- The spectrum of disorders of the brain is large, covering hundreds of disorders that are listed in either the mental or neurological disorder chapters of the established international diagnostic classification systems. These disorders have a high prevalence as well as short- and long-term impairments and disabilities. Therefore they are an emotional, financial and social burden to the patients, their families and their social network. In a 2005 landmark study, we estimated for the first time the annual cost of 12 major groups of disorders of the brain in Europe and gave a conservative estimate of €386 billion for the year 2004. This estimate was limited in scope and conservative due to the lack of sufficiently comprehensive epidemiological and/or economic data on several important diagnostic groups. We are now in a position to substantially improve and revise the 2004 estimates. In the present report we cover 19 major groups of disorders, 7 more than previously, of an increased range of age groups and more cost items. We therefore present much improved cost estimates. Our revised estimates also now include the new EU member states, and hence a population of 514 million people.

- För beskrivning av Security Arenas övergripande verksamhet och organisation, samt definitioner av ett antal begrepp, se kapitlet Lindholmen Science Park driver samverkansprogrammet Security Arena.*** Inriktning på forskning och utveckling på Security Arena 2009 ***Under 2009 har forskning och utvecklingsarbete i huvudsak bedrivits enligt gällande avtal mellan Lindholmen Science Park och Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap (MSB).Konceptgenerering, pilotprojekt och studieuppdrag har både bedrivits inom de definierade temaområdena samt i ett fristående uppdrag, men också i ett par nyutvecklade samarbetsprojekt som en spin-off till den avtalsreglerade verksamheten.Fokus inom temaprojekten har i år legat på teknik för avancerad områdesövervakning, informationshantering och hot från organiserad brottslighet mot transportsektorn.Det har skett en fortsatt utveckling av Security Arenas arbetsmodell med tidig användarmedverkan i forskning och konceptgenerering. Via behovsanalyser med aktiv medverkan från områdesexperter visar arbetsresultaten att det går att utveckla relevanta koncept som i ett nästa steg ledertill praktiska prov tillsammans med användargrupper.En förstudie med MSBs lägescentral har genomförts i syfte att hitta tänkbara projekt som kan utveckla nya förmågor hos lägescentralen. Detta arbete kommer att fortsätta under 2010.*** Samordning och samverkan ***Security Arena har följande huvudaktörer: MSB, Chalmers tekniska högskola, Göteborgs universitet, Ericsson, Saab AB, AB Volvo. Dessutom medverkar slutanvändare, expertgrupper och samverkanspartners.Flera nya samarbeten som initierades under 2008 har vidareutvecklats under 2009. Bland annat har kontakterna med Umeå universitet resulterat i ett konkret projektsamarbete mellan Security Arena och CBRNE-centret inom EU/FP7. Dessutom har projektsamverkan med SAFER ochViktoriainstitutet fördjupats tack vare satsningarna på forskningsprojektet LiveResponse™ medViktoriainstitutet som utförare. Förutom fortsatt och utökad samverkan med nya instanser inom MSB har också samarbete med ett antal nya europeiska potentiella samverkansparter utvecklats.*** Kunskapsutveckling och informationsspridning ***Informationsspridningen har skett genom deltagande i en mängd konferenser och seminarier både nationellt och internationellt. På det lokala planet har lunchseminarieserien fortsatt att utvecklasunder året och når idag en bredare målgrupp än tidigare. Ämnesområdena för seminarierna har också utökats, vilket gör att vi når fler intressenter. Specifikt mot MSB kan nämnas att förstudien med MSBs lägescentral har gett möjlighet för Security Arenas parter att presentera en mängd resultat från genomfört arbete.*** Utvärdering och nytt ramavtal ***Under året genomfördes en utvärdering av det arbete som bedrivits på Security Arena från 2005. Utvärderingen var intervjubaserad och utfördes av Faugert & Co på uppdrag av MSB. Ett drygt 20-tal intressenter intervjuades och fick delge sina erfarenheter och synpunkter. Utvärderingen visadebl.a. på att samverkan mellan inblandade aktörer fungerar väl och att samarbetet ger tillgång till kontakter, information och problemställningar även utanför det egna området. En viktig styrka som framhölls var överensstämmelsen mellan hur satsningen är tänkt att fungera, dess programlogik, samt hur parterna de facto uppfattar verksamheten. I samband med 2009 års utgång upphörde det gällande ramavtalet mellan MSB och Lindholmen Science Park. Ett nytt ramavtal för perioden 2010 till och med 2012 har tecknats.*** Inriktning 2010 ***Planeringen av 2010 års arbete och framåt ska göras under våren. Fokus kommer att ligga på att ytterligare förstärka förmågan till behovsanalyser och innovativa lösningar i genereringen av koncept samt att knyta fler forskarkontakter med pågående samhällssäkerhetsforskning såväl nationellt som internationellt. Inriktningen är att de tematiska områdena ska bibehållas, men en värdering och omprövning kommer att ske. Detta kan resultera i någon eller några förändringarframöver.

