    • We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and. high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median z similar to 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between z similar to 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs. and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the. Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

  • From efficacy in trials to effectiveness in clinical practice : The Swedish Stroke Prevention Study

    • Blood pressure treatment has shown great efficacy in reducing cardiovascular events in randomized controlled trials. If this is effective in reducing cardiovascular disease in the general population, is less studied. Between 2001 and 2009 we performed an intervention to improve blood pressure control in the county of Vasterbotten, using Sodermanland County as a control. The intervention was directed towards primary care physicians and included lectures on blood pressure treatment, a computerized decision support system with treatment recommendations, and yearly feed back on hypertension control. Each county had approximately 255000 inhabitants. Differences in age and incidence of cardiovascular disease were small. During follow-up, more than 400000 patients had their blood pressure recorded. The mean number of measurements was eight per patient, yielding a total of 3.4 million blood pressure recordings. The effect of the intervention will be estimated combining the blood pressure data collected from the electronic medical records, with data on stroke, myocardial infarction and mortality from Swedish health registers. Additional variables, from health registers and Statistics Sweden, will be collected to address for confounders. The blood pressure data collected within this study will be an important asset for future epidemiological studies within the field of hypertension.

    • The article explores Freud’s writing on homosexuality, from his early hypotheses, expressed in his letters to Fleiss to his last observations in The Outline of Psychoanalysis, published in 1940 after his death. We trace the continuities as well as changes in his thinking, and have organized the paper conceptually, under the headings: 1) Bisexuality 2) Narcissism and Object choice, 3) On Normality and Pathology, and 4) The Quantitative factor and Aggression. We show that Freud was the first to confirm the existence of homosexualities, that he offers no black and white solution to the question of normality and pathology, although he contributes to the understanding of the vehemence that surrounds the subject, and that, in the considerable body of work, he has offered a rich and varied foundation for further thinking on the subject.

    • A CMOS compatible direct write laser lithography technique has been developed for cantilever fabrication on pre-fabricated standard CMOS. We have developed cantilever based sensors for mass measurements in vacuum and air. The cantilever is actuated into lateral vibration by electrostatic excitation and the resonant frequency is detected by capacitive readout. The device is integrated on standard CMOS circuitry. In the work a new direct write laser lithography (DWL) technique is introduced. This laser lithography technique is based on direct laser writing on substrates coated with a resist bi-layer consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on lift-off resist (LOR). Laser writing evaporates the PMMA, exposing the LOR. A resist solvent is used to transfer the pattern down to the substrate. Metal lift-off followed by reactive ion etching is used for patterning the structural poly-Si layer in the CMOS. The developed laser lithography technique is compatible with resist exposure techniques such as electron beam lithography. We demonstrate the fabrication of sub-micrometre wide suspended cantilevers as well as metal lift-off with feature line widths down to approximately 500 nm.

    • Extended summaryWe live in a world that is rapidly changing and what we believe to be true today may very well be overturned tomorrow. Many of the issues raised in social studies education are characterized by changeability and complexity, such as conflicts, sustainable development, issues of justice, as well as political, social and economic processes. One common way of helping students to grasp the complex relations and the changeability involved in social studies related issues is to use models. Examples of models often used in social studies teaching are models illustrating sustainable development or political processes, as well as illustrations of the socio-economic cycle and diagrams visualizing relations between different factors in society. However, teacher experience as well as earlier research indicate that students often find it difficult to understand and interpret models (see for instance Roberts & Brugar, 2017; Jägerskog, 2020; Sundler, Dudas & Anderhag, 2017). In addition, there is a risk that these seemingly fixed models do not offer an understanding of the changeability in societal issues. The aim of this presentation is to discuss how phenomenography and variation theory (with a focus on critical aspects) can increase our understanding of how models used in social studies teaching can help students understand the complexity and changeability in societal issues. The aim is also to discuss the possible transferability of critical aspects between different kinds models used in social studies teaching. The presentation is based on a project aiming at identifying students’ understanding of two kinds of models (flowcharts and plot diagrams) often used in social studies teaching, and what students need to discern in order to develop the ability reason in a qualified way about the content illustrated. The material analysed consists of 46 recorded and transcribed small group discussions where students in year 6 and 8 in compulsory school and year 1 in upper secondary school discuss a question that concerns either a flowchart illustrating the democracy system in Sweden, a flowchart of the socio-economic cycle, a plot diagram illustrating the relationship between different countries’ GDP and level of CO2 emissions, or a plot diagram illustrating the relationship between birthrate per woman in different countries and the amount of years girls in these countries attend to school. The transcribed material was analysed using phenomenographic methods and critical aspects were identified for the four different models investigated (Marton, 2015). Results show that the critical aspects identified in part can be understood as model and content specific, but in part as model generic. This means that although two flowcharts (or two plot diagrams) illustrate different content, the aspects identified as necessary for students to discern in order to reason about the content illustrated in a qualified way, are very similar. Although similarities are especially clear between models of the same kind (i.e between two different plot diagrams or two different flowcharts), similarities can also be found between the different kinds of models (i.e between flowcharts and diagrams).This raises questions concerning the transferability of critical aspects between different kinds of models and if aspects that reoccur in relation to different models, such as aspects of changeability and complexity, could be understood as especially characteristic for social studies models. ReferencesJägerskog, A., (2020).
