  • Prevalence of amyloid-β pathology in distinct variants of primary progressive aphasia

    • OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of amyloid positivity, defined by positron emission tomography (PET)/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and/or neuropathological examination, in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) variants. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis with individual participant data from 1,251 patients diagnosed with PPA (including logopenic [lvPPA, n = 443], nonfluent [nfvPPA, n = 333], semantic [svPPA, n = 401], and mixed/unclassifiable [n = 74] variants of PPA) from 36 centers, with a measure of amyloid-β pathology (CSF [n = 600], PET [n = 366], and/or autopsy [n = 378]) available. The estimated prevalence of amyloid positivity according to PPA variant, age, and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4 status was determined using generalized estimating equation models.     • This is an edition, with commentary, of a series of judicial accounts for the pro­vinces of Jämtland and Härjedalen, dating from 1601 to 1645. Jämtland and Här­jedalen are today parts of Sweden, but belonged to Norway until 1645. During the period in question, Norway was part of the dualistic unitary state of Den­mark-Norway. The present accounts were made by the bailiffs serving in Jämtland and Härje­dalen. They report fines collected by the bailiffs and the misdeeds people were fined for. The bailiffs were subordinate to the feudal lord residing in Trond­heim, who had the right to one sixth of the fines collected. The rest of the fines went, together with the accounts and other revenues and records as well, to the treasury of King Kristian IV in Copenhagen. Today all these records are kept in the national archives of Norway and Sweden. In the introduction, Per Sörlin describes and discusses the contents of the judicial accounts, the criminality they reflect, the social setting, the administra­tion in Jämtland and Härjedalen, along with other subjects. In the main part of the edition all text of the judicial accounts is transcribed. Two lists of so-called ‘fredsköp’ (purchases of peace), i.e. fines for eluding outlawry after the 1611–1613 war against Sweden, are included as appendices. These fines were paid by farmers of Jämtland who were punished by the Danish King for disloyalty during the war. Also included in the edition are an investigation of the feudal lords and bailiffs in charge in Jämtland and Härjedalen 1601–45, indices of place-names and officials, and a word list.

  • Acute Ultraviolet Radiation Perturbs Epithelialization but not the Biomechanical Strength of Full-thickness Cutaneous Wounds.

    • We hypothesized that priming of the skin with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) before being injured would enhance wound healing. Four groups, each comprising 20 immunocompetent hairless mice, were exposed to simulated solar irradiation in escalating UVR doses; 0 SED (standard erythema dose) = control, 1 SED, 3 SED and 5 SED. Twenty-four h after UV irradiation, inflammation was quantified by skin reflectance (erythema) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) tissue levels, and two 6-mm full-thickness excisional wounds and one 3-cm incisional wound were inflicted. Epidermal hyperplasia was assessed by quantitative histology. Five days after wounding, wound coverage by neoepithelium and wound width of the excisional wounds was quantified in hematoxylin-eosin sections, and breaking strength was measured in strips from incisional wounds. Erythema (P < 0.001), MPO levels (P < 0.0005) and epidermal cell layers (P < 0.001) increased dose-dependently by UV exposure of dorsal skin. In the excisional wounds, epithelial coverage decreased (P = 0.024) by increasing the UVR dose while there was no significant difference (P = 0.765) in wound MPO levels. Neither wound width (P = 0.850) nor breaking strength (P = 0.320) differed among the groups. Solar-simulated UVR 24 h before wounding impaired epithelialization but was not detrimental for surgical wound healing. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

  • The Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study : objectives and design

    • Cardiopulmonary diseases are major causes of death worldwide, but currently recommended strategies for diagnosis and prevention may be outdated because of recent changes in risk factor patterns. The Swedish CArdioPulmonarybioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, advances in large-scale 'omics' and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30 000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. The information obtained will be used to improve risk prediction of cardiopulmonary diseases and optimize the ability to study disease mechanisms. A comprehensive pilot study in 1111 individuals, which was completed in 2012, demonstrated the feasibility and financial and ethical consequences of SCAPIS. Recruitment to the national, multicentre study has recently started.

    • Background: Progress in cancer biomarker discovery is dependent on access to high-quality biological materials and high-resolution clinical data from the same cases. To overcome current limitations, a systematic prospective longitudinal sampling of multidisciplinary clinical data, blood and tissue from cancer patients was therefore initiated in 2010 by Uppsala and Umeå Universities and involving their corresponding University Hospitals, which are referral centers for one third of the Swedish population.Material and Methods: Patients with cancer of selected types who are treated at one of the participating hospitals are eligible for inclusion. The healthcare-integrated sampling scheme encompasses clinical data, questionnaires, blood, fresh frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens, diagnostic slides and radiology bioimaging data.Results: In this ongoing effort, 12,265 patients with brain tumors, breast cancers, colorectal cancers, gynecological cancers, hematological malignancies, lung cancers, neuroendocrine tumors or prostate cancers have been included until the end of 2016. From the 6914 patients included during the first five years, 98% were sampled for blood at diagnosis, 83% had paraffin-embedded and 58% had fresh frozen tissues collected. For Uppsala County, 55% of all cancer patients were included in the cohort.Conclusions: Close collaboration between participating hospitals and universities enabled prospective, longitudinal biobanking of blood and tissues and collection of multidisciplinary clinical data from cancer patients in the U-CAN cohort. Here, we summarize the first five years of operations, present U-CAN as a highly valuable cohort that will contribute to enhanced cancer research and describe the procedures to access samples and data.

    • 90 species of Euplectrus are treated: 55 newly described, all from Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG),and 35 previously described species, of which 20 occur in ACG. Three of the previously described species(E. brasiliensis Ashmead, E. hircinus (Say), E. ronnai (Brèthes)) have unknown status, owing to missing or severely damaged type material. The new species, all authored by C. Lectotypes are designated for eight species: Euplectrus catocalae Howard (♂), E. junctus Gahan (♀), E. leucotrophis Howard (♂), E. marginatus Ashmead (♀), E. pachyscaphus Girault (♀), E. platyhypenae Howard (♂), E. semimarginatus Girault (♀), Heteroscapus ronnai Brèthes (♂). One synonym is established: Euplectrus walteri Schauff is a junior synonym of E. testaceipes (Cameron). Brief image notes and host records are provided on the natural history of the wasps as well as the details of their morphology. Hosts are known for 74 Euplectrus species.

    • The European species of Diglyphus Walker are reviewed. Fifteen species are included. One of these, D. clematidis sp. n., is described as new, and one, D. anadolucus Doganlar, is recorded as new to Europe. Several of the species have their geographical distribution increased as many new country records are introduced. New host records and compilation of host records from the literature are presented in tables. To facilitate the identification of the species a key and numerous illustrations are included. The identity of one of the species described from Europe, D. phytomyzae Ruschka, is unclear. It has not been possible to locate the type material of this species and the original description is not detailed enough to make an unambiguous interpretation possible. Two species, D. scapus Yefremova from Iran and D. sensilis Yefremova from Turkey, are discussed as they occur in the vicinity of Europe.
