  • Influences of income and employment on psychological distress and depression treatment in Japanese adults

    • Objectives: Psychological distress is a health issue of critical importance, especially in people of working age in developed countries, including Japan. This study examined the relationships of income and employment arrangement with psychological distress and treatment of depression in a national sample of Japanese adults. Methods: Data for 10,959 men and 11,655 women 25–59 years of age, obtained from the Comprehensive Survey of the Living Conditions of People on Health and Welfare in 2007, were examined. Health outcomes were psychological distress measured by the Japanese version of the K6, subjective complaints and medical treatment of depression. Explanatory variables included marital status, employment arrangement, and household income. The relationships between health outcomes and explanatory variables were examined using multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: Lower income and unemployment were associated with a higher prevalence of psychological distress and treatment of depression. The association between psychological distress and income showed a threshold: the lowest income quintile had an especially high prevalence, while other quintiles had similar prevalences. The prevalence of depression treatment in those with psychological distress was significantly lower in the highest income quintile than in all the other income groups, and the prevalence was also significantly lower in employed than in unemployed respondents. Conclusions: This study showed clear relationships of lower income and unemployment with psychological distress and depression treatment. It has been suggested that people with higher socioeconomic status and full-time work may be reluctant to consult professionals and receive medical treatment, despite their psychological distress. Comprehensive mental health interventions are required to prevent psychological distress in all socioeconomic strata of the population.

  • Tracing the cold and warm physico-chemical structure of deeply embedded protostars: IRAS 16293−2422 versus VLA 1623−2417 N.

    • Context. Much attention has been placed on the dust distribution in protostellar envelopes, but there are still many unanswered questions regarding the physico-chemical structure of the gas. Aims. Our aim is to start identifying the factors that determine the chemical structure of protostellar regions, by studying and com- paring low-mass embedded systems in key molecular tracers. Methods. The cold and warm chemical structures of two embedded Class 0 systems, IRAS 16293−2422 and VLA 1623−2417 were characterized through interferometric observations. DCO+, N2H+, and N2D+ were used to trace the spatial distribution and physics of the cold regions of the envelope, while c−C3H2 and C2H from models of the chemistry are expected to trace the warm (UV-irradiated) regions. Results. The two sources show a number of striking similarities and differences. DCO+ consistently traces the cold material at the disk-envelope interface, where gas and dust temperatures are lowered due to disk shadowing. N2H+ and N2D+, also tracing cold gas, show low abundances toward VLA 1623−2417, but for IRAS 16293−2422, the distribution of N2D+ is consistent with the same chemical models that reproduce DCO+. The two systems show different spatial distributions c−C3H2 and C2H. For IRAS 16293−2422, c−C3H2 traces the outflow cavity wall, while C2H is found in the envelope material but not the outflow cavity wall. In contrast, toward VLA 1623−2417 both molecules trace the outflow cavity wall. Finally, hot core molecules are abundantly observed toward IRAS 16293−2422 but not toward VLA 1623−2417. Conclusions. We identify temperature as one of the key factors in determining the chemical structure of protostars as seen in gaseous molecules. More luminous protostars, such as IRAS 16293−2422, will have chemical complexity out to larger distances than colder protostars, such as VLA 1623−2417. Additionally, disks in the embedded phase have a crucial role in controlling both the gas and dust temperature of the envelope, and consequently the chemical structure. Key

  • A theoretical study of the 2(1)A(g)

    • The two-photon spectrum of the 2(1)A(g)-->1(1)A(g) transition in trans-stilbene has been calculated at the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) level of theory. Energies were obtained at the complete active space second-order perturbation (CASPT2) level of theory, while the geometries of both the initial and final states were optimized at the CASSCF level. The energy and the geometry optimizations were performed using an active space of 14 electrons in 14 active pi orbitals. The vibrational frequencies of both states and the two-photon transition (TPT) cross-section were calculated with a smaller active space where the two lowest pi orbitals were kept inactive. A newly implemented algorithm, in the quantum chemical package Molcas was used to determine the two-photon transition intensity. This method requires only the linear response of the CASSCF wavefunction. Furthermore, the vibronic structure of this TPT was studied. The Franck-Condon factors were obtained by calculating the overlap between the vibrational states involved, which were determined from the force fields of both the initial and final states, at the CASSCF level of theory. The results are in agreement with experiment.
