  • Progress in integrated assessment and modelling
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling & Software. - 1364-8152. ; 17:3, s. 209-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental processes have been modelled for decades. However. the need for integrated assessment and modeling (IAM) has, town as the extent and severity of environmental problems in the 21st Century worsens. The scale of IAM is not restricted to the global level as in climate change models, but includes local and regional models of environmental problems. This paper discusses various definitions of IAM and identifies five different types of integration that Lire needed for the effective solution of environmental problems. The future is then depicted in the form of two brief scenarios: one optimistic and one pessimistic. The current state of IAM is then briefly reviewed. The issues of complexity and validation in IAM are recognised as more complex than in traditional disciplinary approaches. Communication is identified as a central issue both internally among team members and externally with decision-makers. stakeholders and other scientists. Finally it is concluded that the process of integrated assessment and modelling is considered as important as the product for any particular project. By learning to work together and recognise the contribution of all team members and participants, it is believed that we will have a strong scientific and social basis to address the environmental problems of the 21st Century.

  • Lymphocyte CC chemokine receptor 9 and epithelial thymus-expressed chemokine (TECK) expression distinguish the small intestinal immune compartment: Epithelial expression of tissue-specific chemokines as an organizing principle in regional immunity
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Medicine. - 1540-9538. ; 192:5, s. 761-768
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The immune system has evolved specialized cellular and molecular mechanisms for targeting and regulating immune responses at epithelial surfaces. Here we show that small intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes and lamina propria lymphocytes migrate to thymus-expressed chemokine (TECK). This attraction is mediated by CC chemokine receptor (CCR)9, a chemoattractant receptor expressed at high levels by essentially all CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes in the small intestine. Only a small subset of lymphocytes in the colon are CCR9(+), and lymphocytes from other tissues including tonsils, lung, inflamed liver, normal or inflamed skin, inflamed synovium and synovial fluid, breast milk, and seminal fluid are universally CCR9(-). TECK expression is also restricted to the small intestine: immunohistochemistry reveals that intense anti-TECK reactivity characterizes crypt epithelium in the jejunum and ileum, but not in other epithelia of the digestive tract (including stomach and colon), skin, lung, or salivary gland. These results imply a restricted role for lymphocyte CCR9 and its ligand TECK in the small intestine, and provide the first evidence for distinctive mechanisms of lymphocyte recruitment that may permit functional specialization of immune responses in different segments of the gastrointestinal tract. Selective expression of chemokines by differentiated epithelium may represent an important mechanism for targeting and specialization of immune responses.

  • Picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman probing of the light-switch states of Ru(Phen)(2)dppz (2+)
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 105:50, s. 12653-12664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman (picosecond-TR3) spectroscopy has been used to conduct an extensive photophysical characterization of the light- switch complex [Ru(phen)(2)dppz](2+) as a function of environment, in which studies have been carried out in aqueous and nonaqueous media and in DNA. The results are considered in rotation to a previous report describing environment-sensitive lowest triplet MLCT states. Vibrational marker features and enhancement patterns were used to determine the rapid progression (< 20 ps) between two triplet MLCT states in aqueous environment, followed by subnanosecond, nonradiative deactivation to the ground state. In nonaqueous environment, the long-lived, emissive triplet MLCT state is spectrally identified as the short-lived first triplet MLCT state observed in water, in agreement with the earlier proposed mechanism. The present data are shown to correlate well with previous nanosecond RR findings for the complex in each environment. Interestingly, a precursor state has been identified upon excitation in both nonaqueous solvent and in DNA, which precedes the triplet MLCT state, and the lifetime of which appears to be environment dependent. Observation of this state is discussed in relation to other recent femtosecond spectroscopic studies on this complex.

  • Socioeconomic status, marital status and hip fracture risk : a population-based case-control study
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 11:9, s. 803-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Socioeconomic status and social support have been identified as important determinants of several diseases and overall mortality, but these factors have not been adequately examined in relation to hip fracture risk. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of socioeconomic status and marital status to hip fracture risk. We used data from a population-based case-control study in postmenopausal women aged 50-81 years during 1993-1995 who resided in six counties in Sweden. The analysis was based on 1327 incident cases of hip fracture and 3262 randomly selected controls. Socioeconomic and marital status were obtained by record linkage with census data in 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990. Information on other possible risk factors for hip fracture was collected by a mailed questionnaire. Women who were gainfully employed in 1990 had an odds ratio (OR) of 0.74 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.56-0.96] compared with those not gainfully employed; those in the highest tertile of household income had an OR of 0.74 (95% CI 0.60-0.90) compared with those in the lowest tertile of income. Women who lived in a one-family house had an OR of 0.85 (95% CI 0.72-0.99) compared with those living in an apartment. Divorced, widowed or unmarried women had a higher risk of hip fracture than married or cohabiting women; the OR was 1.40 (95% CI 1.06-1.85). Married women who were both gainfully employed and were living in a one-family house had a substantially decreased risk of hip fracture compared with unemployed women living without a partner in an apartment (OR 0.39; 95% CI 0.22-0.71). Occupational affiliation among women ever employed, and educational level, were not associated with hip fracture risk. We conclude that employment, household income, type of housing and marital status seem to be risk indicators of hip fracture risk independent of known osteoporotic risk factors.

  • The COPE index - A first stage assessment of negative impact, positive value and quality of support of caregiving in informal carers of older people
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 7:1, s. 39-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data was collected in five countries from informal carers of older people (n=577) via a common protocol. Carers completed: (1) a 17-item version of the Carers of Older People in Europe (COPE) Index, an assessment of carers' perceptions of their role, (2) a questionnaire on demographic and caregiving circumstances, and (3) three instruments included for the criterion validation of the COPE Index (the General Health Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF). Principal Component Analysis of the COPE Index was followed by internal consistency analysis of emergent components. Scales derived by summing items loading on the components were analyzed for their association with the criterion measures. Two components, negative impact and positive value, emerged consistently across countries. A third component, quality of support was less consistent across countries. Scales derived from the negative impact and positive value components were internally consistent and significantly associated with the criterion validity measures. These two scales and four items drawn from the quality of support component were retained in the final COPE Index. While further testing is required, the COPE Index has current utility in increasing understanding of the role perceptions of carers of older people.
