  • Spin yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep inelastic reactions
  • 1999
  • In: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 60:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The potential for using deep inelastic reactions to populate high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei is studied in a series of experiments using GAMMASPHERE for gamma-ray detection and a silicon strip detector for measuring the angles of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. In three experiments 61 new transitions up to a maximum spin of 22 (h) over bar in 12 neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei were found. We observe that gamma-ray yields as a function of spin are flatter for all neutron transfer products than for inelastic excitation of either the projectile or target nucleus. Calculations are presented which indicate that this difference cannot be accounted for by quasielastic processes, but more likely are the result of larger energy loss processes, such as deep inelastic reactions. • One‐dimensional non‐linear inversion of magnetotelluric data : the importance of data errorrs
  • 1995
  • In: Geophysical Prospecting. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0016-8025 .- 1365-2478. ; 43:7, s. 905-918
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Inversion of noisy magnetotelluric data over a horizontally stratified earth has no unique solution. Instead, the resistivities and thicknesses of the layers can only be specified to lie within certain bounds at a particular confidence level. The significance of having correctly estimated data errors when calculating the parameters and parameter bounds is discussed. Emphasis is put on the very corrunon problem of not being able to obtain models which can be considered acceptable with a reasonable certainty from a statistical point of view. A method is presented to obtain a pragmatic data error description by adjustment of wrongly estimated data errors while keeping the suppression of 1D data features at a minimum. A comparison is made between calculation of the parameter bounds based on approximating the confidence surface by hyperellipsoids and a calculation based on a full non‐linear most‐squares analysis. In general it is found that the approximation works very well when the confidence limit is small. However, significant deviations are found in some cases.

  • Comment on "Role played by N and N-N impurities in type-IV semiconductors"
  • 1995
  • In: Physical Review B Condensed Matter. - 0163-1829 .- 1095-3795. ; 51:20, s. 14756-14757
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 48, 17 806 (1993)] Cunha, Canuto, and Fazzio reported ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations on nitrogen impurities in group-IV semiconductors. In their paper it is suggested that nitrogen pairs form from substitutional atoms on adjacent lattice sites. However, the experimentally observed configuration in silicon and germanium is different from this. The aim of this Comment is to clarify the situation of the nitrogen pair in these materials.
