  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • In: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • A systematic genomewide linkage study in 353 sib pairs with schizophrenia.
  • 2003
  • In: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 73:6, s. 1355-1367
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We undertook a genomewide linkage study in a total of 353 affected sib pairs (ASPs) with schizophrenia. Our sample consisted of 179 ASPs from the United Kingdom, 134 from Sweden, and 40 from the United States. We typed 372 microsatellite markers at approximately 10-cM intervals. Our strongest finding was a LOD score of 3.87 on chromosome 10q25.3-q26.3, with positive results being contributed by all three samples and a LOD-1 interval of 15 cM. This finding achieved genomewide significance (P<.05), on the basis of simulation studies. We also found two regions, 17p11.2-q25.1 (maximum LOD score [MLS] = 3.35) and 22q11 (MLS = 2.29), in which the evidence for linkage was highly suggestive. Linkage to all of these regions has been supported by other studies. Moreover, we found strong evidence for linkage (genomewide P<.02) to 17p11.2-q25.1 in a single pedigree with schizophrenia. In our view, the evidence is now sufficiently compelling to undertake detailed mapping studies of these three regions.

  • Production methodology and reactivity of silica substituted a phase tricalcium phosphate
  • 2004
  • In: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1437-1437
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A silica substituted alpha phase tricalcium phosphate was developed by way of solid state reaction. The difference in reactivity of two different production methods using isothermal calorimetry and X- ray diffraction was also recorded. It was suggested that a silica substituted alpha phase tricalcium phosphate can be produced and characterized by way of X-ray measurement. Referencing selected significant peaks for α-TCP, β-TCP and apatite.

  • Preparation and study of the reactivity of Sr-substituted alpha tricalcium phosphates
  • 2004
  • In: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1438-1438
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The substitution in varying amounts of strontium (Sr) for calcium in the alpha tricalcium phosphate (α TCP) structure was investigated. The effects on the reactivity towards the formation of hydroxypalatite on hydration were also studied. The prepared α-TCP and the fully hydrated α-TCP powders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction and the CuKα1 radiation. It was found that the alpha form of Sr-substituted TCP could be prepared by rapid quenching in air and the reactivity of the Sr-substituted TCPs with water was also found to be lowered with increasing Sr amounts.

  • A FEM approach to simulation of tilting-pad thrust bearing assemblies
  • 2003
  • In: Tribology International. - 0301-679X .- 1879-2464. ; 36:11, s. 807-814
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Finite-element method (FEM) modelling is applied to analysis of the performance of hydrodynamic tilting-pad thrust bearing assemblies. A 3D model of the bearing assembly that includes the bearing pad and shaft is used to assess the influence of operating conditions on bearing parameters such as temperature and oil film distributions across the pads. The model is first applied to the investigation of a spherically pivoted-pad. Through comparison with results from experiments carried out on just such a bearing, good correlation between the model and experimental results is found for maximum oil film temperature, pressure distribution and thickness. The model is then applied to the examination of a bearing having spring-supported babbitt pads. The effect of different oil types on a spring-supported thrust bearing is analysed. Further application of the model to investigate the same spring-supported pad, this time with a resilient surface coating, is discussed.

  • EPS - an interactive collaborative game using non-verbal communication
  • 2003
  • In: Proceedings of the Stockholm Music Acoustics Conference, August 6-9, 2003 (SMAC 03), Stockholm, Sweden. ; , s. 561-563
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The interactive game environment EPS (expressive performance space), presented in this short paper, is a work still in progress. EPS involves participants in an activity using non-verbal emotional expressions. Two teams use expressive gestures in either voice or body movements to compete. Each team has an avatar controlled either by singing into a microphone or by moving in front of a video camera. Participants/players control their avatars by using acoustical or motion cues. The avatar is navigated /moving around in a 3D distributed virtual environment using the Octagon server and player system. The voice input is processed using a musical cue analysis module yielding performance variables such as tempo, sound level and articulation as well as an emotional prediction. Similarly, movements captured from the video camera are analyzed in terms of different movement cues. The target group is children aged 13- 16 and the purpose is to elaborate new forms of collaboration.
