    • The ICES Working Group on comparative analyses between European Atlantic and Mediterra-nean Ecosystems to move towards an Ecosystem-based Approach to Fisheries (WGCOMEDA) recently completed its second three-year cycle. WGCOMEDA was established in 2014 and works in cooperation with other groups within the ICES Integrated Ecosystem Assessments Steering Group (IEASG).The working group objectives are: i) to set the analytical and data framework to develop common Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEA) exercises, ii) to advance several ongoing comparative studies on ecosystems stability, and iii) to frame comparative size- and traits-based approaches in both demersal and benthic ecosystems. To fulfil these objectives, the group focused on:1. Providing a more complete understanding of the structural and functional role of ecolog-ical stability across different types of ecosystems. The group has made considerable pro-gress on understanding the interplay between stability-diversity-resilience on both demersal and pelagic communities, conducting a resilience assessment to detect recent regime shifts, and examining the role of individual and species size in the stability of communities.2. Using functional trait information to assess the structure and functioning of demersal and benthic communities across Mediterranean and Atlantic systems and to predict their vul-nerability to fishing disturbance. Trait-based approaches (TBA) has been one of the most active topics of the group, with several Atlantic-Mediterranean comparative studies, and novel regional studies developing new approaches and methods combining trait infor-mation with methods and data beyond scientific surveys. In addition, specific trait-based approaches have been developed in the benthic realm by formulating disturbance and re-sistance indices on sensitive benthic habitats.3. Analyzing the link between ecological stability across different ecosystems types and eco-system properties (structure and function). Work on this topic has been initiated and will be one of the main objectives for the next cycle of the working group. This effort will evaluate the complexity of biodiversity patterns and investigate the link between ecosystem structure and stability.4. Identifying methods and products to support the implementation of IEA in regional eco-systems. The group discussed pros and cons of the main IEA methods and conducted an integrated trend analysis of Atlantic and Mediterranean fish communities with the goal to identify the importance of two main global drivers: fishing vs. natural hydroclimatic varia-bility. A user-friendly, open access shiny application and an R library were developed to apply this approach.WG COMEDA has collected common databases, developed novel tools, revealed common pat-terns and mechanism between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean as well as identified important differences that need to be consider in the future development of IEAs in contrasting ecosystems. Common gaps of knowledge have been also used to define new ToRs in the next WG COMEDA cycle which include: i) improving the assessment of the functional biodiversity, ii) better under-tand and integrate the complexity of marine biota, iii) investigating resilience an mechanisms of change, and iv) exploring potential options to integrate ecological and socio-economic dimen-sions.

    • A new turbine model validation technique that is based on adaptation of look-up tables is described this paper. Simulation results from the VIDYN turbine simulation program and measurements from Big Glenn wind turbine, located outside Gothenburg, Sweden are used as an input to this new model validation technique. The models of the flapwise bending moment and power coefficient are validated for Big Glenn turbine. Measurement data are acquired during normal turbine operation. Verification results show good agreement between model outputs and measured data. The method allows prediction in a wide range of turbine operating variables, using only few measured points.

  • Structural Damage Detection in Real Time: Implementation of 1D Convolutional Neural Networks for SHM Applications

    • Most of the classical structural damage detection systems involve two processes, feature extraction and feature classification. Usually, the feature extraction process requires large computational effort which prevent the application of the classical methods in real-time structural health monitoring applications. Furthermore, in many cases, the hand-crafted features extracted by the classical methods fail to accurately characterize the acquired signal, resulting in poor classification performance. In an attempt to overcome these issues, this paper presents a novel, fast and accurate structural damage detection and localization system utilizing one dimensional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) arguably for the first time in SHM applications. The proposed method is capable of extracting optimal damage-sensitive features automatically from the raw acceleration signals, allowing it to be used for real-time damage detection. This paper presents the preliminary experiments conducted to verify the proposed CNN-based approach.

    • Malnutrition is the most common comorbidity during the continuum of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and negatively impacts clinical outcomes, response to therapy, quality of life, and costs. The intensive conditioning regimen administered before transplant causes inflammatory damages to the gastrointestinal system, which themselves contribute to trigger graft versus host disease (GvHD) in the allogeneic setting. GvHD and other post-transplant complications such as infections adversely affect food intake and gut absorption of nutrients. Consequently, patients exhibit signs of malnutrition such as weight loss and muscle wasting, thus triggering a “vicious circle” that favours additional complications. Among HSCT centres, there is marked variability in nutritional care, from screening for malnutrition to nutritional intervention. The present paper, elaborated by the Cellular Therapy and Immunobiology Working Party and the Nurses Group of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, aims at defining a roadmap that identifies the main nutritional critical issues in the field of HSCT. This document will be propaedeutic to the development of clinical algorithms to counteract risk factors of malnutrition, based on scientific evidence and shared among HSCT centres, and thus maximize transplant outcomes.

  • Multidimensional auctions for long-term procurement contracts under the threat of early exit : the case of conservation auctions

    • In this paper we study how early-exit options, embedded in long-term procurement contracts which do not provide for sufficiently strong incentives against contract breach, can affect bidding behaviors in multidimensional procurement auctions and the parties' expected payoffs. We show first that bidders' payoff is lower when competing for contracts with unenforceable contract terms. Secondly, that neglecting the risk of opportunistic behavior by sellers can lead to contract awards that do not maximize the buyer's potential payoff. Finally, we make suggestions about how to mitigate potential misallocations, by pointing out the role of eligibility rules and competition among bidders.

  • Performance Peculiarities of Viterbi Decoder in Mathworks Simulink, GNU Radio and Other Systems with Likewise Implementation

    • The performance of convolutional codes decoding by the Viterbi algorithm should not depend on the particular distribution of zeros and ones in the input messages, as they are linear. However, it was identified that specific implementations of Add-Compare-Select unit for the Viterbi Algorithm demonstrate the decoding performance that depends on proportion of elements in the input message. It is conjectured that the modern commercial hard- and software defined communication equipment may also feature similar implementation and as such their decoding performance could also vary.
