  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article considers literature not as the victim ofsurveillance, but as an effect of it. A short overviewof the relation between literature and surveillanceserves as the background to an analysis of a fewtexts by Swedish poet and playwright Lars Norén(b. 1944). Two of his collections of poetry from the1960s are looked upon as reports from inside themind delivered to the supervising reader. In thispoetry, the information flow becomes too rich, andthe intensity of the writing makes it finally unreada-ble – as if a typewriter has been directly wired tothe brain. In the plays, the hallucinatory effects areproduced by surveillance technology, but also bytheatre itself. These plays put the audience before aphysical force much stronger than that of thepoetry, transforming the disinterested theatre audi-ence into a supervising authority watching but notallowed to act. The plays form a closed circuit fromwhich there is no escape for either the charactersor the audience.
