  • MEASUREMENTS OF THE REACTION CROSS SECTIONS OF NEUTRON-RICH Sn ISOTOPES AT THE R 3 B SETUP
  • 2024
  • In: Acta Physica Polonica B, Proceedings Supplement. - 1899-2358. ; 17:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A fundamental framework to describe nuclear matter as a function of pressure and nuclear isospin asymmetry is the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). Constraining the parameters of the EoS is one of the central issues in nuclear physics, especially since the slope parameter L has not yet been constrained well experimentally. It has been identified that a precise determination of the neutron-removal cross section in neutron-rich nuclei, which correlates with the neutron-skin thickness, would provide a more precise constraint on L. To this end, an experiment was performed at the R3B setup in the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH as a part of the FAIR Phase-0 program. The reactions are studied in inverse kinematics with neutron-rich tin isotopes in the mass range of A = 124–134 on carbon targets of different thicknesses. The reaction products have been measured at beam energies of 400–900 MeV/u in a kinematically complete manner. In this communication, the analysis of124Sn+12C at 900 MeV/u is presented. The charge-exchange reactions, resulting processes, and their role in the calculation of other reaction cross sections are discussed.

  • Unveiling the two-proton halo character of 17 Ne: Exclusive measurement of quasi-free proton-knockout reactions
  • 2022
  • In: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 827
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F→15⁎O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

  • RELATIVISTIC COULOMB EXCITATION OF 124 Sn
  • 2024
  • In: Acta Physica Polonica B, Proceedings Supplement. - 1899-2358. ; 17:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Coulomb excitation of 124, 128, 130, 132, 134Sn isotopes in the electric field of a Pb target have been studied using the R3B setup as a part of the FAIR Phase-0 program. The experiment was motivated by the possibility of using the nuclear dipole response to infer valuable information on the slope of the symmetry energy of the nuclear equation of state. Measurements were performed in inverse kinematics at relativistic energies of 750 MeV/u and 904 MeV/u. The analysis method and preliminary results for the decay channel with a single outgoing neutron for 124Sn are reported.

  • Halo effects in the low-energy scattering of 15 C with heavy targets
  • 2020
  • In: Acta Physica Polonica, Series B.. - 1509-5770 .- 0587-4254. ; 51:3, s. 731-736
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The neutron-rich carbon isotope 15C was postulated to be a halo nucleus (Sn = 1215 keV, S2n = 9395 keV) according to different high-energy experiments. If so, it would be the only halo nucleus exhibiting a "pure" s-wave structure of the ground state. At low collision energies, the effect of this halo structure should manifest as a strong absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section, with a total suppression of the nuclear rainbow due to the large neutron transfer and breakup probabilities, enhanced by the halo configuration. The IS619 experiment, carried out at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN (Switzerland), is the first dynamical study of this nucleus at energies around the Coulomb barrier. It aims to probe the halo structure via the measurement of the elastic cross section on a high-Z 208Pb target. Preliminary results of the elastic cross section are discussed and compared to Optical Model calculations.

  • Study of the scattering of 15C at energies around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2020
  • In: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1643:1
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure"2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations.

  • Proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn collision around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 2586:1, s. 012079-012079
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The 8B+64Zn reaction at 38.5 MeV has been studied at HIE-ISOLDE CERN to investigate proton halo effect on the reaction dynamics. For the first time it was used the only existing post-accelerated 8B beam. The measured elastic scattering angular distribution showed a small suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak, opposite to what observed for the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on the same target where a large suppression was observed instead. Inclusive angular and energy distributions of breakup fragments were also measured showing that, both, elastic and non-elastic breakup contribute. The presence of the additional Coulomb interactions halo-core and halo-target in 8B makes the reaction dynamics in this proton-halo nucleus different than the neutron-halo case. © 2023 Institute of Physics Publishing. • Measurement of nuclear interaction cross sections towards neutron-skin thickness determination
  • 2024
  • In: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 855
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The accuracy of reaction theories used to extract properties of exotic nuclei from scattering experiments is often unknown or not quantified, but of utmost importance when, e.g., constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter from observables as the neutron-skin thickness. In order to test the Glauber multiple-scattering model, the total interaction cross section of [Formula presented] on carbon targets was measured at initial beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The measurements were performed during the first experiment of the newly constructed R3B (Reaction with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment after the start of FAIR Phase-0 at the GSI/FAIR facility with beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The combination of the large-acceptance dipole magnet GLAD and a newly designed and highly efficient Time-of-Flight detector enabled a precise transmission measurement with several target thicknesses for each initial beam energy with an experimental uncertainty of ±0.4%. A comparison with the Glauber model revealed a discrepancy of around 3.1% at higher beam energies, which will serve as a crucial baseline for the model-dependent uncertainty in future fragmentation experiments.

  • Search for beta-delayed proton emission from 11 Be
  • 2020
  • In: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 56:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report on an attempt to reproduce the observation of β--delayed proton emission from 11Be through detection of the final state nucleus 10Be with accelerator mass spectrometry. Twelve samples were collected at the ISOLDE facility at CERN at different separator settings, allowing tests of different sources of contamination to be carried out. The observed amounts of 10Be per collected 11Be rule out several contamination sources, but do not agree internally. Formation of BeH molecular ions in the ion source may explain our data, in which case an upper limit of the βp branching ratio of 2.2 × 10 - 6 can be derived.

  • Probing proton halo effects in the 8 B+ 64 Zn collision around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2021
  • In: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 820
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn reaction at an energy around 1.5 times the Coulomb barrier have been studied at HIE-ISOLDE CERN using, for the first time, the only existing postaccelerated 8B beam. This, together with the use of a high granularity and large solid angle detection system, allowed for a careful mapping of the elastic angular distribution, especially in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. Contrary to what is observed for the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on the same target in a similar energy range, the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution shows only a modest suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak, with no remarkable enhancement of the total reaction cross-section. Inclusive angular and energy distributions of 7Be produced in direct reaction processes have also been measured. The comparison of these data with the results of theoretical calculations for the elastic and non-elastic breakup contributions indicate that both processes are important. Overall, the experimental data suggest a 8B collision dynamics at the barrier very different from the one of neutron halo nuclei, showing only modest effects of coupling to continuum. This behaviour can be interpreted as due to the presence of the additional Coulomb interactions halo-core and halo-target together with the presence of the centrifugal barrier felt by the valence proton of 8B.
