  • The surface oxidation of pyrite in alkaline solution
  • 1990
  • In: Journal of Applied Electrochemistry. - 0021-891X .- 1572-8838. ; 20:6, s. 1033-1039
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The collector-less flotation of pyrite has been studied by conventional techniques and is correlated to the electrochemical behaviour of pyrite in alkaline solution (1m NaClO4, pH 11). It was concluded that the initial oxidation of pyrite produces a hydrophobic sulphur rich surface together with hydrophilic iron hydroxide species. Also upon grinding, the surface is covered by hydrophilic species and therefore no significant flotation was obtained in the absence of a collector. However, collectorless flotation was readily obtained in an iron complexing solution like EDTA. This indicates that the remaining sulphur-rich layer is responsible for the floatability of pyrite under these conditions.

  • Juxtaposition of N-myc and Ig kappa through a reciprocal t(6;12) translocation in a mouse plasmacytoma
  • 1994
  • In: Genes, Chromosomes and Cancer. - 1045-2257. ; 11:2, s. 85-90
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Nearly all mouse plasmacytomas (MPCs) carry an Ig/myc translocation. Any one of the three Ig loci may participate, while the myc contribution has been limited to c-myc, excluding other members of the myc gene family. The same is true for the other two known Ig/myc translocation-carrying tumors, Burkitt's lymphoma and rat immunocytoma. It is believed that the Ig/myc juxtaposition plays a decisive, rate limiting role in the genesis of the three tumors, acting through the constitutive activation of myc that makes it refractory to normal regulation. Here we describe the molecular analysis of a unique t(6;12)(CI;B) translocation that we previously identified in an exceptional MPC that expressed N-myc but not c-myc. We now show that the translocation led to the juxtaposition of N-myc and Ig kappa. This is the first case of an Ig/myc-carrying tumor that involves N-myc rather than c-myc. These findings suggest that the translocation may already have occurred at the pro- or pre-B cell stage at which N-myc is open for transcription. According to this interpretation, constitutive activation of N-myc would suppress the expression of c-myc, but would not interfere with the differentiation of the pro-B cell into a fully mature plasma cell. Its tumorigenic influence would become manifest only at the time when the cell would normally be programmed to leave the cycling compartment, in connection with its terminal differentiation.

  • Natural Lifetimes of Excited-states of Neutral Nitrogen Determined By Time-resolved Laser Spectroscopy
  • 1992
  • In: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 45:5, s. 2712-2715
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Radiative lifetimes were determined for three quartet states of neutral nitrogen, and sequences of Rydberg states were studied using depletion spectroscopy. Free nitrogen atoms were generated by photodissociation of N2O using frequency-tripled dye-laser radiation that was two-photon resonant with the 2p(2)3p 4S or 4D states. Further quartet states were reached by a subsequent single-photon absorption. We obtain tau(2p(2)3p 4D7/2) = 44(2) ns, tau(2p(2)3p 4S3/2) = 26.0(1.5) ns, and tau(2p(2)6s4P5/2) = 41(7) ns.

  • NEW OBLATE BAND IN HG-196 WITH QUENCHED M1 STRENGTH
  • 1993
  • In: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 47:6, s. R2443-R2446
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-spin states in the nucleUs Hg-196 were populated in the reaction (Os(Be,5n))-Os-192 at a beam energy of 65 MeV. A regular rotational-like DELTAI = 1 band has been observed up to an excitation energy of E* almost-equal-to 8.7 MeV and spin I almost-equal-to 30hBAR. This is the second observation of a band of this character in a mercury isotope. The experimental results are compared with mean field calculations and semiclassical estimates based on the Donau-Frauendorf formalism. The mercury bands show significantly lower B(M1)/B(E2) branching ratios as compared with similar bands in light lead nuclei. This difference may be more readily explained by a difference in single-particle structure rather than by large differences in deformation between the lead and mercury configurations.

  • Estimation of the Primary Current in a Saturated Transformer
  • 1991
  • In: Proceedings of the 30th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. - Linköping : Linköping University. - 0780304500 ; , s. 2363-2365 vol.3
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is pointed out that, when a current in a power system is measured using a transformer, the measurement can be distorted by transformer saturation. The authors examine two methods of estimating the primary current from the secondary in the presence of saturation. The first is based on an extended Kalman filter, while the second is based on an off-line Gauss-Newton method
