  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One of the more enduring tropes of Euro-American expansionism is the racial uniformity of its promoters, its beneficiaries, and its victims. Aside from the self-indulgent claims of racial superiority and the corresponding missionary spirit of many European-origin imperial conquerors, recent scholarship reveals a much more diverse cadre of imperialist benefactors. Now cutting across the “white man’s” self-imposed divide that circulated by way of popular culture and scholarship, a new complexity to the power dynamics at play includes reassessing the profile of the frontiersmen, cowboys, settlers, pioneers, miners, and then state employees who brought modern capitalism’s empire to the far corners of the world.Properly telling the story of capitalist imperialism’s ascendancy still requires the register of deviance, deceit, greed, and criminal duplicity, but one that emanates from multiple layers of the society 19th century global capitalism created. Regularly acknowledged in the recent scholarship on colonialism, the conquests of other people’s lands did not come without the human components whose skills extended beyond simple murder, financial mendacity, and European origins. Thanks to a recent surge in rethinking the sociology of this nasty enterprise, the panoply of human agents contributing to the expansion of empire included men and women of very different origins, be it geographic, class, race, or religion. Indeed, the very fact such a diversity of humanity came to serve the brutal role of dislodging other people from their homelands demands new ways of writing modern history. In the following we explore possible ways of discovering and then making sense of those whose non-European, and thus non-White, backgrounds did not stop them from becoming an agent who used empire to secure greater social mobility. One particularly conspicuous beneficiary of European imperialism was the migrant sent to the colonial theatre to service capitalism’s comprehensive subjugation of others’ natural resources. From humble origins in the Middle East, East Asia, or throughout the Mediterranean were migrants so often celebrated in the media at the time for their overwhelming impact on the process of “expanding civilization” (Blumi 2013). The regular stories in newspapers and the expanding library of novels depicting this settlement of migrants regularly sold the myth of capitalism and “progress.” This discourse infiltrated the world, selling the promise of rewards of a “new life” for those willing to “work.” In this context, otherwise marginal people, often themselves victims of the same expansive capitalist system, became heroes of liberal-era capitalism by the often-coerced use of their “free” labor.

  • Binding site differences revealed by crystal structures of Plasmodium falciparum and bovine acyl-CoA binding protein
  • 2001
  • In: JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY. - 0022-2836. ; 309:1, s. 181-192
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Acyl-CoA binding protein (ACBP) maintains a pool of fatty acyl-CoA molecules in the cell and plays a role in fatty acid metabolism. The biochemical properties of Plasmodium falciparum ACBP are described together with the 2.0 A resolution crystal structures of a P. falciparum ACBP-acyl-CoA complex and of bovine ACBP in two crystal forms. Overall, the bovine ACBP crystal structures are similar to the NMR structures published previously; however, the bovine and parasite ACBP structures are less similar. The parasite ACBP is shown to have a different ligand-binding pocket, leading to an acyl-CoA binding specificity different from that of bovine ACBP. Several non-conservative differences in residues that interact with the ligand were identified between the mammalian and parasite ACBPs. These, together with measured binding-specificity differences, suggest that there is a potential for the design of molecules that might selectively block the acyl-CoA binding site.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Long-lasting neuronal activity in rat dorsal horn evoked by impulses in cutaneous C fibres during noxious mechanical stimulation
  • 1988
  • In: Brain Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-6240 .- 0006-8993. ; 439:1-2, s. 56-63
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The responses of 44 nociceptive neurones in the lumbar dorsal horn evoked by controlled mechanical stimulation of the skin, with or without conduction block in myelinated afferent fibres, were studied in the halothane-anaesthetized rat, in order to evaluate the effects of impulses in cutaneous nociceptive C fibres on dorsal horn neurones. Continuous non-noxious pinch of the skin evoked a short-latency discharge (mean latency 15 ms) in all the 13 class 2 neurones (i.e. neurones responding to both non-noxious and noxious stimulation of the skin) tested. The short-latency discharge was followed by weak prolonged activity in 6 neurones. Following noxious pinch of the skin a prominent late discharge (peak latency 150 ms-2 s) was evoked, which in all but two class 2 neurones outlasted the stimulation period (5-10 s). The discharge evoked by noxious pinch in class 3 neurones (i.e. neurones responding to noxious stimulation only) did not usually outlast the stimulation period. In all but two nociceptive neurones tested (n = 26) the late activity evoked by noxious pinch remained, albeit at a lower frequency in some neurones, during a conduction block in A fibres2.3. Hence this late discharge is probably mainly generated by impulses in nociceptive C fibres. It is concluded that nociceptive C fibres have an important role in sustaining long-lasting activation of class 2 neurones during noxious stimulation of the skin and that long-lasting discharges in these neurones indicates tissue damage to their receptive fields.

  • Functional evaluation of microvascular free flaps with positron emission tomography
  • 2006
  • In: Journal of Plastic, reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1748-6815. ; 59:2, s. 158-165
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess blood flow (BF) of microvascular free flaps studied with positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) undergoing major radical surgery 3-4 weeks after high-dose radiotherapy. METHODS: Five patients underwent resection of the HNSCC of the oral cavity followed by microvascular reconstruction with a radial forearm flap. Regional BF in oral and neck tissues was measured with PET using radiolabelled water ([(15)O]H(2)O) twice (1-2 and 12-14 days, respectively) following radical surgery. RESULTS: In the first postoperative PET study, the median BF in the cutaneous flap area was 5.1mL/100g/min, and in the muscle contra-lateral to the recipient site 19.9mL/100g/min. A low flap-to-muscle BF ratio appeared to correlate with circulatory incongruity, and thus with poorer flap success. The follow-up study on the second postoperative week supported the results of the primary PET scan. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study suggests that PET using [(15)O]H(2)O is a feasible method to quantitatively evaluate BF of the whole free flap in patients operated on for oral HNSCC.
