    • Key Odin operational and instrumental features and highlights from our sub-millimetre and millimetre wave observations of H2O, H218O, NH3, 15NH3 and O2 are presented, with some insights into accompanying Odin Letters in this A&A issue. We focus on new results where Odin's high angular resolution, high frequency resolution, large spectrometer bandwidths, high sensitivity or/and frequency tuning capability are crucial: H2O mapping of the Orion KL, W3, DR21, S140 regions, and four comets; H2O observations of Galactic Centre sources, of shock enhanced H2O towards the SNR IC443, and of the candidate infall source IRAS 16293-2422; H218O detections in Orion KL and in comet Ikeya-Zhang; sub-mm detections of NH3 in Orion KL (outflow, ambient cloud and bar) and ρ Oph, and very recently, of 15NH3 in~Orion KL. Simultaneous sensitive searches for the 119 GHz line of O2 have resulted in very low abundance limits, which are difficult to accomodate in chemical models. We also demonstrate, by means of a quantitative comparison of Orion KL H2O results, that the Odin and SWAS observational data sets are very consistently calibrated. Odin is a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes), and the Centre National d'études Spatiales (CNES, France). The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) has been the prime industrial contractor, and is also responsible for the satellite operation from its Odin Mission Control Centre at SSC in Solna and its Odin Control Centre at ESRANGE near Kiruna in northern Sweden.   • Molecular gas in the galaxy M83 : Its distribution, kinematics, and relation to star formation

    • The barred spiral galaxy M83 (NGC5236) has been observed in the 12CO J=1–0 and J=2–1 millimetre lines with the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The sizes of the CO maps are 100×100, and they cover the entire optical disk. The CO emission is strongly peaked toward the nucleus. The molecular spiral arms are clearly resolved and can be traced for about 360º. The total molecular gas mass is comparable to the total Hi mass, but H2 dominates in the optical disk.Iso-velocity maps show the signature of an inclined, rotating disk, but also the effects of streaming motions along the spiral arms. The dynamical mass is determined and compared to the gas mass. The pattern speed is determined from the residual velocity pattern, and the locations of various resonances are discussed. The molecular gas velocity dispersion is determined, and a trend of decreasing dispersion with increasing galactocentric radius is found.A total gas (H2+Hi+He) mass surface density map is presented, and compared to the critical density for star formation of an isothermal gaseous disk. The star formation rate (SFR) in the disk is estimated using data from various star formation tracers. The different SFR estimates agree well when corrections for extinctions, based on the total gas mass map, are made. The radial SFR distribution shows features that can be associated with kinematic resonances. We also find an increased star formation efficiency in the spiral arms. Different Schmidt laws are fitted to the data. The star formation properties of the nuclear region, based on high angular resolution HST data, are also discussed.

    • Polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration into tissues in host defense and inflammatory diseasecauses increased vascular permeability and edema formation through unknown mechanisms.Here, we report the involvement of a paracrine mechanism in neutrophil-evoked alteration inendothelial barrier function. We show that upon neutrophil adhesion to the endothelial lining,leukocytic 2 integrin signaling triggers the release of neutrophil-borne heparin-binding protein(HBP), also known as CAP37/azurocidin, a member of the serprocidin family of neutrophilcationic proteins. HBP induced Ca++-dependent cytoskeletal rearrangement and intercellular gapformation in endothelial-cell monolayers in vitro, and increased macromolecular efflux in microvesselsin vivo. Moreover, selective inactivation of HBP prevented the neutrophils from inducingendothelial hyperpermeability. Our data suggest a fundamental role of neutrophil-derivedHBP in the vascular response to neutrophil trafficking in inflammation. Targeting this moleculein inflammatory disease conditions offers a new strategy for prevention of endothelial barrierdysfunction caused by misdirected leukocyte activation.

    • Using a sensitive and rapid method combining broad-range PCR amplification of bacterial 16S rDNA fragments and pyrosequencing for detection, identification and typing, we have found contaminating bacterial DNA in our reagents used for PCR. Identified bacteria are the water-borne bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Xanthomonas, Ralstonia and Bacillus. Our results are in concordance with recent reports of contaminated industrial water systems. In light of this conclusion, we believe that there is a need for increased awareness of possible contamination in uncertified widely used molecular biology reagents, including ultra-pure water. Since sequence-based 16S rDNA techniques are used in a variety of settings for bacterial typing and the characterization of microbial communities, we feel that future certification of molecular biology reagents, as free of nucleic acids, would be advantageous. ⌐ 2002 Federation of European Microbiological Societies.     • This paper describes a Cassegrain optics-based chemiluminescence sensor (CS) for measurements in gas turbine combustors. The chemiluminescence sensor measures the equivalence ratio of reacting fuel and air mixtures, and can identify the flame location, in partially premixed flames. It has the potential for monitoring the degree of premixedness of reacting fuel and air in industrial gas turbine combustors, where operation with lean premixed mixtures is important for reduction of NO, emissions. The spatial resolution of the sensor is evaluated by comparing OH* chemiluminescence measurement from the CS with laser induced OH fluorescence, in the cone-shaped premixed flame of a Bunsen burner. The ability of the sensor to measure in a modified micro-gas turbine environment burning a methane/air, as well as, a methane/ water/air flame (humidified flame) is also demonstrated.

    • Three adult de novo acute myeloid leukemias (AML M1, M2, and M4) with an isochromosome 7p are presented. No additional abnormalities were deterred by G-band and multicolor, using combined binary ratio labeling, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses, indicating that the i(7p) was the sole. i.e., the primary, chromosomal aberration. Although the patients were elderly-68, 72, and 78 years old-they all responded very well to chemotherapy, achieving complete remission lasting more than a year. Further FISH analyses, using painting, centromeric, as well as 7q11.2-specific YAC probes, revealed that the i(7p) contained two centromeres and that the breakpoints were located in 7q11.2. Thus, the abnormality should formally be designated idic(7)(q11.2). The detailed mapping disclosed a breakpoint heterogeneity, with the breaks in 7q11.2 varying among the cases, being at least 1,310 kb apart. Furthermore, the breakpoints also differed within one of the cases, being located on both the proximal and the distal side of the most centromeric probe used. Based on our three patients, as well as on a previously reported 82-year-old patient with AML M2 and idic(7)(q11) as the only chromosomal change, we suggest that this abnormality, as the sole anomaly, is associated with AML in elderly patients who display a good response to induction chemotherapy and. hence, have a favorable prognosis. Furthermore, the heterogeneous breakpoints in 7q11.2 suggest that the important functional outcome of the idic(7)(q11.2) is the genomic imbalance incurred, i.e., gain of 7p and loss of 7q material, rather than a rearrangement of a specific gene.
