  • Forest values and application of different management activities among small-scale forest owners in five EU countries
  • 2023
  • In: Forest Policy and Economics. - : Elsevier. - 1389-9341 .- 1872-7050. ; 146
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Forests are important for the transition to a bioeconomy. With 60% of Europe's forest area owned and managed by small-scale owners, these owners' management behaviour is key. Identifying commonalities and differences between owners in different EU countries promotes effective implementation of EU strategies for a sustainable transition to a wood-based bioeconomy. This study examines the value orientations and management behaviour of private small-scale forest owners in five EU countries. Based on a questionnaire survey in Austria, Finland, Germany, Slovenia, and Sweden (n = 2524), we analysed these owners' values, and how various management activities are perceived in relation to management strategies. Respondents rated the importance of economic, environmental, and social values regarding their forest holdings, and were divided into groups based on their value orientation. Overall, the largest value group was ‘All values very important’; more so in Austria, Finland, and Germany than in Slovenia and Sweden. In Finland and Sweden the proportion of respondents in the ‘Economic and environmental values’ value group was low. This suggets that small-scale forest owners in these countries rarely consider economics and the environment together. Forest management activities were applied to varying degrees in the five countries. However, respondents in all countries who considered all values to be very important were the most active in all management activities compared to those who considered all values to be somewhat important. Our analysis highlighted the importance of context, showing that the propensity to use a particular activity was explained to a lesser extent by owner characteristics and value orientation and, in the case of most activities, more strongly by country. The way objectives of policies and management strategies are communicated may need to be adapted to the specific conditions of each country.

  • Functional Economic Regions, Accessibility and Regional Development
  • 2015
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this paper, we first present how one can create functional economic regions. Then, we elaborate on the economic activity and spatial interaction, which forms functional regions, and the development of the system of functional regions. Our presentation shows that the economy is structured in functional regions, and hence it is important to use functional regions in economic studies, in order to produce correct results, and for regional policy, in order for the policy to be effective. We observe, that the often used NUTS-regions are very large compared to the functional regions. We argue, therefore, that the use of NUTS-regions ought to be replaced by the use of functional regions. This would lead to more reliable results and better policy outcomes.

  • Kompetensprofilen hos undervisande personal på socionomutbildningar: En strategisk fråga för socionomfältet : [The competence profile of teaching staff in social work education programs - a strategic issue for the field of social work]
  • 2022
  • In: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - Lund : Förbundet för forskning i socialt arbete (FORSA). - 1104-1420 .- 2003-5624. ; 29:2, s. 209-233
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the past four decades, the higher education in social work has expanded greatly in Sweden, but analyses of what this development means for the field of social work are few. No scientific text pays specifically attention to the competence profile of the teaching staff. The aim of this article is to investigate the quality of the education with a focus on the competence profile among teaching staff in social work education programs. The competence profile is analysed by studying the competence on social work as academic discipline (Bachelor of Science in Social Work for non-PhD teaching staff and PhD in social work for staff with doctoral degree) and scientific level(PhD among the teaching staff) based on two quality criteria: two-thirds of the teaching staff with doctoral degree and two-thirds with social work as their main academic discipline. The article has a comparative approach by comparing both the competence profile between higher education institutions with social work programs 2020 and the development between 2008-2020. The article uses quantifiable data that has been collected through a survey with basic facts about the teaching stuff from all institutions with social work programs and statistical data from the Swedish Higher Education Authority. The analyses of the empirical material has led to two main conclusions regarding the competence profile of teaching staff: none of the higher education institution with social work program in Sweden meets both quality criteria and the differences between the institutions risk to develop an stratified higher education with a hierarchy between social work programs with negative consequences for the discipline as well as for the students’, labour market entry after graduation and for clients.

  • Integration of design, inspection and quality management systems
  • 1994
  • In: Proceedings. - Croydon : Automotive automation. - 0947719687 ; , s. 421-427
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper discusses the integration of design, inspection and quality management systems, and in particular the standard for the exchange of product model data (STEP) and the proposed STEP application protocol (AP) for inspection process planning (AP219). Relatively little progress has so far been made towards development of this AP. The need for a concerted industry led initiative to adopt and continue the work completed to date is suggested. The goal of such a consortium would be to develop and promote the use of AP219 and software tools to support its adoption and implementation

  • Datasets for mapping pastoralist movement patterns and risk zones of Rift Valley fever occurrence
  • 2018
  • In: Data in Brief. - : Elsevier. - 2352-3409. ; 16, s. 762-770
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease affecting humans and animals. It is caused by RVF virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. The data presented in this article propose environmental layers suitable for mapping RVF vector habitat zones and livestock migratory routes. Using species distribution modelling, we used RVF vector occurrence data sampled along livestock migratory routes to identify suitable vector habitats within the study region which is located in the central and the north-eastern part of Kenya. Eleven herds monitored with GPS collars were used to estimate cattle utilization distribution patterns. We used kernel density estimator to produce utilization contours where the 0.5 percentile represents core grazing areas and the 0.99 percentile represents the entire home range. The home ranges were overlaid on the vector suitability map to identify risks zones for possible RVF exposure. Assimilating high spatial and temporal livestock movement and vector distribution datasets generates new knowledge in understanding RVF epidemiology and generates spatially explicit risk maps. The results can be used to guide vector control and vaccination strategies for better disease control.
