  • Magnetoelectric composites of nickel ferrite and lead zirconnate titanate prepared by spark plasma sintering
  • 2007
  • In: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 27:1, s. 279-284
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Magnetoelectric (ME) bulk composites of ferrite and lead zirconnate titanate (PZT) were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) of mechanically mixed ferrites. BaFe2O4 or NiFe2O4 and a soft lead zirconnate titanate, PZT-5A, powders. The feasibility of retarding possible reactions occurring between the ferrite and lead zirconnate titanate was approved by applying such a dynamic process as SPS. It was further revealed that nickel ferrite and PZT-5A is a more favorable combination that underwent no obvious reactions up to 1050 degrees C. Efforts were made to optimize the SPS processing parameters in order to produce immiscible composites with high electrical resistivity, low dielectric loss and better magnetoelectric response.

  • Shortened Polarization Beam Splitters With Two Cascaded Multimode Interference Sections
  • 2009
  • In: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 21:20, s. 1538-1540
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This letter presents a design for shortening the length of a polarization beam splitter (PBS) by using two cascaded multimode interference (MMI) sections with different widths. By optimizing the MMI parameters, a short PBS of good performance is achieved. The total length of the PBS is reduced to about 1/28 of that of a conventional design.

  • A model of the 3D circulation, salinity distribution, and transport pattern in the pearl river estuary, China
  • 2005
  • In: Journal of Coastal Research. - 0749-0208. ; 21:5, s. 896-908
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The three-dimensional circulation, salinity distribution, and overall transport pattern were simulated in the Pearl River Estuary, China, using a modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM). The circulation in the estuary is mainly driven by tide, wind, and river runoff in a complex manner, where the relative importance of the different forcing factors varies over the year. Field data on currents from several locations in the estuary taken at different elevations through the water column were employed to validate the model together with measurements of the salinity distribution in the surface layer. Also, satellite images were utilized to qualitatively confirm the simulated overall transport pattern. Comparisons between measurements and calculations showed that the POM yielded satisfactory predictions without any particular calibration. However, for some events the coastal current outside the estuary induced by the large-scale circulation in the South China Sea affected the flow in the estuary, making it necessary to employ a more sophisticated boundary condition on the ocean side than what was initially implemented. The long-term objective of the numerical modeling of the flow and material transport in the Pearl River Estuary is to utilize the validated model for forecasting the circulation and water quality in the estuary in a comprehensive system where in-situ measurements and remote sensing are the other main components.

  • Synthesis and characterization of two novel high valent dinuclear complexes with a triphenolate ligand bearing functional groups
  • 2005
  • In: Chinese Chemical Letters. - 1001-8417 .- 1878-5964. ; 16:1, s. 89-92
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two novel high valent complexes [M-2(III, III)L(mu-OAc)(2)](PF6)-P-. (M=Mn, Fe; 9) were prepared, where L was the tri-anion of 2,6-bis{[(2-hydroxy-3-(morpholin-4-yl methyl)-5-tertbutyl benzyl)(pyridyl-2-methyl)amino]methyl}-4-methyl phenol which contained additional phenolic, tert-butyl and morpholin-4-yl methyl groups compared to its parent [Mn-2(II, II)(bpmp) (mu-OAc)(2)](CIO4)-C-. (10). These improvements decreased the difference between the new model and (Mn)(4) cluster (OEC in nature).

  • Studies of a series of novel rhenium(I) bipyridyl dyes for solar cells
  • 2005
  • In: Chinese Chemical Letters. - 1001-8417 .- 1878-5964. ; 16:5, s. 677-680
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A series of novel rhenium(I) 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes [fac-Re(4,4'-di-COOEt-bpy)-(CO)(3)(Xpy)PF6], where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, py is pyridine and X is 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy, or 3-amino, were synthesized, their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied. The Re(II/I) oxidation potentials decreased as the X group becomes more electron donating from H to 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy, or 3-amino, which might be a very convenient ways for adjusting the electron transfer driving force.
