  • Production of an esterase from Fusarium oxysporum catalysing transesterification reactions in organic solvents
  • 1998
  • In: Process Biochemistry. - 1359-5113 .- 1873-3298. ; 33:7, s. 729-733
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The production of an esterase by Fusarium oxysporum, grown on tomato skins as the sole carbon source, was studied in submerged and solid state cultures. Under optimum growth conditions, enzyme yields as high as 7·3 U/ml of culture medium and 19·4 U/g of carbon source were obtained. The esterase catalysed the synthesis of esters in organic solvents. Geraniol was transacetylated in hexane by the esterase using triacetyl as an acetyl donor. The geranyl acetate yield was 68%.

  • Identification of excited states in doubly odd [Formula Presented]Sb : Smooth band termination
  • 1997
  • In: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 55:5, s. 2127-2131
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Excited states in [Formula Presented]Sb have been identified for the first time in a series of [Formula Presented]-spectroscopy experiments using both thin and backed targets, including neutron-fold and recoil-mass measurements to provide unambiguous channel identification. The three decoupled intruder bands observed in [Formula Presented]Sb are based upon configurations involving 2p-2h excitations across the [Formula Presented] shell gap and show the features of smooth band termination. The yrast intruder band, which has been connected to the low-spin levels, is tentatively identified up to its predicted termination at [Formula Presented]. Excellent agreement with configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations is obtained for the high-spin states near termination.

  • Lack of evidence for an immunosuppressive role for MUC1.
  • 1999
  • In: Cancer immunology, immunotherapy : CII. - 0340-7004. ; 48:1, s. 22-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The in vitro anti-proliferative properties of various supernatants from MUC1-expressing cell lines and of purified preparations of MUC1 were evaluated. We have observed that supernatants from the MUC1-and MUC3-positive cell line T47D, but not from the MUC1- and MUC4-positive cell line MCF7, were able to inhibit proliferation of cells from various haematopoietic cell lines. Although the activity of T47D supernatants could be abrogated by immunodepletion of MUC1, immunopurified MUC1 from T47D was unable to inhibit cell proliferation. Significantly, supernatants from mouse 3T3 cells transfected with a secreted form of MUC1 or from BHK-21 cells infected with a recombinant vaccinia virus coding for the secreted form of MUC1, as well as preparations of purified MUC1 from bile or urine, were likewise unable to inhibit T cell proliferation. Surprisingly, a crude mixture of bile mucins had a suppressive effect on T cell growth. Our results suggest that other molecules, such as amino sugars or other mucins, which can associate with MUC1, are likely to be responsible for the observed anti-proliferative effects of T47D cells.

  • High-spin States in the A=39 Mirror Nuclei 39Ca and 39K
  • 1999
  • In: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - 1434-6001. ; 6, s. 5-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-spin states of the mass A = 39 mirror pair K-39 and Ca-39 were investigated via the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28+O-16 at 125 MeV beam energy. The GAMMASPHERE array in conjunction with the 4 pi charged-particle detector array MICROBALL and neutron detectors was used to detect gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The results of the first high-spin study of the T-z = -1/2 nucleus Ca-39 are discussed in terms of mirror symmetry and compared to spherical shell-model calculations in the 1d(3/2)-1f(7/2) configuration space.

  • Controlling simultaneous production of endoglucanase and beta-glucosidase by Fusarium oxysporum in submerged culture
  • 1995
  • In: Biotechnology letters. - 0141-5492 .- 1573-6776. ; 17:8, s. 883-888
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The simultaneous production of endoglucanase and β-glucosidase by Fusarium oxysporum was investigated in submerged culture. Consecutive optimization of growth conditions resulted in the correction of large activity differences, observed during production of enzymes, and substantially enhanced low enzyme yields. At optimum growth conditions yields as high as 1650 and 232 U per g of carbon source of endoglucanase and β-glucosidase were obtained respectively competing favourably with those reported for microorganisms grown on the same carbon source. The most important kinetic characteristics of the enzymes were the high temperature optima of endoglucanase (60°C) and β-glucosidase (65°C) and the exceptionally high thermostability of endoglucanase. The latter enzyme retained 50% of the activity at pH 5.0 after approximately 6.5 h at 70°C

  • Prevalence studies of GB virus-C infection using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction
  • 1996
  • In: Journal of Medical Virology. - 1096-9071. ; 50:1, s. 97-103
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Among the three recently described GB viruses (GBV-A, GBV-B, and GBV-C), only GBV-C has been linked to cryptogenic hepatitis in man. Because of the limited utility of currently available research tests to determine antibody response to GBV-C proteins, the prevalence of GBV-C RNA in human sera was studied using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The prevalence of GBV-C is higher among volunteer blood donors with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels (3.9%) than among volunteer blood donors with normal ALT levels (0.8%). Higher rates were also noted among commercial blood donors (12.9%) and intravenous drug users (16.0%). GBV-C was frequently detected in residents of West Africa, where the prevalence was > 10% in most age groups. Approximately 20% of patients diagnosed with either acute or chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) were found to be positive for GBV-C RNA. In addition, GBV-C RNA sequences were detected in individuals diagnosed with non-A-E hepatitis, with clinical courses ranging from mild disease to fulminant hepatitis. Fourteen of sixteen subjects with or without clinically apparent hepatitis were positive for GBV-C RNA more than 1 year after the initial positive result.

  • Band termination spectroscopy in 157Er
  • 1995
  • In: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - 0954-3899. ; 21:2, s. 193-213
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The level scheme of 157Er has been extended from a spin region where the nucleus behaves as a prolate rotor to a region where the spin is produced by the alignment of all or most of the available valence nucleons along the symmetry axis of a weakly deformed oblate shape. The level scheme was established at high spin using up to four-fold gamma -ray coincidences detected in the Eurogam spectrometer following the reaction 114Cd( 48Ca,5n)157Er at a bombarding energy of 210 MeV. Particularly favoured states have been established at IK=69/2+, 81/2+, 71/2+, 77/2-, 87-/2 and 89-/2. Specific single-particle configurations are assigned to these special states by comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. These states are related to structures observed in the neighbouring nuclei 158Er and 157Ho. These data provide the spectrum of single-particle states for the lowest lying valence orbitals above the 146Gd closed core.
