    • In search of traces of communal planning in insula V1 certain features have been targeted for scrutiny, such as the boundary walls of the insula, separation walls between properties, and the water supply and drainage systems. In this perspective the well preserved East boundary wall was informative. Studied from the back street it presents facades of no less than four different houses. Communal effort is witnessed but once. Binders link the East facades of the two neighbouring houses that later were joined into the double atrium house of Caecilius Iucundus. Otherwise, here as in other boundaries to be found within the Northern part of the insula, the area studied up to now by the Swedish Pompeii Project, strict respect of property boundaries seems to be observed. Walls meet mutely, without binding features. Our study of remnants of earlier structures conserved fragmentarily within later walls, as well as results yielded from trial trenches tend to indicate that some of these early structures followed other alignments than the later architecture. Some could also hypothetically be traced for longer distances than permitted by the later property plots. It would however, seem as though these structures were created not as communal boundaries but in response of constraints imposed by the natural environment. The older architecture seems to have preferred areas on higher ground or on the eastern flank of the insula, distant from the future Via di Vesuvio/ Stabiana. This artery, originally a natural crevice, was probably difficult to control. In times of heavy rains it may easily have converted itself into a natural water course.
