    • Radiative lifetime measurements were performed by time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique for eight even-parity levels of the astrophysically important ion Er+ over the energy range from 33753 to 55317 cm(-1). Free erbium ions were generated by a laser-induced plasma. A narrow bandwidth UV laser pulse (1 ns) was employed to populate selectively the short-lived upper levels, and the lifetime value were evaluated from the time-resolved fluorescence signals. The lifetimes reported fall in the range of 3-35ns with the experimental accuracy 5-8%.

  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions

    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Photocurrents of 14 mu m quantum-well infrared photodetectors

    • We study the factors that determine photogenerated carriers and response wavelengths of photocurrents of long wavelength (similar to14 mum) quantum well (QW) infrared photodetectors (QWIPs). The material structures of QWIPs are first characterized by the photoluminescence measurements (PL). By calculating the density of photogenerated carriers in the continuum above the energy barriers using the PL calibrated QWIP structures, we have demonstrated that due to the sample quality, the photocarriers can be either in miniband states (Bloch states in the multiple quantum wells), or they transport from one quantum well to the next in the form of running waves. By including possible scattering processes at the QWIP working temperature to link the theoretically calculated photocarrier density with the experimentally measured photocurrent, it is shown that the width of the photocurrent peaks of 14 mum GaAs/AlGaAs QWIPs under investigation is determined by the optical phonon emissions of photocarriers. We have further calculated the densities of photocarriers in the QWIPs reported in the literature. It is shown that the Bloch wave boundary conditions are appropriate for QWIPs with narrow QWs, whereas running wave boundary conditions are appropriate for wide QWs.

    • Programmed cell death (apoptosis) functions as a mechanism to eliminate unwanted or irreparably damaged cells ultimately leading to their orderly phagocytosis in the absence of calamitous inflammatory responses. Recent studies have demonstrated that the generation of free radical intermediates and subsequent oxidative stress are implicated as part of the apoptotic execution process. Oxidative stress may simply be an unavoidable yet trivial byproduct of the apoptotic machinery; alternatively, intermediates or products of oxidative stress may act as essential signals for the execution of the apoptotic program. This review is focused on the specific role of oxidative stress in apoptotic signaling, which is realized via phosphatidylserine-dependent pathways leading to recognition of apoptotic cells and their effective clearance. In particular, the mechanisms involved in selective phosphatidylserine oxidation in the plasma membrane during apoptosis and its association with disturbances of phospholipid asymmetry leading to phosphatidylserine externalization and recognition by macrophage receptors are at the center of our discussion. The putative importance of this oxidative phosphatidylserine signaling in lung physiology and disease are also discussed.

    • By using the shake-flask procedure, the distribution ratios (D) at infinite dilution and 298.1 K of 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) between room-temperature ionic liquids, 1-alkyl-3-methylimiazolium hexafluorophosphates ([CnMIM] [PF6], n = 4 and 8), and water were determined. The log D values are in the range of 3.34-4.36, which increased very slowly with the molar mass of PAHs.

    • Detergent given as an aerosol and large tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) have been observed, by us, to promote lung injury by an additive effect on alveolocapillary barrier function. The surfactant system may be further damaged if protein leakage occurs into the alveoli. The aim was to study the effect of detergent and LTVV on the alveolar leakage of albumin and also the effect of detergent on surface activity of lung washings and lung tissue extracts. Technetium-99m-labelled human serum albumin was given intravenously. The alveolar leakage of albumin was measured after perturbing the surfactant system with the detergent dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate either singly or in combination with LTVV. Four groups of rabbits were studied after 3 h of experimental ventilation. Surface tension measurements of tissue extracts, lung mechanics and gas exchange did not show any differences between groups. Wet lung weight and albumin leakage were significantly increased in the two groups subjected to LTVV compared with groups given normal tidal volume ventilation. Low doses of detergent did not affect surface activity of lung tissue extracts or alveolar leakage of albumin. LTVV increased alveolar leakage of albumin and produced oedema. No additive effect was seen when detergent and LTVV were combined.
