  • State Policy for Technological Innovation in East Asia : A comparative study of South Korea and Taiwan

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • South Korea and Taiwan are two of the most prominent examples of newly industrializing economies which have been remarkably successful during the last three decades. This paper gives an overview of South Koreas’s and Taiwan’s development and innovation policies, and compare between these two economies’ main strengths and weaknesses regarding innovation and technology. Conclusions drawn show that there are similiarities as well as differences in the innovation systems in the two economies. The role of the state has been fundamental in South Korea’s and Taiwan’s economic and industrial development. In South Korea there has been very strong ties between the chaebols and the state. The chaebols have been the greatest strenght of Korea’s innovation system, while the there is a lack of interplay between universities and the private sector. The role of the state in Taiwan has concentraded more on creating supporting institutions that have focused on building human resources, acquiring technology from abroad, creating science and technology capacities. In Taiwan it seems that there are more developed mechanisms to transfer research results from public research establishments to the industry, especially SMEs. The industrial policy in Taiwan has supported a rather close cooperation between industry and the state and increased connection between universities and the state. The weakest links seem to be between universities and the industry.

  • Från reserv till reserv. Genusaspekter på den regionala arbetsmarknadspolitiken.
  • 2008
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Essays on Spatial Economies and Organization
  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis concerns both static and dynamic modeling in a spatial computable general equilibrium setting. First, we have applied a static framework for the assessment of economic impacts of the Öresund bridge. Secondly, we make an attempt to enhance the static framework through the introduction of economic dynamics. Third, we introduce the STRAGO model, incorporating monopolistic competition, dynamics and additive transport costs. STRAGO is applied to the analysis of effects from a kilometer tax on freight. The last paper presents a framework for studying the division, or fragmentation of production. This framework uses the standard theory of monopolistic competition, with a production chain extension, through a recursive view of markets. The optimal level of fragmentation in such industries is studied.

  • Promotion and advertising
  • 2006
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Businesses must sell.  And, while the quality, price, availability, etc., of the goods and/or services to sell must fit the markets in which they are to be sold, sales do not occur unless (potential) customers know what a business has to offer.  Where there is only one supplier, customer awareness is given.   But in a highly competitive environment, a condition that typifies most small business markets, a gaggle of voices attempt to familiarize (potential) customers with the goods and/or services they sell and the reasons (potential) customers should patronize them rather than someone else.  Effectively, each competitor endeavors to distinguish from the crowd.  This differentiation process requires promotion, often including formal advertising.  Successful promotion and advertising typically demands considerable amounts of human and/or physical capital.  Since most small businesses are resource constrained, the promotional challenges for small-business owners and managers are even more demanding than they would be in other situations. This issue of the National Small Business Poll, therefore, focuses on Promotion and Advertising.

  • Marketing perspectives
  • 2006
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • There are almost six million small employers in the United States and millions of other businesses without employees.  In addition, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of businesses located outside the United States and many non-profits located within compete for American customers.  The resulting cacophony makes it very difficult for the individual small-business owner to emerge from the din and market his or her firm and its products/services.  Still, small-business owners and managers have no choice.  They must reach their potential customer base they are to have any chance of survival, let alone success.  Thus the marketing attributes and strategies employed in successful firms are of particular interest to many and yield this issue of the National Small Business Poll, Marketing Perspectives.
