  • Performance Evaluation of Dynamic Monitoring Systems : The Waterfall Chart
  • 2003
  • In: Quality Engineering. - 0898-2112 .- 1532-4222. ; 16:2, s. 183-191
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Computers are increasingly employed to monitor the performance of complex systems. An important issue is how to evaluate the performance of such monitors. In this article we introduce a three-dimensional representation that we call a "waterfall chart" of the probability of an alarm as a function of time and the condition of the system. It combines and shows the conceptual relationship between the cumulative distribution function of the run length and the power function. The value of this tool is illustrated with an application to Page's one-sided Cusum algorithm. However, it can be applied in general for any monitoring system.

  • Magnetism of the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface
  • 2002
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 88:21, s. 217202-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The magnetism of epitaxial ultrathin films of Fe on ZnSe(001) has been investigated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism down to the submonolayer regime. In contrast to other metallic ferromagnet/semiconductor interfaces, no reduction of the Fe magnetic moment was found at the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface. Furthermore, a significant enhancement of the Fe magnetic moment compared to the bulk value was observed for coverages up to one monolayer in agreement with theoretical predictions. We also demonstrate that the magnetic properties of the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface remain stable against thermal annealing up to 300 degrees C, a prerequisite for the future development of efficient spintronics devices.

  • Fluid balance in patients with chronic renal failure assessed with N-terminal proatrial natriuretic peptide, atrial natriuretic peptide and ultrasonography
  • 2001
  • In: Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-6772 .- 1365-201X. ; 171:2, s. 117-122
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The N-terminal proatrial natriuretic peptide (proANP) has become an important parameter for assessing the prognosis of patients with cardiac disease. Its use for evaluating the hydration status in patients with chronic renal failure, however, is still under investigation. The present study comprised 12 haemodialysis (HD) and 17 pre-dialysis patients. In the HD patients, the inferior vena cava diameter during quiet expiration (IVCe) was estimated by ultrasonography and plasma concentrations of N-terminal proANP, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) were measured before and 4 h after termination of HD. In the pre-dialysis patients venous blood samples were taken during rest to measure plasma N-terminal proANP and ANP and serum creatinine. Normal values for N-terminal proANP and ANP were obtained from 18 healthy volunteers. The plasma concentrations of N-terminal proANP and ANP in healthy volunteers were 328 +/- 92 and 11.4.0 +/- 3.1 pM L-1, respectively. In pre-dialysis patients, serum creatinine ranged from 110 to 447 microM L-1 and was significantly correlated to plasma N-terminal proANP (r = 0.60, P < 0.05) but not to ANP. This may indicate that N-terminal proANP is more dependent on renal function for its clearance than ANP, which is probably cleared by extrarenal mechanisms as well. In HD patients, IVCe was significantly correlated to the three hormones before HD, most strongly to N-terminal proANP. After dialysis, IVCe was significantly correlated to ANP and cGMP but was not correlated to N-terminal proANP. This may suggest that proANP takes a longer time than other hormones to reflect changes in intravascular volume. In conclusion, N-terminal proANP is a hormone closely related to degree of renal function. Furthermore, it is a sensitive marker reflecting the interdialytic hydration status in HD patients, as indicated by its high correlation to IVCe, a standard method which is used frequently nowadays to assess the body hydration. However N-terminal proANP could not reflect the acute changes in fluid volume induced by HD, probably because it is slowly metabolized.

  • Sector modeling for the prediction and evaluation of Cretan olive oil
  • 2004
  • In: European Journal of Operational Research. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 152:2, s. 454-464
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Greece is a major international olive oil producer. Olive oil varieties constitute the major crops for Greek farmers growing certain oriental olive oil varieties. Currently, the olive oil sector in Greece is undergoing substantial changes and the response of farmers and consumers to this will be a vital factor in its success. Throughout the application of the common agriculture policy (CAP), mechanisms, such as production aid, subsidies and marketing orders, were employed to support both producers and consumers. A possible reform of CAP aimed at eliminating or reducing production aid or any kind of subsidies could have a considerable effect on producer and consumer marketing behaviour. In this study a formulated mathematical problem for the olive oil sector on the island of Crete based on the welfare concept and the simulation of the olive oil market equilibrium, subject to specified policy interventions and circumstances was adopted. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that future olive oil policies should not impinge on mechanisms that influence olive oil farmers and consumer behaviour but should emphasize the greater cost effectiveness of production and marketing policies

  • Novel disease-causing mutations in the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase gene interpreted by analysis of the three-dimensional protein structure
  • 2002
  • In: Biochemical Journal. - : Portland Press Ltd.. - 0264-6021 .- 1470-8728. ; 364:Pt 1, s. 157-163
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by thymine-uraciluria in homozygous deficient patients. Cancer patients with a partial deficiency of DPD are at risk of developing severe life-threatening toxicities after the administration of 5-fluorouracil. Thus, identification of novel disease-causing mutations is of the utmost importance to allow screening of patients at risk. In eight patients presenting with a complete DPD deficiency, a considerable variation in the clinical presentation was noted. Whereas motor retardation was observed in all patients, no patients presented with convulsive disorders. In this group of patients, nine novel mutations were identified including one deletion of two nucleotides [1039-1042delTG] and eight missense mutations. Analysis of the crystal structure of pig DPD suggested that five out of eight amino acid exchanges present in these patients with a complete DPD deficiency, Pro86Leu, Ser201Arg, Ser492Leu, Asp949Val and His978Arg, interfered directly or indirectly with cofactor binding or electron transport. Furthermore, the mutations Ile560Ser and Tyr211Cys most likely affected the structural integrity of the DPD protein. Only the effect of the Ile370Val and a previously identified Cys29Arg mutation could not be readily explained by analysis of the three-dimensional structure of the DPD enzyme, suggesting that at least the latter might be a common polymorphism. Our data demonstrate for the first time the possible consequences of missense mutations in the DPD gene on the function and stability of the DPD enzyme.
