthrene. The green alga Chlorella sorokiniana was then cultivated in the presence of the pollutants at different concentrations, showing increasing inhibitory effects in the following order: salicylate85%) was recorded only in the systems inoculated with both algae and bacteria and incubated under continuous lighting. This study presents, to our knowledge, the first reported case of photosynthesis-enhanced biodegradation of toxic aromatic pollutants by algal–bacterial microcosms in a one-stage treatment.

  • Presence and localization of connexins 43 and 26 in cell cultures derived from myometrial tissues from nonpregnant and pregnant women and from leiomyomas
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. - 0002-9378 .- 1097-6868. ; 182:4, s. 926-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE:Our objective was to study the appearance and distribution of connexins 43 and 26 in various human myometrial cell cultures.STUDY DESIGN:Scrape loading, Western blotting, and immunohistochemical techniques were applied to cultured cells derived from myometrial tissues obtained from nonpregnant and pregnant women (upper and lower uterine segments) and from leiomyomas (tumor and analogous myometrial tissues).RESULTS:Scrape loading revealed the presence of metabolic coupling in all tissues. Indirect immunohistochemical studies showed membrane localization of connexin 43 in all myometrial cultures. Western blots and indirect immunohistochemical studies showed the presence and localization of the connexin 26 protein and associated gap junctions in tissues from myomas and from nonpregnant and pregnant women except for those derived from the upper segment of the pregnant uterus.CONCLUSION:These results show that human myometrial cultures express various gap junction proteins and that there are regional differences in expression of connexins in tissues from pregnant women.

  • Systematics of high-spin isomers in N=83 isotones and a high-spin isomer beam
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 13:02-jan, s. 5-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomers in N = 83 isotones of Z = 60 66 were studied systematically. Their spins and parities arc,49/2(+) and 27(+) for odd and odd-odd nuclei, respectively. Nearly constant excitation energies of these isomers indicated a decrease of a Z = 64 shell gap energy as Z decreases from 64 to 60 within the framework of a deformed independent-particle model (DIPM). Their configurations are [v(f(tau/2)h(9/2)i(13/2)), pi(h(11/2))(2)](49/2+) and [v(f(7/2)h(9/2)i(13/2)), pi(h(11/2))(2)(d(5/2))(-1)](27+) for odd and odd-odd nuclei, respectively. The shape of the yrast status changes suddenly at spin 49/2(odd) and 27(odd-odd) from a near spherical to an oblate shape. Transitions from isomers are highly hindered because of the shape changes. They may be categorized to be shape isomers. The development of a secondary beam produced by using these high-spin isomers is also described.

  • Influence of the initial composition of algal-bacterial microcosms on the degradation of salicylate in a fed-batch culture
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology Letters. - 1573-6776. ; 24:7, s. 531-538
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of the initial composition of an algal-bacterial microcosm constituted of Chlorella sorokiniana and Ralstonia basilensis was tested for the fed-batch degradation of salicylate at 5 mM. Salicylate degradation was always limited by the O-2 generation rate, which was initially proportional to the algal density, but rapidly became limited by the availability of light once the algae started to grow. The decrease of the salicylate removal rate observed at high algal densities was likely caused by mutual shading within the algal population and the increase of O-2 consumption due to algal dark respiration. With repeated salicylate amendments, all systems converged towards the same characteristics, reaching an optimum rate of salicylate degradation at 1 mmol l(-1) day.

  • Continuous GPS measurements of postglacial adjustment in Fennoscandia - 1. Geodetic results
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 107:B8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project BIFROST (Baseline Inferences for Fennoscandian Rebound Observations, Sea-level, and Tectonics) combines networks of continuously operating GPS receivers in Sweden and Finland to measure ongoing crustal deformation due to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). We present an analysis of data collected between August 1993 and May 2000. We compare the GPS determinations of three-dimensional crustal motion to predictions calculated using the high-resolution Fennoscandian deglaciation model recently proposed by Lambeck et al. [1998a, 1998b]. We find that the maximum observed uplift rate (~10 mm/yr) and the maximum predicted uplift rate agree to better than 1 mm yr-1. The patterns of uplift also agree quite well, although significant systematic differences are evident. The root-mean-square residual rate for a linear error model yields estimates of rate accuracy of 0.4 mm/yr for east, 0.3 mm/yr for north, and 1.3 mm/yr for up; these figures incorporate model errors, however. We have also compared the values for the observed radial deformation rates to those based on sea level rates from Baltic tide gauges. The observational error for the vertical GPS rates required to give a reduced chi^2 of unity is 0.8 mm/yr. The time series do exhibit temporal variations at seasonal frequencies, as well as apparent low-frequency noise. An empirical orthogonal function analysis indicates that the temporal variations are highly correlated among the sites. The correlation appears to be regional and falls off only slightly with distance. Some of this correlated noise is associated with snow accumulation on the antennas or, for those antennas with radomes, on the radomes. This problem has caused us to modify the radomes used several times, leading to one of our more significant sources of uncertainty.

  • High-spin isomeric beam line
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 484:03-jan, s. 45-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-spin isomeric beam line has been constructed at RIKEN based on the inverse kinematics of fusion-evaporation reactions. The beam line provides high-spin isomers as secondary beams, whose intensity is more than 10(5) sec(-1). The characteristics and the present status of the beam line are described.
