  • On the origin of suppression of free exciton no-phonon emission in ZnO tetrapods
  • 2010
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 96:3, s. 033108-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Temperature dependent photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopies are employed to investigate free exciton (FX) emissions in ZnO tetrapods. The intensity of the no-phonon line is found to be largely suppressed as compared with longitudinal optical phonon assisted transitions, in sharp contrast to bulk ZnO. From spatially resolved CL studies, this suppression is shown to strongly depend on structural morphology of the ZnO tetrapods and becomes most significant within areas with faceted surfaces. A model based on reabsorption due to multiple internal reflections in the vicinity of the FX resonance is suggested to account for the observed effect.

  • Long lifetime of free excitons in ZnO tetrapod structures
  • 2010
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 96:8, s. 083104-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) is employed to characterize optical quality of ZnO tetrapods. PL decay of free excitons (FE) is concluded to contain two components with time constants of 1 and 14 ns at room temperature. The fast PL decay is attributed to nonradiative recombination whereas the slow decay is suggested to mainly represent FE radiative lifetime, based on correlation between thermally induced increases in the PL linewidth and FE lifetimes. The results underline superior optical quality of the tetrapods as the decay time of the slow PL component is comparable to the longest lifetimes reported to date for ZnO.

  • Design rules for minimizing voltage losses in high-efficiency organic solar cells
  • 2018
  • In: Nature Materials. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 1476-1122 .- 1476-4660. ; 17:8, s. 703-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The open-circuit voltage of organic solar cells is usually lower than the values achieved in inorganic or perovskite photovoltaic devices with comparable bandgaps. Energy losses during charge separation at the donor-acceptor interface and non-radiative recombination are among the main causes of such voltage losses. Here we combine spectroscopic and quantum-chemistry approaches to identify key rules for minimizing voltage losses: (1) a low energy offset between donor and acceptor molecular states and (2) high photoluminescence yield of the low-gap material in the blend. Following these rules, we present a range of existing and new donor-acceptor systems that combine efficient photocurrent generation with electroluminescence yield up to 0.03%, leading to non-radiative voltage losses as small as 0.21 V. This study provides a rationale to explain and further improve the performance of recently demonstrated high-open-circuit-voltage organic solar cells.

  • Effect of exciton transfer on recombination dynamics in vertically nonuniform GaAsSb epilayers
  • 2019
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 114:25
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL), photoreflectance (PR), and temperature dependent time-resolved PL spectroscopies are employed to investigate optical emission processes and exciton dynamics in graded GaAsSb epilayers. The nonuniformity in the Sb composition along the growth direction is disclosed by low-temperature PL and PR measurements. Furthermore, significant differences in PL dynamics are found at low temperatures for the PL emissions originating from spatial regions with the low and high Sb compositions, with a fast decay and a slow rise at the early stage of the PL transient, respectively. This finding is attributed to exciton transfer from the low Sb region to the high Sb region. The obtained results are important for a general understanding of optical transitions and exciton/carrier dynamics in material systems with a graded alloy composition.

  • Vibronic coherence contributes to photocurrent generation in organic semiconductor heterojunction diodes
  • 2020
  • In: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Charge separation dynamics after the absorption of a photon is a fundamental process relevant both for photosynthetic reaction centers and artificial solar conversion devices. It has been proposed that quantum coherence plays a role in the formation of charge carriers in organic photovoltaics, but experimental proofs have been lacking. Here we report experimental evidence of coherence in the charge separation process in organic donor/acceptor heterojunctions, in the form of low frequency oscillatory signature in the kinetics of the transient absorption and nonlinear two-dimensional photocurrent spectroscopy. The coherence plays a decisive role in the initial 200 femtoseconds as we observe distinct experimental signatures of coherent photocurrent generation. This coherent process breaks the energy barrier limitation for charge formation, thus competing with excitation energy transfer. The physics may inspire the design of new photovoltaic materials with high device performance, which explore the quantum effects in the next-generation optoelectronic applications.

  • On the origin of spin loss in GaMnN/InGaN Light-Emitting Diodes
  • 2004
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 84, s. 2599-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    •  Spin polarization of GaMnN/InGaN light-emitting diodes grown by molecular beam epitaxy is analyzed. In spite of the ferromagnetic behavior of the GaMnN spin injector, the diodes are shown to exhibit very low efficiency of spin injection. Based on resonant optical orientation spectroscopy, the spin loss in the structures is shown to be largely due to fast spin relaxation within the InGaN spin detector, which itself destroys any spin polarization generated by optical spin orientation or electrical spin injection.
