  • The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double beta decay (LEGEND)
  • 2017
  • In: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1894
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neu-trinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of ∼0.1 count /(FWHM·t·yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation 76Ge experiments GERDA and the Majorana Demonstrator, utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0νββ signal region of all 0νββ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale 76Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop a phased 0νββ experimental program with discovery potential at a half-life approaching or at 1028 years, using existing resources as appropriate to expedite physics results.

  • High accuracy 235U(n,f) data in the resonance energy region
  • 2016
  • In: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The U-235 neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

  • Towards the high-accuracy determination of the 238U fission cross section at the threshold region at CERN -€“ n_TOF
  • 2016
  • In: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The U-238 fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The U-238 fission cross section has been measured relative to the U-235 fission cross section at CERN - n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

  • Gas gain stabilisation in the ATLAS TRT detector
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 11:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The ATLAS (one of two general purpose detectors at the LHC) Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) is the outermost of the three tracking subsystems of the ATLAS Inner Detector. It is a large straw-based detector and contains about 350,000 electronics channels. The performance of the TRT as tracking and particularly particle identification detector strongly depends on stability of the operation parameters with most important parameter being the gas gain which must be kept constant across the detector volume. The gas gain in the straws can vary significantly with atmospheric pressure, temperature, and gas mixture composition changes. This paper presents a concept of the gas gain stabilisation in the TRT and describes in detail the Gas Gain Stabilisation System (GGSS) integrated into the Detector Control System (DCS). Operation stability of the GGSS during Run-1 is demonstrated.

  • High-accuracy determination of the 238U/235U fission cross section ratio up to ~1 GeV at n_TOF at CERN
  • 2015
  • In: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 91, s. 024602-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The U238 to U235 fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to ≈1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3–4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solve a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to ≈1 GeV.

  • Self-assembly of a binary mixture of iron oxide nanoparticles in Langmuir film : X-ray scattering study
  • 2017
  • In: Materials Chemistry and Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0254-0584 .- 1879-3312. ; 202, s. 31-39
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In present study we exploited Langmuir technique to produce self-assembled arrays composed of monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles 10 nm and 20 nm in diameter and of their binary mixture. A combination of in-situ X-ray reflectometry and Grazing-incident small-Angle X-ray scattering was used to obtain in-plane and out-of-plane structure of the arrays directly on the water surface. Surface pressure isotherms and X-ray reflectometry analysis showed that monodisperse 10 nm nanoparticles form a highly ordered monolayer, while 20 nm particles pack in three-dimensional clusters with a short-range (nearest-neighbor) correlations between the particles. In a binary mixture of 10 nm and 20 nm nano particles composed in proportion 3:1 the self-assembly process results in a structure where the monolayer of 10 nm particles is perturbed by the larger particles. Non-trivial mixing causes an enlargement of interparticle distance but keeps the symmetry of two-dimensional lattice of smaller nanoparticles. Estimation of the acting interactions and micromagnetic simulation suggest the optimal formation for monodisperse and binary ensembles.

  • Implementation of plasma simulators and plasma reconstruction workflows in ITER’s Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS)
  • 2017
  • In: 44th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, EPS 2017. - : European Physical Society (EPS).
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • IMAS has been installed within the majority of the ITER Members and is being used to support ITPA activities including code benchmarking and validation. Sophisticated workflows, such as Plasma Simulators and those describing H&CD systems, have been adapted to IMAS and applied to ITER scenarios. The framework is considered sufficiently flexible to handle all foreseen approaches to the integrated (probabilistic) determination of measurement parameters (and their errors). The inclusion of UDA within the IMAS data Access Layer has allowed the fetching of IDSs directly from experimental databases and the demonstration of the first plasma reconstruction chain. An interactive Live Display in which signals are selected through a web interface has also been demonstrated.

  • X-ray scattering characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles Langmuir film on water surface and on a solid substrate
  • 2016
  • In: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 616, s. 43-47
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the present study we compare a structure of a Langmuir film assembled from magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on water surface and a structure of the same film after its transfer to a solid substrate by the Langmuir-Schaefer method. In contrast to most of related studies, where different techniques are used to characterize the films before and after the deposition, we use the same combination of X-ray reflectometry and Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray scattering. In both cases - on a liquid and on a solid substrate - the film was identified as a well-ordered monolayer of the nanoparticles laterally organized in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. However parameters of the lattice were found to be slightly different depending on the type of the substrate. It is also demonstrated that Langmuir-Schaefer technique is the right way for deposition of such kind of the particles on a solid substrate.
