  • On the effects of image quality degradation on minutiae- and ridge-based automatic fingerprint recognition
  • 2005
  • In: Proceedings. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 9780780392458 ; , s. 79-82
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The effect of image quality degradation on the verification performance of automatic fingerprint recognition is investigated. We study the performance of two fingerprint matchers based on minutiae and ridge information under varying fingerprint image quality. The ridge-based system is found to be more robust to image quality degradation than the minutiae-based system for a number of different image quality criteria. © 2005 IEEE.

  • Convex incentives in financial markets: an agent-based analysis
  • 2017
  • In: Decisions in Economics and Finance. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1593-8883 .- 1129-6569. ; 40:1-2, s. 375-395
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • © 2017, Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l. We investigate whether convex incentive contracts are a source of instability of financial markets as indicated by the results of a continuous double-auction asset market experiment performed by Holmen et al. (J Econ Dyn Control 40:179–194, 2014). We develop a model to replicate the setting of the experiment and perform an agent-based simulation where agents have linear or convex incentives. Extending the simulation by varying features of actual asset markets that were not studied in the experiment, our main results show that increasing the number of convex incentive contracts increases prices and volatility and decreases market liquidity, measured both as bid–ask spreads and volumes. We also observe that the influence of risk aversion on traders’ decisions decreases when there are convex contracts and that increasing the differences in initial wealth among the traders has similar effects as increasing number of convex incentive contracts.

  • Results from a cognitive group rehabilitation programme from an occupational performance perspective
  • 2016
  • In: British Journal of Occupational Therapy. - London : Sage Publications. - 0308-0226 .- 1477-6006. ; 79:12, s. 734-741
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Introduction: The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was used for treatment planning and to evaluate the effect of a cognitive group rehabilitation programme. The aim was to identify occupational performance problems defined as important and to analyse the outcome, and to link those problems to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set for traumatic brain injury and stroke.Method: A retrospective design was used, including an analysis of COPM data recorded before and two months after the programme. COPM data from 124 clients were linked to the ICF core sets. Results: A clinically important difference of 2 COPM scores was reached in 32% of the clients for occupational performance and in 47% for satisfaction with occupational performance. A majority of the problems identified (62%) were classified within the activities and participation component in the ICF, and 38% in body functions. All occupational performance problems could be linked to the ICF; just one of the 36 categories (caring for household objects) was not found in any of the ICF core sets. Conclusion: By linking the COPM data to the core sets, occupational therapists can be confident in addressing the typical problems of the group of clients identified.

  • Propeller Open Water Characteristics in Waves
  • 2022
  • In: Proceedings of the 24th Numerical Towing Tank Symposium, NuTTS 2022. ; , s. 36-41
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The propulsion factors for ships when operating in waves deviate from those in calm water (Gerritsma et al. (1961), Moor and Murdey (1970) and Nakamura and Naito (1975)). Propeller-hull interaction effects are also different in waves compared to calm water. In order to map the differences in an ongoing research, the performance of a tanker ship in calm water and in regular head waves is being studied through the following steps:  1. bare hull performance in terms of resistance, motions and nominal wake in a range of operational conditions,  2. isolated effects of waves on performance degradation of the open water propeller,  3. propeller-hull interaction effects in self-propulsion. The main objective of this paper is to study the propeller open water (POW) performance in waves and compare it with calm water condition, representing step 2. To this end, a series of POW model tests are carried out in a towing tank for a range of regular head wave conditions. The propeller submergence is chosen to avoid propeller ventilation, while still being affected by the encountered waves. The tests are carried out for a series of advance ratios and wave steepnesses. The desired advance ratios are obtained by keeping the carriage speed constant and adjusting the propeller rotational speed. Numerical computations are also carried out for the same conditions using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver and validated against the model tests. The propeller characteristics including its thrust, torque and efficiency are studied. This paper presents the progress of the research and may be subjected to significant revisions.
