  • Decay Spectroscopy of Element 115 Daughters: 280Rg -> 276Mt and 276Mt -> 272Bh

    • Forty-six decay chains, assigned to the decay of 288-115, were produced using the 243Am(48Ca,3n)288-115 reaction at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-in. cyclotron. The resulting series of α decays were studied using α-photon and α-x-ray spectroscopies. Multiple α-photon coincidences were observed in the element 115 decay chain members, particularly in the third- and fourth-generation decays (presumed to be 280Rg and 276Mt, respectively). Upon combining these data with those from 22 288-115 decay chains observed in a similar experiment, updated level schemes in 276Mt and 272Bh (populated by the α decay of 280Rg and 276Mt, respectively) are proposed. Photons were observed in the energy range expected for K x rays coincident with the α decay of both 280Rg and 276Mt. However, Compton scattering of higher-energy γ rays and discrete transitions are present in the K x-ray region preventing a definitive Z identification to be made based on observation of characteristic K x-ray energies.

    • Recent crises and disasters, both natural and man-made have led to the conclusion that there is a need for a resilient approach to preparing for and dealing with such events is needed. In this context, the DARWIN project aims to improve response to expected and unexpected crises affecting critical infrastructures and social structures by developing management guidelines on resilience concepts and innovative training modules for crisis management. The guidelines will cover essential resilience abilities of stakeholders to anticipate, monitor, respond, adapt, learn and evolve, to ensure efficient operation in face of crises. This paper uses a selection of resilience concepts to illustrate how resilience management guidelines can be used to understand and improve crises management. The application of the concepts to this specific case is an experiment to guide further work. This experiment shows that resilience guidelines should enable discovery on how multiple actors operate in a flexible manner and adapt in rapidly changing environment. Further work, needs to specify a set of guidelines co-developed and tested with end-users.

    • High-dose melphalan and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDM/ASCT) is widely used in immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis, but the benefit is debated mainly because of the high treatment-related mortality (24% in a randomised study comparing HDM/ASCT with oral melphalan/dexamethasone). We report here on the long-term outcome of all patients treated with HDM/ASCT for AL amyloidosis in Sweden between 1994 and 2009. Seventy-two patients were treated at eight Swedish centres. Median follow-up was 67.5 months. At least partial response (organ or haematological) was seen in 64% of the patients. Median overall survival was 98 months or 8.2 years, with 5-year survival 63.9% and 10-year survival 43.4%. In patients with cardiac involvement or multiple organ involvement, survival was significantly shorter, median overall survival 49 and 56 months, respectively. All mortality within 100 days from ASCT was 12.5% for all patients and 17.2% in the patients with cardiac involvement. For patients treated in the earlier time period (1994-2001), 100-day mortality was 23.8% compared with 7.8% in the later period (2002-2009). In conclusion, long survival times can be achieved in patients with AL amyloidosis treated with HDM/ASCT, also in smaller centres. Early mortality is high, but with a decreasing trend over time.

    • An optical vortex coronagraph has been implemented within the NIRC2 camera on the Keck II telescope and used to carry out on-sky tests and observations. The development of this new L′-band observational mode is described, and an initial demonstration of the new capability is presented: a resolved image of the low-mass companion to HIP 79124, which had previously been detected by means of interferometry. With HIP 79124 B at a projected separation of 186.5 mas, both the small inner working angle of the vortex coronagraph and the related imaging improvements were crucial in imaging this close companion directly. Due to higher Strehl ratios and more relaxed contrasts in L′ band versus H band, this new coronagraphic capability will enable high-contrast, small-angle observations of nearby young exoplanets and disks on a par with those of shorter-wavelength extreme adaptive optics coronagraphs.

    • AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) fabricated on a heterostructure grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using an alternative method of carbon (C) doping the buffer are characterized. C-doping is achieved by using propane as precursor, as compared to tuning the growth process parameters to control C-incorporation from the gallium precursor. This approach allows for optimization of the GaN growth conditions without compromising material quality to achieve semi-insulating properties. The HEMTs are evaluated in terms of isolation and dispersion. Good isolation with OFF-state currents of 2 x 10(-6)A/mu m, breakdown fields of 70V/mu m, and low drain induced barrier lowering of 0.13mV/V are found. Dispersive effects are examined using pulsed current-voltage measurements. Current collapse and knee walkout effects limit the maximum output power to 1.3W/mm. With further optimization of the C-doping profile and GaN material quality this method should offer a versatile approach to decrease dispersive effects in GaN HEMTs.     • The global demand for decreased emission from engines and increased efficiency drives manufactures to develop more advanced fuel injection systems. Today's compression-ignited engines use common rail systems with high injection pressures and fuel injector nozzles with small orifice diameters. These systems are highly sensitive to small changes in orifice diameters since these could lead to deteriorations in spray characteristics, thus reducing engine performance and increasing emissions. Phenomena that could create problems include nozzle fouling caused by metal carboxylates or biofuels. The problems increase with extended use of biofuels. This paper reports on an experimental study of nozzle hole fouling performed on a single-cylinder engine. The aim was to identify if the solubility of the fuel has an effect on deposit build-up and, thus, the reduction in fuelling with associated torque loss, and if there is a probability of regenerating the contaminated injectors. Additionally, the influence of the nozzle geometry was tested by using injectors of various designs. In the experiments, high-load engine operation was used to create the effect of fouling in the presence of zinc-neodecanoate. Solubility properties of the fuel were tested by using high- A nd low-aromatic-content diesel fuels. To gain insight into the morphology and chemical characteristics of the deposits, the nozzles were opened and examined with scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX). The results showed higher power loss in low-aromatic-content fuels. The experiments also showed regained engine power within an hour using uncontaminated fuel in a fouled nozzle. A three steps process is proposed as the mechanism for deposit build-up and removal in injector nozzles. It is suggested that fouling of the injector is equilibrium between the different steps of the mechanisms.

    • Epidemiology and outcome of myeloma are mainly reported from large university centers and collaborative groups, and do not represent 'real-world' patients. The Swedish Myeloma Registry is a prospective population-based registry documenting characteristics, treatment and outcome in newly diagnosed myeloma, including asymptomatic and localized forms, with the purpose of improving disease management and outcome. This report presents information on patients diagnosed between 2008 and 2015, including data on first-line treatment in patients diagnosed up to 2014, with a follow up until December 2016. We present age-adjusted incidence, patients' characteristics at baseline, treatment, response, and survival. Baseline data were available with a 97% coverage in 4904 patients (median age 71 years, males 70 years, females 73 years; 72% were 65 years or older), and at 1-year follow up in 3558 patients with symptomatic disease (92% of patients initially reported). The age-adjusted incidence was 6.8 myeloma cases per 100,000 inhabi-ants per year. Among initially symptomatic patients (n= 3988), 77% had osteolytic lesions or compression fractures, 49% had anemia, 18% impaired kidney function, and 13% hypercalcemia. High-dose therapy with autologous stem cell transplantation was given to 77% of patients aged up to 66 years, and to 22% of patients aged 66-70 years. In the study period, 68% received bortezomib, thalidomide, and/or lenalidomide as part of the first-line treatment, rising from 31% in 2008 to 81% in 2014. In active myeloma, the median relative survival of patients aged 65 years or under was 7.7 years, and 3.4 years in patients aged 66 years and over. Patients diagnosed with myeloma in more recent years were associated with significantly higher rates of complete or very good partial remission (P<0.05), and with a significantly higher survival, with a Hazard Ratio (HR) of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77-0.92; P<0.05). There was a small, but significant survival benefit in patients treated at university hospitals (HR 0.93; 95% CI: 0.87-0.99; P<0.05). We report here on a near complete 'real-world' population of myeloma patients during an 8-year period; a period in which newer drugs were implemented into standard practice. The overall incidence and median age were both higher than in most previous studies, indicating a more complete coverage of older patients. Myeloma survival in Sweden is comparable to other large registry studies, and responses and survival improved during the study period.
