  • Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) end-cap
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented - these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

  • The on-orbit calibration of the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2009
  • In: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 32:3-4, s. 193-219
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope began its on-orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft boresight alignments. Here we describe on-orbit calibration results obtained using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch. These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly released in August 2009.

  • Improvement of building extraction using decision fusion of locally and globally enhanced IKONOS images
  • 2008
  • In: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper a fully automated algorithm for building extraction from remote sensing IKONOS images is presented. Local and global enhancement of an original image improves the rate of building detection in some cases. However, some undesirable effects could occur due to image enhancement. As a result the Bayesian classification method which has been previously used could result in errors. To deal with such problems, decision fusion is used together with a shadow-based verification step to achieve a better result from locally and globally enhanced classified images. Experimental results justify the efficiency of the proposed method in dealing with the problem of building extraction in IKONOS images.

  • Motion based unsharp masking [MUSM] for extracting building from urban images
  • 2008
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In recent decades, classification of remote sensing images from urban area as a means to achieve necessitated information for some applications such as automatic map updating and GIS, planning and emergency response has become one of the challenging subjects for image processing researches. In this paper, a method for classification of remote sensing image from urban area is addressed. First, motion based unsharp masking [MUSM] is applied to the input image to enhance its high frequency components. Then, laplacian of image as input feature for the Bayesian classifier is utilized. After that, size filter is used for large and small building discrimination. The Classification of small and large building using unsharp mask and Bayesian discrimination function has increased in aspect of accuracy in comparison with original Bayesian method for Classification of urban area. Experiments justify the efficiency of the proposed approach.

  • Electrochemical and spectrophotometric studies on dyes and proteins labelled with dyes
  • 2005
  • In: Synthetic Metals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0379-6779. ; 155:2, s. 426-429
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Electrochemical and fluorometric studies on a few selected phenazine and phenoxazine dyes has been carried out in free conditions and when covalently attached to a protein. The dyes have been coupled using the conventional coupling agent carbodiimide (derivative). Neutral Red and Nile Blue A, show significant shifts in their emission peaks to shorter wavelengths on binding to bovine serum albumin (BSA). Phenazine dyes such as Safranine O and Neutral Red show a shift in their formal redox potential to more positive potential on binding to BSA along with the two electron transfers taking place in a single step unlike incase of the free dyes where the two electron transfers take place at different potentials. Nile Blue A shows a negative shift in the reduction peak on covalently binding to BSA. These dyes when covalently coupled to the proteins mediate intramolecular electron transfers.