Landskapets röster : Studier i Elias Martins bildvärld

- This thesis is about the Swedish landscape painter Elias Martin (1739-1818). The main interest is in his depictions of nature, landscape images and topographical views. Chronologically, it covers the period 1760 to 1810. The first part puts Martin's artistic achievement in a historiographic perspective and presents an overview of his artistic career - from his birthplace Stockholm to Paris and from there to London, where he successfully established himself on the English art scene in the 1770s. Returning to his native Sweden in 1780, he soon emerged as the country's leading landscapist of the period.In the second part of the thesis, a study is presented of Martin's relationship to the art markets of England and Sweden, and in the third an attempt is made, through the medium of a specific genre of Swedish eighteenth-century literature - travel writings - to gain a deeper insight into the attitudes and values of the period. Here, the focus of interest is on different ways of viewing nature and landscape art in Sweden in the late eighteenth century. On the basis of this discussion, an attempt is made to reconstruct a Swedish 'period eye', specific to the upper-class culture of the Gustavian age.These discussions of the importance of the market and of a Swedish period eye form the basis for an answer to the overarching question of this thesis, concerning the relationship between Martin's images and contemporary perceptions of nature. From the conclusions drawn, it becomes clear that different ways of relating to landscape existed side by side. The attitudes discernible in the artist's pictures, as in the travel writings of the period, are diverse and contradictory, complicating an understanding of the eighteenth century's view of nature as something uniform. Elias Martin's art thus illuminates the many vantage points and variations in the Gustavian era's feeling for nature.

Benefit measures for noise abatement : calculations for road and rail traffic noise

- PurposeThe aim of this study is to estimate monetary abatement values for road and rail traffic noise that can be used for policy purposes. However, a main objective is to critically discuss the assumptions necessary to convert the monetary values elicited in willingness to pay (WTP) studies to values than can be use for policy purposes.MethodsWe employ the hedonic regression technique on Swedish data to elicit individuals' preferences for noise abatement. Our elicited values are then converted to policy values and critically examined based on findings from a literature review.ResultsWe show that WTP for road and rail not only differs in levels but also that the relationship between the noise level and the marginal value differs between the two sources. We also show that a health cost component added to the WTP estimate, based on the assumption of uninformed property buyers, will be small but not negligible and that also modest differences in the assumption of the discount rates will have a significant effect on the estimated values.ConclusionsThe main implications from this study are: (i) WTP for road and railway noise abatement differs not only on absolute but also marginal levels, (ii) Even small differences in the chosen discount rate, which is necessary to convert WTP values from a hedonic price study to policy values, have large effects on the policy values, and (iii) We show how to add a health cost component to the WTP estimates in order for the monetary estimates to reflect the total social cost. However, we argue that the motivation for doing so is weak and that more research is needed on this issue.

- This study examines the effect of road and railway noise on property prices. It uses the hedonic regression technique on a Swedish data set that contains information about both road and railway noise for each property, and finds that road noise has a larger negative impact on the property prices than railway noise. This is in line with the evidence from the acoustical literature which has shown that individuals are more disturbed by road than railway noise, but contradicts recent results from a hedonic study on data of the United Kingdom.

A First Security Analysis of a Secure Intermodal Goods Transport System

- The goods transport business involves a lot of money and is a big part of the infrastructure of any European country. There are often many different actors involved in each transport and the communication network is rather complex due to the point-topoint communication structure. It is easy to understand why there is a high demand for increased simplicity and effectiveness. With this in mind, the e-Freight project which is based on PEPPOL has moved towards a standardized solution by developing a communication system based on access points (APs). These APs act as the interface to the system and makes it easy to establish communication between any two connected actors.With PEPPOL and e-Freight as a foundation, VOLVO leads the SITS project in close cooperation with Stena Line and DSV. The goal is to develop a harmonized communication framework that promotes increased sharing of information between actors and enable new applications to increase effectiveness and security in the chain of transportation. This leads to simplified accessibility for actors to a set of services by being connected to an AP. At the same time service providers benefit from being able to easily set up cloud services available for all actors. In addition to the back-office communication between APs, external devices such as cellphones, in-vehicle computers and check-in terminals can communicate directly with each other over short distances. This type of communication is only partially specified and a mutual standard is yet to be decided upon.In this report we have analyzed the SITS project from an IT-security perspective. The back-end system derived from e-Freight is looked into and communication links, access points, protocols, certificate handling etc., are examined. Another concern in the SITS project is the short-range communication between trucks and terminals. Since RFID is a highly potential candidate for use in this area, we have studied the technology by categorizing a typical RFID system into three distinct layers and researched important security threats with the classic CIA approach. Based on the security issues found, countermeasures such as encryption, authentication and protection against man-in-themiddle attacks are reviewed.

- Copper, zinc superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a ubiquitous homodimeric enzyme, whose misfolding and aggregation play a potentially key role in the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). SOD1 aggregation is thought to be preceded by dimer dissociation and metal loss, but the mechanisms by which the metal-free monomer aggregates remain incompletely understood. Here we use implicit solvent all-atom Monte Carlo (MC) methods to investigate the local unfolding dynamics of the β-barrel-forming SOD1 monomer. Although event-to-event variations are large, on average, we find clear differences in dynamics among the eight strands forming the β-barrel. Most dynamic is the eighth strand, β8, which is located in the dimer interface of native SOD1. For the four strands in or near the dimer interface (β1, β2, β7, and β8), we perform aggregation simulations to assess the propensity of these chain segments to self-associate. We find that β1 and β2 readily self-associate to form intermolecular parallel β-sheets, whereas β8 shows a very low aggregation propensity.

- Rock surface temperature changes in excess of 2°C min−1 have been argued to result in permanent strain in rock. The single threshold value and the supposed importance of a rate of 2°C min−1 rock temperature change is rejected, based on lack of a sufficient empirical basis, contrasting results from acoustic emission studies, varying strength properties of different rock types, lack of data on actual strain resulting from short-term temperature variations, and lack of notable long-term weathering effects in Nordic environments. Based on the presented discussion, the role of thermal shock weathering in cold regions is questioned and renewed emphasis is placed on the importance of absolute temperature and measurement of strain, as well as spatial temperature gradients.
