  • A modal shift to inland waterways: Actor perspectives on alternative business concepts
  • 2019
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Road haulage causes undisputed negative environmental impact in terms of CO2-emissions, noise, infrastructure damage, congestion, road accidents and is energy intensive. At longer transport distance (e.g. trans-ocean) maritime transport is preferable as it is more cost efficient. At shorter distances, there are financial, operational, market-related and regulatory issues that make waterway transport less attractive. Meanwhile, as waterway transport is favorable from an environmental perspective, the support for modal shift from road to sea has become an integral part of transport policy both at EU-level and in several countries across Europe. Among the different types of shipping (trans-ocean, short-sea, coastal), inland shipping is of particular importance when it comes to reduce congestion on roads. Ports are most often located in or near large cities, which in particular causes congestion on access roads to ports and the cities, and also in the countries in general. Hence, whereas cost is a barrier that must be overcome, using inland waterway transportation (IWT) is preferable from an environmental perspective, and a modal shift is a highly prioritized issue by governments. In some central European countries, IWT is well developed, while in countries such as Sweden, the share of inland shipping is very low, < 1%, and with no or little container traffic. With well-functioning fairways in inland waterways in Sweden, there is a large potential for increasing its utilization.

  • Planerarens roll i förändring
  • 2015
  • In: Tillväxt kräver planering. - Karlskrona : Boverket och Tillväxtverket. - 9789175632940 ; , s. 38-47
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • ´Influencers´ in urban freight– A business model perspective
  • 2019
  • In: 11th International Cionference on City Logistics. - : Institute for City Logistics.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study explores how norm-setting third-party urban freight stakeholders, referred to as ‘influencers’, may indirectly put pressure on actors in the urban freight setting. The results indicate that influencers may pressure receivers on logistical issues and shape the physical environment in which deliveries are conducted. Such acts indirectly force carriers to adopt more sustainable practices and take decisions that impact their business models. The results bring to light the often-overlooked power that influencers have in relation to the development of actor behavior along the urban freight supply chain.

  • Business models for sustainable biofuel transport: the potential for intermodal transport
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 113:1 February, s. 426-437
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The use of solid wood biofuels for energy production in heating plants has increased drastically during the last decades. Great interest has been shown in replacing unsustainable road transport of wood fuel with more sustainable intermodal transport. This paper maps the common business models for biofuel transport in Sweden and suggests how these models may be developed to accommodate intermodal transport. A view of the biofuel supply chain as five overlapping networks (industry, material, operations, transport, and infrastructure) connected by four transaction markets (sourcing, operations, transport, and traffic) have been used. Four typical business models have been found: Regional/National Biofuel Company, Local Biofuel Company, Heating Plant Own Account, and Wood Processing Industry. Cooperation and vertical integration among the actors are important to reach the large transport volumes required for intermodal transport. Key issues to increase the intermodal potential are: increased vertical integration and cooperation, sharing of transport resources and infrastructure, joint purchases, outsourcing to expert actors, building trust and open communication, and not underestimating the complexity of intermodal transport. The results have implications for any actor interested in developing intermodal transport or policy measures. The contribution includes the new approach of developing business models by using the five-layer network-market model.

  • The juxtaposition of business model innovation and activity space re-conceptualization
  • 2015
  • In: APROS/EGOS Conference 2015 - Spaces, Constraints, Creativities: Organization and Disorganization. December 9–11, 2015.Sydney, Australia.. ; Subtheme 04
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study explores the role of activity space in relation to business model innovation in incumbent firms. The study relies on empirical data gathered from two banks and four energy utilities that went through business model innovation processes during the last two decades. Based on the results it is possible to draw the conclusion that the managerial approaches to business model innovation in the two sectors both share similarities and contain striking differences. The results also exemplifies how managers incorporate the use of space into customer value creation. In conclusion the study form a first step towards improving our knowledge about the role that activity space plays in relation to business model innovation.

  • Modal shift to inland waterways: dealing with barriers in two Swedish cases
  • 2018
  • In: The 23rd Annual Conference of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Logistics Research Network (LRN), Plymouth, 5-7 September.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Previous research on IWW transport has identified various types of barriers for a modal shift from road to sea: regulatory, financial, service and market related (described further later in the paper). In order for a modal shift to take place, actors need to take external prerequisites into account, but foremost, offer competitive services that can overcome the barriers. In Sweden, actors have to take major steps to attract a larger volume of goods that will enable the shift to IWW transportation. Barriers and key issues for implementation need to be understood from the perspective of how actors can overcome them. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyse how barriers for a modal shift can be overcome, by studying actors in the start-up phase of offering IWW transport services.

  • Lokala värmemarknader
  • 2017
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
