  • The interplay between corrosion and cracks in reinforced concrete beams with non-uniform reinforcement corrosion
  • 2022
  • In: Materials and Structures/Materiaux et Constructions. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1359-5997. ; 55:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper investigates the interplay between corrosion of reinforcement and corrosion-induced cracking in reinforced concrete structures with non-uniform corrosion distribution based on the experimental results of a concrete beam simultaneously subjected to sustained deflection and accelerated corrosion through impressed current. Unlike previous studies, this work encompasses various refined techniques for the measurement of surface cracks, such as digital image correlation and distributed optical fiber sensors, as well as for the assessment of reinforcement corrosion, namely 3D laser scanning, to explore previously hidden aspects of the relationship between the two parameters. The applied techniques proved very effective in providing an unprecedented level of detail of both the crack development and corrosion distribution. More specifically, the formation and propagation of corrosion-induced cracks were accurately and constantly monitored over time and subsequently compared to the distribution of corrosion. The results revealed that determining the maximum corrosion level or even the location of the section with maximum corrosion based solely on visual inspection of the surface crack width may not be possible. However, the width of corrosion-induced cracks was found to increase linearly with the local corrosion level, implying that crack width monitoring can still be used to estimate the rate of corrosion degradation.

  • Experimental design for shotcrete tunnel lining with distributed optical fibre monitoring
  • 2022
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • As the demand for expanding the transport infrastructure increases, sustainable solutions for ensuring the service life and safety of new and existing structures are crucial. By introducing state-of-the art-monitoring solutions and advanced AI-algorithms, continuous verification and prediction of the structural integrity becomes possible. In this paper, the SensIT 2.0 project at Chalmers University of Technology is described and initial experimental design for applying Distributed Optical Fibers Sensing (DOFS) systems to a Fibre Reinforced Shotcrete (FRS) tunnel lining is presented.

  • Climate-smarter design of Soil-Steel Composite Bridges using Set-Based Design
  • 2022
  • In: Current Perspectives and New Directions in Mechanics, Modelling and Design of Structural Systems. - London : CRC Press. - 9781003348443 ; , s. 2001-2006
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Swedish Transport Administration (STA) strives to reduce the climate impact in their pro-jects. Soil-Steel Composite Bridges (SSC-Bridges) is one of the most commonly used bridge types in Sweden. The design of SSC-Bridges is traditionally done as Point-Based Design where one single design is tested. With a novel design method called Set-Based Design (SBD) we simultaneously assess instead multiple solutions for every single bridge, which gives the possibility to choose the most optimal design that fulfils the design criteria. This paper investigates the potential of adopting an SBD approach in the design of SSC-Bridges with respect to CO2-equivalents emissions and material cost. The results show that there is great potential to reduce the climate and material cost by up to 20%. Considering the large number of SSC-Bridges that are built, this is an efficient way to reduce the climate impact when building these bridges in the future.

  • Klimatförbättrad vattenbyggnadsbetong utan kylbehov
  • 2022
  • In: Bygg och teknik. - Tyresö : Förlags AB Bygg & teknik. - 0281-658X .- 2002-8350. ; 6/2022
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Collaborative Augmented Reality for increased efficiency and interactivity of infrastructure maintenance and inspection
  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Today, inspections of transport infrastructure and maintenance operations rely to a large extent on manual, analogue and fragmented processes which consequently make the current approach time consuming, inefficient and costly. A digital upgrade of the inspection protocols, methods, and workflows, which have not changed for decades, is urgently needed to increase the efficiency of on-site structural condition assessment. Together with industrial partners, Chalmers University is tackling this challenge by utilising the latest advancements in sensing technology together with the recent developments within the field of ICT. As part of the Chalmers research concept “Sensor driven cloud-based strategies for infrastructure management (SensIT)” we aim at developing a collaborative Augmented Reality (AR) tool for infrastructure inspection and maintenance. The tool will include functionalities to retrieve, analyse and visualise infrastructure data, as well as functionalities for on-site guided inspection and annotation, thereby greatly simplifying and optimizing the inspection process. The project will focus on the needs of end-users such as consultancies and the Swedish Transport Administration by actively engaging our partners in the design, evaluation and on-site testing of the AR tool. We believe that the here proposed integration of AR tools within a structural health monitoring framework has the potential to radically change the way inspections are done today. The digitisation of the entire information flow - BIM/GIS data, sensor data, in-situ simulation results, annotation, inspection history - will greatly reduce the time and costs of inspection processes and will guarantee a simplified and transparent workflow that even non-expert operators will be able to use.

  • Performance requirements for Swedish transport infrastructure - A pre-study of challenges and possibilities
  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In recent years, significant worldwide research has been conducted regarding the performance assessment of bridges and the concept of performance indicator has been introduced However, there are still significant discrepancies in how these indicators are obtained and used. Simultaneously, it is desirable to achieve processes and methods that are direct, i.e. that measured values are directly compared with projected values over time. This project concerns methods for verification of technical performance requirements. The feasibility study brought together interdisciplinary researchers, consultants, and entrepreneurs to gather knowledge, anchor the research agenda, and implement performance requirements. The project concludes that there is a need for a “Holistic multi-parameter verification/validation system” that relies on the knowledge gained in structural health monitoring research.

  • Karbonatisering - En förbisedd koldioxidsänka
  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
