  • Intestinal colonization with Enterobacteriaceae in Pakistani and Swedish hospital-delivered infants.
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Acta paediatrica Scandinavica. - 0001-656X. ; 80:6-7, s. 602-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rectal cultures from Swedish and Pakistani hospital-delivered newborn infants were analysed regarding the early acquisition of enterobacteria. Swedish infants were delivered vaginally, Pakistani infants were delivered either vaginally or by caesarean section. The Swedish infants were all breast-fed, whereas breastfeeding was incomplete and often started late among the Pakistani infants. Both groups of Pakistani infants were more rapidly colonized with enterobacteria than were the Swedish infants. Cultures from Swedish infants seldom yielded more than one kind of enterobacteria; E. coli and Klebsiella were most frequently isolated. E. coli dominated in both Pakistani groups, but especially caesarean section delivered infants were in addition often colonized with Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter or Citrobacter species. Breastfeeding from the first day of life reduced colonization with Klebsiella/Enterobacter/Citrobacter. The results suggest that environmental exposure, delivery mode and early feeding habits all influence the early intestinal colonization with enterobacteria.

  • Class II antigen expression by lacrimal epithelial cells. An updated working hypothesis for antigen presentation by epithelial cells
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. - 0146-0404 .- 1552-5783. ; 32:8, s. 2302-2310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been suggested that aberrant expression of Class II histocompatibility antigens (HLA) is involvedin T cell activation and leads to autoimmunity. Although Class II antigen expression was foundin various nonlymphoid tissues, including salivary glands, its expression on lacrimal epithelial cells hasnot been reported. In this study, 12 cadaver lacrimal glands were analyzed for HLA-DR and for thenumbers and distributions of T suppressor cells (Ts), T helper cells (Th), B cells, and macrophages.None of these cases exhibited the high numbers of inflammatory cells, tissue damage, and fibrosischaracteristic of Sjogren's syndrome. The HLA-DR-positive epithelial cells were detected in ten cases;they represented from less than 1% to more than 70% of the epithelial cells. In these ten positive cases, there were greater numbers of T cells per millimeter squared (229 ± 94 [mean ± the standard error ofthe mean]) than in the two HLA-DR-negative cases (37 ± 1 [mean ± range]). Three lacrimal glandspecimens tested were negative for immunoglobulin (Ig) G-bearing B cells, and two of the three specimenstested had IgA-bearing cells. Acinar cells were isolated from rat and rabbit lacrimal glands andcultured overnight in serum-free media supplemented with several potential mediators of Class IIantigen expression: interferon-7, carbachol, or isoproterenol. Freshly isolated cells did not expressClass II antigens at detectable levels, but in most experiments, they began to express the antigen evenin the absence of putative mediators. In light of results from recent studies of antigen presentation andepithelial cell membrane dynamics, these findings suggest a hypothesis in which Class II antigen-expressingepithelial cells present antigenic peptides that are generated in the intracellular compartmentsin communication with the basal-lateral membrane assembly and recycling pathway.

  • Computer Aided Participatory Planning
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems II. ; , s. 69-76
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A computer aided action research method for design of work places is presented. A project group of researchers, managers, union representatives, supervisors, shop-floor workers and representatives from the health-and-safety department analyse different aspects of the physical and organizational work environment. Factory layouts and the flow of raw materials and goods, truck routes and overhead crane movements are shown on a computer screen by means of simulation and animation techniques. Field studies at four companies strongly suggest that the animation helps the members in the project group to develop a common language and to better comprehend what a future factory design and work organization would look like.

  • Computer Aided Planning of Production and Working Environment
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Organizational Design and Management -IV. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. ; , s. 499-504, s. 499-504
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Success of design projects depends on their quality from a technical and economic point of view and on the quality of their implementation and use. This paper discusses a computer aided planning (CAP) technique and its applicability and quality in both these respects. One version of the CAP-technique is developed for planning of industrial working environments and another version for planning of residential and working environments for physically handicapped.

  • Report of the heavy flavors working group
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 17:10, s. 1605-1623
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • After a brief discussion of the statistics available to the four LEP experiments at the time of writing and an overview of B-event characteristics, the authors consider in particular the theory, practice and potential pitfalls of neural networks, a new approach to B tagging which attracted a great deal of interest. They then consider some of the QCD aspects of heavy flavour physics. Finally there is a brief discussion of the prospects for heavy flavour physics at HERA.
