  • Search for heavy Majorana or Dirac neutrinos and right-handed W gauge bosons in final states with charged leptons and jets in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2023
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 83:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos NR and heavy right-handed gauge bosons WR is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 collected by the ATLAS detector at √s=13 TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right-handed WR boson and NR plane. The excluded region extends to about m(WR)=6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac NR neutrinos at m(NR)<1 TeV. NR with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(WR)=4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and limits of m(NR) up to 3.6 TeV for m(WR)=5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

  • Search for heavy neutral leptons in decays of W bosons produced in 13 TeV pp collisions using prompt and displaced signatures with the ATLAS detector
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of High Energy Physics. - : SPRINGER. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2019:10
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The problems of neutrino masses, matter-antimatter asymmetry, and dark matter could be successfully addressed by postulating right-handed neutrinos with Majorana masses below the electroweak scale. In this work, leptonic decays of W bosons extracted from 32.9 fb−1 to 36.1 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the LHC are used to search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) that are produced through mixing with muon or electron neutrinos. The search is conducted using the ATLAS detector in both prompt and displaced leptonic decay signatures. The prompt signature requires three leptons produced at the interaction point (either μμe or eeμ) with a veto on same-flavour opposite-charge topologies. The displaced signature comprises a prompt muon from the W boson decay and the requirement of a dilepton vertex (either μμ or μe) displaced in the transverse plane by 4–300 mm from the interaction point. The search sets constraints on the HNL mixing to muon and electron neutrinos for HNL masses in the range 4.5–50 GeV. [Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2019, The Author(s).

  • Search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of Z bosons in the ℓ+ℓ-ℓ′ +ℓ′ - and ℓ+ℓ-νν¯ final states using 139 fb - 1 of proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2021
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 81:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of Z bosons leading to ℓ+ℓ-ℓ′ +ℓ′ - and ℓ+ℓ-νν¯ final states, where ℓ stands for either an electron or a muon, is presented. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected from 2015 to 2018 that corresponds to the integrated luminosity of 139 fb - 1 recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Different mass ranges spanning 200 GeV to 2000 GeV for the hypothetical resonances are considered, depending on the final state and model. In the absence of a significant observed excess, the results are interpreted as upper limits on the production cross section of a spin-0 or spin-2 resonance. The upper limits for the spin-0 resonance are translated to exclusion contours in the context of Type-I and Type-II two-Higgs-doublet models, and the limits for the spin-2 resonance are used to constrain the Randall–Sundrum model with an extra dimension giving rise to spin-2 graviton excitations. © 2021, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

  • Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2020
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 125:25
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H→bb¯) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level. © 2020 CERN.

  • Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector
  • 2020
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 125:22
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a pp collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1 collected at s=13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17-340 pb (16-5+6-320-90+130 pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb (100-30+40 and 100-30+40 pb) for the ηc and J/ψ hypotheses, respectively. © 2020 CERN. © 2020 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration. • Search for Higgs boson decays into two new low-mass spin-0 particles in the 4b channel with the ATLAS detector using pp collisions at s =13 TeV
  • 2020
  • In: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 102:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes a search for beyond the Standard Model decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles subsequently decaying into b-quark pairs, H→aa→(bb¯)(bb¯), using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV. This search focuses on the range 15 GeV≤ma≤30 GeV, where the decay products are collimated; it is complementary to a previous search in the same final state targeting the range 20 GeV≤ma≤60 GeV, where the decay products are well separated. A novel strategy for the identification of the a→bb¯ decays is deployed to enhance the efficiency for topologies with small separation angles. The search is performed with 36 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected in 2015 and 2016 and sets upper limits on the production cross section of H→aa→(bb¯)(bb¯), where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a Z boson. © 2020 CERN.

  • Search for Higgs boson pair production in the [Formula: see text] final state from pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeVwith the ATLAS detector.
  • 2015
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 75:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A search for Higgs boson pair production [Formula: see text] is performed with 19.5 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data at [Formula: see text] TeV, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. The decay products of each Higgs boson are reconstructed as a high-momentum [Formula: see text] system with either a pair of small-radius jets or a single large-radius jet, the latter exploiting jet substructure techniques and associated b-tagged track-jets. No evidence for resonant or non-resonant Higgs boson pair production is observed. The data are interpreted in the context of the Randall-Sundrum model with a warped extra dimension as well as the two-Higgs-doublet model. An upper limit on the cross-section for [Formula: see text] of 3.2 (2.3) fb is set for a Kaluza-Klein graviton [Formula: see text] mass of 1.0 (1.5) TeV, at the 95 % confidence level. The search for non-resonant Standard Model hh production sets an observed 95 % confidence level upper limit on the production cross-section [Formula: see text] of 202 fb, compared to a Standard Model prediction of [Formula: see text] fb.

  • Search for Higgs Boson Pair Production in the γγbb[over ¯] Final State Using pp Collision Data at sqrt[s]=8 TeV from the ATLAS Detector.
  • 2015
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 114:8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Searches are performed for resonant and nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the γγbb[over ¯] final state using 20 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A 95% confidence level upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio of nonresonant production is set at 2.2 pb, while the expected limit is 1.0 pb. The difference derives from a modest excess of events, corresponding to 2.4 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. The limit observed in the search for a narrow X→hh resonance ranges between 0.7 and 3.5 pb as a function of the resonance mass.
