  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Research has been performed model the dynamics of different kinds of wastewater treatment systems. Plant models are built up from standard modules of subprocesses. Available model knowledge has been packaged into suitable software modules and a library of simulation models has been created. The paper describes this library and the kind of simulations that can be performed.

  • Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operational Data by a Common Data Base System

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development of a common data base system for wastewater treatment operating data evaluation is discussed. Data records from wastewater treatment plants which have been converted into standard files in a common data base are used as a case study. Advanced programs for data analysis and simulation have been used to evaluate the data in the common data base. The paper discusses software standardization problems and some of the typical results which can be obtained in the analysis of plant operational data.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Research was conducted to examine the transient performance of a final settler. Dynamical models of minimal order were derived based on effluent data collected from a pilot scale settler. Parameter values for the models were adjusted until satisfactory fits to the observed data were obtained. Results were compared to select those models with the simplest structures and the ability to predict the major aspects of observed performance. To take into consideration the time-varying character of settling properties, on-line recursive identification was used to update model parameters. Information from such updated models can be incorporated into schemes to control influent pumping and used to warn that those properties are deteriorating.

  • Early oral contraceptive use as a prognostic factor in breast cancer
  • 1988
  • In: Anticancer research. - 0250-7005. ; 8:1, s. 29-32
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The survival of 193 premenopausal breast cancer patients was investigated in relation to their history of early use of oral contraceptives. The women were born in 1939 or later and diagnosed in the southern health care region of Sweden. Women, who had started their oral contraceptive use (OC-use) before 20 years of age had a significantly lower survival rate as compared with those who had never used OC and late users (p = 0.02 and = 0.04 respectively, generalized Wilcoxon test). For women who started OC-use between 20 to 25 years of age, a tendency for a shorter survival was seen in comparison with women who had never used OC (p = 0.18). For all patients simultaneously, the relative risk adjusted for age at diagnosis increased for earlier OC-start. When only stages II and III were considered in a stratified multivariate model, a signficantly elevated risk was seen for early users of OC irrespective of age or of adjuvant treatment given. The estrogen and progesterone receptor concentrations of the primary tumor were significantly lower among early users (p = 0.001 and p = 0.05 respectively).

  • Oral-Contraceptive Use and the Risk of Breast Cancer
  • 1987
  • In: New England Journal of Medicine. - 0028-4793. ; 316:3, s. 162-164
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To the Editor: The study on oral-contraceptive use and the risk of breast cancer from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (Aug. 14 issue)1 seems to be reassuring for oral-contraceptive users. But, as stated in the editorial by Shapiro in the same issue,2 there are some weak points that need further elucidation. We have found a highly increased risk of breast cancer among young (teenage) oral-contraceptive users in southern Sweden.3 From incidence figures for Sweden, an increase in premenopausal breast cancer can be seen to have started in about 1975,…
