  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Stockholm, in just a few decades, was transformed from a largely medieval fortress town to a modern capital city. The street regulation which was carried out in Stockholm during the years 1625-1650 and which in the central parts of the city still exist as a recognizable pattern for streets and city blocks was an important part of this transformation. The realization of the street regulation was one component of the plans to allow Stockholm to bloom into a representativ capital city for the expanding great power. The purpose of the investigation is to examine how the large street regulations in Stockholm were carried out and their consequences for the city and for its inhabitants. This process of transformation has been the subject of this thesis, and it has been discussed from two perspectives - that of aesthetics and that of politics. The first perspective is the Renaissance aesthetic conception of regularity in city planning as the best pattern for creating a sense of order. The second perspective treats the distribution of initiatives and activities in relation to the transformation of a capital city. The street regulation in and of itself did not bring about the considerable problems of readjustment which are usually presented in the literature. However, the street regulation did lay ground for a new pattern of streets and city blocks, which enabled the restructuring of the population which took place during the succeding decades. The street regulation should therefore in the first hand be seen as an attempt to create "regularity", the striving of the time to achieve order on all planes of society. Through this process the government wanted to achieve control over the wild and disorderly construction in the area outside the city center och thereby, also over those who lived there. The regulation was in that sense the expression of a strong central authority. That it could be carried out demonstrates the strength that the central power had achieved through the administrative reforms of Gustav Adolf and Axel Oxenstierna. The city plan which was executed gave Stockholm a shape that also enabled its expansion. The streets could be extended and generate new blocks which might house the growing population. This city plan provided space for the major share of the construction that took place during the following two centuries, intil the middle of the 19th century.
