    • This study examined the utility of the TELE, a telephone assessment for dementia, in a sample of 269 individuals that was not selected on the basis of previous dementia diagnosis. Thus, the conditions of the study reflect the actual situation in which a screening instrument might be employed. Scores on TELE were compared to dementia diagnoses. Using the best cutoff score, sensitivity was .86 and specificity was .90. Longitudinal follow-up established that false positives primarily included those who subsequently developed dementia. Telephone screening for dementia has both clinical and research applications. One recommendation based on our experience is that longitudinal studies should include a telephone interview component for anyone who drops out of the study, to enable characterizing the cognitive status of dropouts.

    • The Charadrii (shorebirds, gulls and alcids) are one of the most diverse avian groups from the point of view of sexual size dimorphism, exhibiting extremes in both male-biased and female-biased dimorphism, as well as monomorphism. In this study we use phylogenetic comparative analyses to investigate how size dimorphism has changed over evolutionary time, distinguishing between changes that have occurred in females and in males. Independent contrasts analyses show that both body mass and wing length have been more variable in males than in females. Directional analyses show that male-biased dimorphism has increased after inferred transitions towards more polygynous mating systems. There have been analogous increases in female-biased dimorphism after transitions towards more socially polyandrous mating systems. Changes in dimorphism in both directions are attributable to male body size changing more than female body size. We suggest that this might be because females are under stronger natural selection constraints related to fecundity. Taken together, our results suggest that the observed variation in dimorphism of Charadrii can be best explained by male body size responding more sensitively to variable sexual selection than female body size

    • The aim of the present study was to compare concentrations of cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and a metalloproteinase inhibitor (TIMP-1) in gingival crevicular fluids (GCF) from sites with gingival inflammation in 28 young patients with Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS), and in age- and gender-matched controls. Each group consisted of 17 females and 11 males with a mean age of 11.0 years (range 4-22 years). In both groups, anterior upper sites with a clinical diagnosis of gingival inflammation and with pockets < or = 3 mm were selected for sampling of GCF, which was carried out with filter disks inserted into the gingival crevice until saturated. The concentrations of cytokines (IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and IL-8), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-8, and MMP-9), and their tissue inhibitor (TIMP-1) were analysed using commercial ELISA kits. Significantly higher levels of IL-1beta (P < 0.001) and MMP-8 (P < 0.05) were disclosed among the PLS patients compared with their controls, while the opposite was found for IL-8 (P < 0.05) and MMP-1 (P < 0.001). The individual variations were considerable in both groups. When comparing the expression of cytokines, MMPs, and TIMP-1 in PLS patients with clinically active and non-active periodontitis, the non-active PLS patients showed significantly higher values of IL-1beta than the patients with active periodontal disease (ANOVA, P < 0.01). In conclusion, this study was unable to demonstrate a clear-cut pathognomonic expression of cytokines or MMPs in patients with PLS, but further studies on cytokine and MMP output are warranted.

  • Mutual Mate Choice in the Deep Snouted Pipefish Syngnathus typhle

    • This thesis integrates the fields of sexual selection, parental investment and sex role theory by investigating mutual mate choice and mate competition in the sex role reversed deep snouted pipefish Syngnathus typhle (Pisces: Syngnathidae) through a series of laboratory experiments. In S. typhle, the female transfers her eggs to the male's brood pouch where they are nourished and oxygenated for about a month, when the male gives birth to the independent fry.Mate choice was found to be adaptive. Both sexes benefited from mating with preferred partners in terms of increased offspring viability and got larger, or faster growing, offspring when mating with large fish. Females were also shown to prefer males with thicker brood pouches. Thus, females, the more competitive sex, had multiple preferences. Both male and female choice behaviour was found to be flexible and influenced by available information on partner quality. In addition, males, but not females, copied the mate choice of consexuals. Both sexes were found to take their own quality in relation to surrounding competitors into account when deciding whether to display to potential partners. Male-male competition was found to influence both the mate choice of males and, potentially, overrule the mate choice of females. Males did not compete as intensely as females, nor did they use their sexual ornament in this context as females do. Rather, the ornament was used in interactions with females, and males that displayed more received more eggs.The findings in this thesis emphasise the importance of not viewing mate choice and competition as opposite behaviours, but rather to apply a dynamic approach in mate choice studies, integrating choice and competition in both sex
