  • Going hybrid on a dime : Lessons from schooling during the pandemic and implications for sustainable quality in education
  • 2021
  • In: ICERI2021 Proceedings. - : IATED. - 9788409345496 ; , s. 4503-4512
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    •  It is speculated that the Covid- 19 Pandemic has changed the future of work emphasizing hybrid solutions and networking. Understanding how distance education or hybrid models can be sustainable at the K-12 level is therefore of relevance to better prepare youth for a future world of work and sustainable development. The purpose of this paper is to present findings from phase two of the qualitative case study to examine more in-depth the ways in which a private school adapted it’s educational programming using technology-supported systems to innovate and maintain attractive quality education. Data were gathered from interviews, focus groups and video footage. The Digital Culture model was used as an analytical framework to examine the data from four dimension: pedagogy, communication, organizational systems, and technology.

  • Insights from the Pandemic about how to lead and develop sustainable quality in organizations
  • 2021
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, a qualitative case study is presented of how a private school in Florida, USA developed innovative responses to the Covid-19 pandemic, while maintaining and sustaining quality, within the school and in relation to global sustainable development goals. The analysis examines the school’s leadership, and how strategic decision making, shared leadership, teaming and collaboration, and the school’s core values and organizational culture were used to adapt and respond to the crisis. Findings from this case study provide insights to better understand how leaders can develop adaptive systems, built on quality management principles, and to foster sustainable practices that are value-based and customer oriented within the Quality 5.0 era. The paper connects to the track’s focus to illustrate and discuss how quality management practices can be used to support sustainable development on the organizational level through adaptability and innovation.

  • Building Sustainable Systems for Schooling in Turbulent Times : Big ideas from the sciences

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the importance for school leaders to create strong internal systems of work that are interdependent and interconnected around a common purpose and set of values to be responsive to changing conditions including crises. Based on six lessons from the sciences drawing from systems theory, chaos and complexity and network theory, we illustrate how educational leaders can ignite energy for reimagining and reshaping schools no matter the turbulent times.  The sustainability of schooling as a public or private service depends on how well networks are built that become complex adaptive systems of learning for a school’s development. The future of schooling depends on bold leadership that embraces systems-thinking, living on the edge of chaos, and network-thinking to become adaptive no matter the crisis.

  • The human networked organization : toward contemporary quality management and sustainability
  • 2021
  • In: Accelerating the progress towards the 2030 SDGs in times of crisis. - Östersund : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789189341173 ; , s. 1997-2016
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, we examine the role of networking as a management strategy for organizational development to help leaders create sustainable practices that invite adaptability and responsiveness to emerging internal and external needs. Networking has been identified as one of the ingredients in contemporary organizational development as part of the emergence paradigm in quality management. Yet little research exists on how networks can be used within organisations to strengthen the infrastructure toward agility and sustainable development. We are interested in exploring how leaders can use and develop networks as a management strategy within an organization to foster agile, resilient, responsive sustainable infrastructures as part of the UN Sustainability Goal #9. In our research we coined the term, “Human Networked Organization” to suggest a new organizational prototype to promote sustainable organizational development that occurs when leaders systematically structure the functions of work in a network system, which includes values and culture. This prototype is the result of an ethnographic study of a private school in Tampa, Florida, USA. Data were collected systematically from 2016-2018 through observations, focus groups, informal conversations, document analysis, and a process-map to examine how the leadership team and teaching staff worked. Data were analysed based on social network analysis to examine, understand and illustrate the complex fabric oflife in the school. Findings from this study contribute to the conference track focus on understanding the connections between quality management and sustainable development at the organizational level, and the UN Sustainability Goal #9.

  • Person-centred Health Care Resting on Digitization and Systematic Processes : A position paper
  • 2021
  • In: GLOBAL HEALTH 2021 The Tenth International Conference on Global Health Challenges, International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA), 2021. - : International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA). - 9781612088921
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This position paper argues for further research within person-centered healthcare using digitization and systematic process within the fields of information systems and quality management. The included state of art shows the existence of both digital applications and innovation, whereas there is lack of knowledge on how to engage users, especially when it comes to older citizens. Besides the digital application, we should focus on developing related systematic processes to increase both organizational value and patient value.      Understanding user-design and development are necessary prerequisites to engage in digitalization and is also key to transformation in health care.

  • The Rainbow Runners : A Sleddog Adventure
  • 2021. - 1
  • Book (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • The Rainbow Runners is a true story of a sled dog adventure told by Alaskan Husky, Nija JaJa, the youngest member of the team, who along with her “Uncle Buncles” and brother set out to follow a dream to participate in a long-distance race through the mountains.   The story takes place in the white-capped mountains of Sweden. The book begins with a dream to prepare for a 250-kilometer long distance sled dog race through the Swedish Mountains. With fewer dogs in the team than is common for such a race, the team begins their journey with an uphill battle. During preparations for the race the dogs experience what it means to build a team, and not just a functioning team, but a team that is flexible and adaptable to changing conditions; a team that is built on recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths in each team member; and a team that keeps sight on their own dream, even when others doubt their ability.Among the issues focused on in the book are teambuilding, vision, goal setting and strategic planning, diversity, and leadership.
