  • The on-orbit calibration of the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2009
  • In: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 32:3-4, s. 193-219
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope began its on-orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft boresight alignments. Here we describe on-orbit calibration results obtained using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch. These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly released in August 2009.

  • Strained InGaAs quantum well vertical cavity surface emitting lasers emitting at 1.3 mu m
  • 2006
  • In: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 42:10, s. 584-586
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Results on strained InGaAs quantum well vertical cavity surface emitting lasers for optical interconnection applications are reported. Fundamental mode continuous-wave lasing at wavelengths beyond 1300 nm is demonstrated at room temperature. The metal-organic vapour-phase epitaxy grown structure was processed as top p-type distribute Bragg reflector oxide-confined devices.

  • Reliability and degradation mechanism of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs for next generation mobile communication systems
  • 2009
  • In: Microelectronics and Reliability. - : Elsevier BV. - 0026-2714. ; 49:5, s. 474-477
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Excellent reliability performance of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs on SiC substrates for next generation mobile communication systems has been demonstrated using DC and RF stress tests on 8 x 60 mu m wide and 0.5 mu m long AlGaN/GaN HEMTs at a drain voltage of V-d = 50 V. Drain current recovery measurements after stress indicate that the degradation is partly caused by slow traps generated in the SiN passivation or in the HEMT epitaxial layers. The traps in the SiN passivation layer were characterized using high and low frequency capacitance-voltage (CV) measurements of MIS test structures on thick lightly doped GaN layers. • The Mt Logan Holocene-late Wisconsinan isotope record : Tropical Pacific-Yukon connections
  • 2008
  • In: Holocene. - : SAGE Publications. ; 18:5, s. 667-677
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The ice core recovered from Prospector Russell Col on Mt Logan (5.4 km a.s.l.), in the Yukon spans over 20 000 years. This unique record offers a Pacific view of the stable isotope and chemical record from the Lateglacial to the present. The timescale is based on seasonal counted years, the largest known volcanic acid signatures and the major shift in stable isotopes and chemistry at the end of the Younger Dryas. There are large and sustained changes in the stable isotopic record that are anti-correlated with marine and continental chemistry series. The oxygen-18 in this area is not a proxy for palaeotemperature but rather for source region. The last major isotope shift in AD 1840 in δ(18O) and chemistry is compared with the Quinn's ENSO record. During periods of more frequent La Niña (stronger tropical easterlies) there is more zonal flow of water vapour transport to the Pacific Northwest, δ(18O) values are larger and the deuterium excess d smaller. These periods coincide with periods of lower accumulation/precipitation in southern Yukon. The Holocene δ(18O) record indicates many large shifts between the meridional (strong El Niño) and zonal (La Niña). Comparison of the Logan isotopic record and the moisture/temperature-sensitive time series of peat bog inception dates for the Northwest shows a strong correlation (0.36) that points to high accumulation rates coincident with low δ(18O) and enhanced meridional flow. Major changes in the core at 4200 BP and 7000—8000 BP point to enhanced meridional flow, which coincide with big changes in the Pacific palaeorecords of the balance between El Niño and La Niña. 4200 BP seems to have inaugurated the `modern' ENSO world.

  • Experimental characteristics and analysis of transverse modes in 1.3 μm strained InGaAs quantum well VCSELs
  • 2006
  • In: Proc SPIE Int Soc Opt Eng. - : SPIE. - 0819462411 - 9780819462411
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the context of optical interconnection applications, we report on results obtained on strained InGaAs quantum well Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). Our devices are top p-type DBR oxide-confined VCSEL, grown by metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy (MOVPE). These lasers exhibit low threshold currents and deliver up to 1.77 mW in continuous wave operation at room temperature. Fundamental mode continuous-wave lasing at wavelengths beyond 1300 nm at room temperature is reached for a 4 μm oxide diameter VCSEL. The particular design of the active layer based on a large detuning between the gain maximum and the cavity resonance gives our devices a very specific thermal and modal behaviour. Therefore, we study the spectral and spatial distributions of the transverse modes by near field scanning optical microscopy using a micropolymer tip at the end of an optical fibre.

  • Disappearance of the N=14 shell gap in the carbon isotopic chain
  • 2008
  • In: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 78:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The structure of C-17-20(6) nuclei was investigated by means of the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique using fragmentation reactions of radioactive beams. Based on particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, level schemes are constructed for the neutron-rich C17-20 nuclei. The systematics of the first excited 2(+) states in the carbon isotopes is extended for the first time to A = 20 showing that in contrast to the case of the oxygen isotopes, the N = 14 subshell closure disappears. Experimental results are compared with shell-model calculations. Agreement between them is found only if a reduced neutron-neutron effective interaction is used. Implications of this reduced interaction in some properties of weakly bound neutron-rich Carbon are discussed.
