  • Effective Potential for Magnetic Resonance Measurements of Restricted Diffusion
  • 2017
  • In: Frontiers in Physics. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-424X. ; 5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The signature of diffusive motion on the NMR signal has been exploited to characterize the mesoscopic structure of specimens in numerous applications. For compartmentalized specimens comprising isolated subdomains, a representation of individual pores is necessary for describing restricted diffusion within them. When gradient waveforms with long pulse durations are employed, a quadratic potential profile is identified as an effective energy landscape for restricted diffusion. The dependence of the stochastic effective force on the center-of-mass position is indeed found to be approximately linear (Hookean) for restricted diffusion even when the walls are sticky. We outline the theoretical basis and practical advantages of our picture involving effective potentials.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • A Matter of Health? : A 24-Week Daily and Weekly Diary Study on Workplace Bullying Perpetrators’ Psychological and Physical Health
  • 2023
  • In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 20:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Workplace bullying (WB) studies focusing on perpetrators are increasing. Many processes, events, circumstances and individual states are being studied to understand and inhibit what causes some employees to become perpetrators. Using a 24-week diary design and drawing on the Conservation of Resources Theory, we investigated how sleep, physical activity (PA), and being bullied predicted perpetration on a within-level. On a between-level, we controlled for a supervisory position, psychological distress and mental illnesses over 38 employees from Spain and Turkey. Their average age was 38.84 years (SD = 11.75). They were from diverse sectors (15.8% in manufacturing, 15.8% in education, 13.2% in wholesale and retail trade, 13.2% in information and communication, 7.9% in health, 7.9% in other services and 26.3% from other sectors) with diverse professions such as finance manager, psychologist, graphic designer, academic, human resources professional, forensic doctor, IT and Administration head, municipality admin executive, waiter, and sales executives. Data collection was conducted over 24 consecutive work weeks, where only 31 participants were involved in perpetration (final observations = 720). We analyzed the data using multilevel structural equation modeling decomposed into within-and-between-person variance parts. The results indicated that on a within-level, PA as steps taken during the work week and being bullied positively predicted perpetration the same week, while sleep quality did not. By connecting sleep, physical exercise and WB literature, we draw attention to the health condition of perpetrators. Organizations should actively inhibit workplace bullying and be mindful of employees’ physical activities at work or commuting to work. Managers should also be attentive to physical fatigue that employees may feel due to their responsibilities in their private lives and allow employees to rest and recuperate to inhibit negative behaviors at work.

  • Strategies to mitigate the effects of future extreme heat waves - A new method for mapping
  • 2020
  • In: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. ; , s. 1.06-1.10
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Global warming is increasingly causing extreme weather events, such as heat waves. One-way heat waves are problematic in society, particularly in urban areas, is because of their negative impact on vulnerable groups including elderly people and children. Organizations such as municipalities that are responsible for local schools, day care centres and/or elderly homes, may struggle to provide the necessary care and function during extreme heat waves. This work explores how remote sensing images providing historical data of land surface temperatures (LST) can be used to create summer urban heat island maps and heat wave intensity, and in the longer run, how such information could be used by municipalities and other actors to mitigate effects of future heat waves. The method presented in this study was used to detect the “hot spots” in two participating Swedish municipalities and identify the municipal services located within these spots based on MODIS (1 km) and Landsat (30 m) LST datasets. Furthermore, this study showed that urban heat island phenomenon existed in the two participating municipalities. In general, this methodology can be applicable at both local and regional scale, although it might require additional site-specific data. © Content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence. • 2011
  • In: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 48:1, s. 51-61
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The necessary nationalismThis article deals with the role of fictional narratives, especially the modern novel, in the formation of national identities. Naguib Mafouz’s Cairo trilogy is referred to as an example of how literature may both serve as the mirror image of national identities and as an agency in their formation. The sense of community attachment to a modern state is ”thinner” than to a family or traditional village and/or tribe, though no less vital. Drawing on Norbert Elias’s concept of ”survival unit,” Benedict Anderson’s ”imagined communities” and recent studies in the field of comparative literature by Gregory Jusdanis and Azade Seyhan, this article argues for the necessity of the nation – in spite of its unfavourable chauvinistic reputation. This contention is discussed in relation to recent literary developments in Turkey and recent debates on nationhood in a Swedish context.
