    • The relative nobility of Cr2N in duplex stainless steels (DSSs) was investigated in isothermally aged 2205 and 2507 DSSs using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) and SEM/EDS. The specimens contained nitrides, austenite and sigma phase but no ferrite. In these materials, Cr2N exhibits a higher Volta potential than sigma phase and austenite, implying the highest practical nobility of Cr2N compare to the surrounding phases. The composition and alloying effect can explain the relative nobility of the phases. The apparent "size effect" of small Cr2N on the measured Volta potential difference is probably due to the influence of surrounding matrix. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

However, to significantly increase phosphorus recycling, education, awareness-raising, investment in technology and infrastructure, and policy support are urgently needed.

    • The latest development of a thermodynamic database is demonstrated with application examples related to the steelmaking process and steel property predictions. The database, TCOX, has comprehensive descriptions of the solution phases using ionic models. More specifically, applications involving sulphur and oxygen, separately as well as combined, are presented and compared with relevant multi-component experimental information found in the literature. The over-all agreement is good.

  • Processes of non-identification: Business school brands and academic faculty

    • This paper examines the internal implications of branding within higher education, a specific context which is dominated by the co-existence of strong professional logics and identity structures. We focus on how and whether academic faculty identify with the branding practices undertaken by their respective institution. The paper proposes a communicative perspective on brand identification to understand how academic faculty relate to and make sense of the brand. The findings, from responses of 65 faculty members at five business schools, indicate widespread indifference and non-identification with brand messages. Specifically, we identify four types of disconnects between faculty members and branding practices of their respective schools, namely ambiguity, emptiness, misalignment, and irrelevance. The evidence of these disconnects, we argue, suggests that the faculty members refrain from relating the brand to their own identities. Although individuals relate to discourses around the brand, these are often not internalized and do not thereby impact on their individual identity. Rather than navigating between identity tensions, they eschew identification altogether. We contribute to research on how branding works inside contemporary organizations – including higher education - through questioning the role of identity in branding processes seen as the management of meaning.

    • Recent research suggests that the well-being of both individuals and society in general may have a neurobiological basis linked to empathy. This raises the issue of available routes for enhancing empathy (through interventions such as education, training, pharmacology, etc.). One of the most important features of the human brain, especially of the brains of children and teenagers, is its plasticity. Millions of children and teenagers spend many hours every day playing computer games. Many computer games include different forms of violence and aggression and there has been extensive research that indicates that there is a correlation between playing these games, aggression, and reduced disposition to pro-social behaviors. However, much less research has been conducted on the potential effects of pro-social and non-violent computer games. Since there is not yet a comprehensive model of the possible causal relationships between playing such games and neuropsychological function, neuroendocrine function (e.g. oxytocin release), empathy, pro-social behaviors, and individual and societal well-being, we provide a basic theoretical framework for empirical research on these issues. The aim of this framework is ultimately to establish not only correlational evidence, but to allow the development of experimental protocols to meaningfully examine the causal relationships and mechanisms.

  • The Crystallization of Regulatory Norms

    • This article investigates the processes through which regulatory norms generally, and in the context of transnational private regulation (TPR) in particular, become effective. We argue that institutionalization — the embedding of norms within some wider structures which impact upon their distribution, enforcement, and mode of transmission — is generally central to the processes through which regulatory norms are crystallized. We note that, within processes of crystallization of TPR norms, the potential for managing legitimacy has been exploited through the institutionalization of policies, structures, and processes which are responsive to the beliefs, expectations or interests of the relevant legitimacy communities. However, we suggest that the focus of such legitimating strategies on the making of rules and standards exposes weaknesses and limits to the potential of such legitimation attaching to actions which implement such norms through monitoring and enforcement, particularly where such processes are embedded within supply-chain contracts.

    • The sea urchin is an emergent model system for studying basic and translational immunology. Here we report a new method for the harvesting and maintenance of primary immune cells isolated from adult Paracentrotus lividus, a common Mediterranean sea urchin species. This optimised method uses coelomocyte culture medium, containing a high-affinity Ca2+ chelator, as the ideal harvesting and anti-clotting vehicle and short-term culture medium (≤48 h), and artificial seawater as the master medium that maintains cell survival and in vitro-ex vivo physiological homeostasis over 2 weeks. Gradually reducing the amount of anticoagulant solution in the medium and regularly replacing the medium led to improved culture viability. Access to a robust and straightforward in vitro-ex vivo system will expedite our understanding of deuterostome immunity as well as underscore the potential of sea urchin with respect to biomedicine and regulatory testing.

  • A novel model for glaze ice accretion

    • This paper introduces a novel model to predict ice accretion in glaze ice conditions due to supercooled water droplets. Glaze icing is controlled by a large number of interacting physical phenomena. The purpose of the suggested model was to offer a faster alternative to explicitly modelling these phenomena. The paper presents the suggested model and investigates the sensitivity of the predictions on the model parameters for three experimental cases in the literature. The results indicate a qualitatively correct behavior. Quantitatively, the model over-predicts the amount of accreted ice, the error being significantly larger in severe icing conditions. The errors are caused partly by the choice of faster numerical approaches and by the lack of possibility to account for detaching ice from the surface.
