- I oktober 2010 träffades arkeologer, medeltidsarkeologer, historiker, idéhistoriker, etnologer, latinare och religionshistoriker i Lund för att diskutera arkeologins historia. Symposiet blev grund för denna artikelsamling. I boken beskriver forskare hur idéer, människor, platser, fornlämningar och fornfynd har format synen på det förflutna. Hur har metoder uppstått och spridits? Vad fanns innan arkeologin och vem skapade den, forskare, kufar eller kungligheter? Vad visar våra museer? Hur har arkeologer, lokalbefolkning och myndigheter mötts?Arkeologi handlar om forntiden, men speglar också alltid samtiden.

- In 1827 Johan Henrik Schröder (1791–1857), Erik Gustaf Geijer (1783–1847) and Gustaf Wilhelm Gumaelius (1789–1877) travelled through Västergötland to study ancient monuments. They were brothers in the patriotic society Götiska Förbundet, which encouraged antiquarian research. They communicated their findings with the Secretary of the society, Jacob Adlerbeth (1785–1844), the driving force in Swedish antiquarian activities. Schröder wrote letters to Adlerbeth and Geijer and drew sketches of the most interesting monuments. The travellers were highly impressed by the many passage graves, and most of their notes are about them. The surviving documents from the journey constitute rare and valuable early documentation of passage graves in the Falköping district. Passage graves were among the most important ancient monuments in the early 1800s. Scholars debated questions of chronology and the character of the earliest part of prehistory based on the passage graves, and several members of Götiska Förbundet wrote important treatises. The paper draws attention to the fact that much remains to be discovered in the archives, both documents on the history of archaeology and information on ancient monuments.
