- Beginning with past observations of the portrayal of GDR history in East and West before 1989, the text presents the new questions and changing conditions of the study of GDR history since the reunification. In this manner, keywords from the present discussions, such as ‘methodology argument’, ‘totalitarianism theory’ and ‘dictator concept’ are revealed. The possibilities for a re-assessment of GDR history are also discussed, and the movement towards viewing it as a separate entity within the larger context of German history is supported. Re search into the mentality of the GDR is proposed as a possible method of achieving a better understanding of its history.
