  • Mass composition of the escaping plasma at Mars
  • 2006
  • In: Icarus. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-1035 .- 1090-2643. ; 182:2, s. 320-328
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Data from the Ion Mass Analyzer (IMA) sensor of the ASPERA-3 instrument suite on Mars Express have been analyzed to determine the mass composition of the escaping ion species at Mars. We have examined 77 different ion-beam events and we present the results in terms of flux ratios between the following ion species: CO2+/O+ and O-2(+)/O+. The following ratios averaged over all events and energies were identified: CO2+/O+ = 0.2 and O-2(+)/O+ = 0.9. The values measured are significantly higher, by a factor of 10 for O-2(+)/O+, than a contemporary modeled ratio for the maximum fluxes which the martian ionosphere can supply. The most abundant ion species was found to be O+, followed by O-2(+) and CO2+. We estimate the loss of CO2+ to be 4.0 x 10(24) s(-1) (0.29 kg s(-1)) by using the previous measurements of Phobos-2 in our calculations. The dependence of the ion ratios in relation to their energy ranges we studied, 0.3-3.0 keV, indicated that no clear correlation was found.

  • Investigation of lifetimes in quadrupole bands of Gd-142
  • 2008
  • In: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 35:2, s. 135-158
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For a level scheme investigation of Gd-142 an experiment with the gamma -spectrometer EUROBALLIII has been carried out and lifetimes have been measured with EUROBALL IV using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The high-spin states have been populated in these experiments by means of the(99)Ru(Ti-48, 2p3n) reaction at a beam energy of 240MeV and the Sn-114(S-32, 2p2n) reaction at 160MeV, respectively. Reduced E2 transition probabilities B(E2) were determined for 15 members of four quadrupole bands. For the interpretation of the positive-parity even-spin quadrupole bands, calculations in the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky as well as interacting boson models have been performed. From the former calculations it was concluded that the high-spin states of the (+ , 0)(1) band in Gd-142 represent a triaxial nucleus rotating around the longest principal axis.

  • Candidate gene association study for noise-induced hearing loss in two independent noise-exposed populations
  • 2009
  • In: Annals of Human Genetics. - : Wiley. - 0003-4800 .- 1469-1809. ; 73:2, s. 215-224
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Millions of people are daily exposed to high levels of noise. Consequently, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most important occupational health hazards worldwide. In this study, we performed an association study for NIHL based on a candidate gene approach. 644 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in 53 candidate genes were analyzed in two independent NIHL sample sets, a Swedish set and part of a Polish set. Eight SNPs with promising results were selected and analysed in the remaining part of the Polish samples. One SNP in PCDH15 (rs7095441), resulted in significant associations in both sample sets while two SNPs in MYH14 (rs667907 and rs588035), resulted in significant associations in the Polish sample set and significant interactions with noise exposure level in the Swedish sample set. Calculation of odds ratios revealed a significant association of rs588035 with NIHL in the Swedish high noise exposure level group. Our studies suggest that PCDH15 and MYH14 may be NIHL susceptibility genes, but further replication in independent sample sets is mandatory.

  • Temporal trends of HLA genotype frequencies of type 1 diabetes patients in Sweden from 1986 to 2005 suggest altered risk
  • 2008
  • In: Acta Diabetologica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0940-5429 .- 1432-5233. ; 45:4, s. 231-5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes in 1-18-year-old patients with type 1 diabetes newly diagnosed in 1986-1987 (n = 430), 1996-2000 (n = 342) and in 2003-2005 (n = 171). We tested the hypothesis that the HLA DQ genotype distribution changes over time. Swedish type 1 diabetes patients and controls were typed for HLA using polymerase chain reaction amplification and allele specific probes for DQ A1* and B1* alleles. The most common type 1 diabetes HLA DQA1*-B1*genotype 0501-0201/0301-0302 was 36% (153/430) in 1986-1987 and 37% (127/342) in 1996-2000, but decreased to 19% (33/171) in 2003-2005 (P \ 0.0001). The 0501-0201/0501-0201 genotype increased from 1% in 1986-1987 to 7% in 1996-2000 (P = 0.0047) and to 5% in 2003-2005 (P > 0.05). This study in 1-18-year-old Swedish type 1 diabetes patients supports the notion that there is a temporal change in HLA risk.

  • Flexure analysis of unsymmetric orthotropic beams with an interlayer
  • 2009
  • In: International Journal of Solids and Structures. - : Elsevier. - 0020-7683 .- 1879-2146. ; 46:10, s. 2093-2110
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents a layer-wise stress and deformation analysis of a three-layer beam configuration consisting of two dissimilar orthotropic adherends of different thicknesses that are joined together by a deformable interlayer of finite thickness. Analytical solutions for the case of three-point flexure loading are presented for both compressible and incompressible interlayers. Parametric analysis reveals the influences of asymmetry of moduli and adherend thicknesses, interlayer thickness, and overhang of the beams on the beam compliance. Analytical predictions of beam compliance show very good agreement with finite element results. Experimental measurements of compliance of various unsymmetric beams consisting of aluminum adherends separated by a rubber interlayer were performed in order to validate the analysis. Excellent agreement between measured and predicted compliance values was observed.

  • Flexure of beams with an interlayer : symmetric beams with orthotropic adherends
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures. - : Mathematical Sciences Publishers. - 1559-3959 .- 2157-5428. ; 3:1, s. 45-62
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Analysis of the three-point flexure loading of a symmetric beam configurationconsisting of two identical adherends joined by a flexible layer is presented. Aclosed-form solution is presented in the form of a layer-wise approach, andshows excellent agreement with finite element results. Particular emphasis isgiven to the global beam compliance. The results show that a thin, sheardeformable layer may effectively decouple the responses of the two beams.Furthermore, in contrast to ordinary beams, the presence of an overhangreduces the beam compliance. These effects are quantified and discussed.Experiments on aluminum adherends joined by a rubber layer were conductedover a range of overhang lengths in a three-point flexure fixture, and verygood agreement between measured and predicted beam compliance was noted.

  • GaAs/AlGaAs buried-heterostructure vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with semi-insulating GalnP : Fe regrowth
  • 2000
  • In: Electronics Letters. - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 36:18, s. 1542-1544
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The authors report the first results of a GaAs/AlGaAs buried-heterostructure vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with semi-insulating Ga0.51In0.49P:Fe (SI-GaInP:Fe) as the burying layer. Regrowth of SI-GaInP:Fe around 15 mu m diameter and 8 mu m tall VCSEL mesas was carried out by hydride vapour phase epitaxy (HVPE). Under room temperature continuous wave (CW) operation. the device exhibited a threshold current of 3.5mA, a differential quantum efficency of 33% and a light output power of 4.2mW. CW operation at temperatures up to 97 degrees C is also demonstrated.
