- With the quantity of genomic data increasing at an exponential rate, it is imperative that these data be captured electronically, in a standard format. Standardization activities must proceed within the auspices of open-access and international working bodies. To tackle the issues surrounding the development of better descriptions of genomic investigations, we have formed the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC). Here, we introduce the minimum information about a genome sequence (MIGS) specification with the intent of promoting participation in its development and discussing the resources that will be required to develop improved mechanisms of metadata capture and exchange. As part of its wider goals, the GSC also supports improving the 'transparency' of the information contained in existing genomic databases.

- We present a draft sequence of the genome of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector for yellow fever and dengue fever, which at approximately 1376 million base pairs is about 5 times the size of the genome of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. Nearly 50% of the Ae. aegypti genome consists of transposable elements. These contribute to a factor of approximately 4 to 6 increase in average gene length and in sizes of intergenic regions relative to An. gambiae and Drosophila melanogaster. Nonetheless, chromosomal synteny is generally maintained among all three insects, although conservation of orthologous gene order is higher (by a factor of approximately 2) between the mosquito species than between either of them and the fruit fly. An increase in genes encoding odorant binding, cytochrome P450, and cuticle domains relative to An. gambiae suggests that members of these protein families underpin some of the biological differences between the two mosquito species.

- The thickness of eosinophilic band in collagenous colitis (CC) was assessed by 3 methods: histologic estimates (22 observers), conventional measurements using a calibrated micrometric scale (1 observer), and semiautomatic micrometric measurements (1 observer). By the histologic estimate technique, 7.4% of the results failed to diagnose CC; by calibrated micrometry, the failure was 6% and by semiautomatic micrometry, 6%. The main difficulty in measuring the thickness of the CC band is that the deeper border of the band appears fuzzy and hairy-irregular. CC should be defined not exclusively on the basis of the thickness of the collagen table, but as a microscopic constellation characterized by a distorted superficial cell arrangement, with areas of epithelial denudation and inflammatory cells in the superficial epithelium and the lamina propria. In agreement with Lazenby's statement: "Focusing solely on the collagen band can result in both over- and underdiagnosis"

- Skeletal muscle wasting and impaired muscle function in response to mechanical ventilation and immobilization in intensive care unit (ICU) patients are clinically challenging partly due to 1) the poorly understood intricate cellular and molecular networks and 2) the unavailability of an animal model mimicking this condition. By employing a unique porcine model mimicking the conditions in the ICU with long-term mechanical ventilation and immobilization, we have analyzed the expression profile of skeletal muscle biopsies taken at three time points during a 5-day period. Among the differentially regulated transcripts, extracellular matrix, energy metabolism, sarcomeric and LIM protein mRNA levels were downregulated, while ubiquitin proteasome system, cathepsins, oxidative stress responsive genes and heat shock proteins (HSP) mRNAs were upregulated. Despite 5 days of immobilization and mechanical ventilation single muscle fiber cross-sectional areas as well as the maximum force generating capacity at the single muscle fiber level were preserved. It is proposed that HSP induction in skeletal muscle is an inherent, primary, but temporary protective mechanism against protein degradation. To our knowledge, this is the first study that isolates the effect of immobilization and mechanical ventilation in an ICU condition from various other cofactors.

- I denna bok berättar vi om våra erfarenheter från undervisning i form av gruppdiskussioner runt kontextrika (verklighetsanknutna) problem, vi ger tips på hur sådana problem kan konstrueras och vi delar med oss av exempel på kontextrika problem. Vi som skrivit denna bok har använt gruppdiskussioner runt kontextrika problem under några år i vår egen undervisning och vi tycker oss se att denna undervisning ofta fungerar bra. Vi har också deltagit i ett gemensamt forskningsprojekt med syftet att förstå hur användningen av gruppdiskussioner med kontextrika problem påverkar studenternas/elevernas förståelse av fysikaliska begrepp. Vi undersökte även hur problemen bör utformas för att intressera gymnasieeleverna. Resultaten från detta projekt utgör en bakgrund för boken.

Basic study of photodiode signals from laser welding emissions

- Photodiodes are commonly used to monitor laser welding as a cheap, rugged, online method to get an indication of changes in the process, particularly the occurrence of defects. However, the correlations between the signal characteristics and the process are usually empirical and not fully understood. In this basic study we try to obtain a better understanding of the generation of the signals from the laser welding process. By synchronising high speed imaging with photodiode signals in three wavelength spectra, we attempt to identify the contributions from different geometrical domains and temporal events, particularly from the weld pool surface, the keyhole opening and the escaping metal vapour flow. It is particularly valuable to study dynamic behaviour during pulsed laser welding. A quantitative estimation is difficult, but , with the help of high speed photography and modelling, clear correlations between different dynamic events and signal changes can be identified.
