  • Platser i Praktiken och Social Hållbarhet : Hökarängen och andra små centrumbildningar i fokus
  • 2009
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Analysing Architectural Configuration : Spatial heterogeneity as form, function, and communication
  • 2009
  • In: urbanism & urban qualities. - Ålborg : Ålborg Universitet. ; , s. 25-30
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Spatial and material form, the tools and modes of architects, participate in shaping our lives in many ways which are not detirminate but strongly influential. One of the ways in which it does this is by spatial configuration - that is, the setup of relations between spaces - which responds to and describes social relations as well as potentials, possibilities, restrictions, and suggestions. This both through practical and communicative means, and in a great many ways. Research at sad tries to focus more specifically at these components of the physical environment, and some intriguing results have been produced both when it comes to buildings and urban environments. Critical for these findingshave been the involvement of different theories and methods that complement one another, and the development of new models of analysis. This presentation aims to briefly present some of these models and results.

  • Proceedings of the 7th International Space Syntax Symposium
  • 2009
  • Editorial proceedings (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • [Foreword to the printed proceedings]The Space Syntax symposia are by now recognised as an established tradition in international architectural research, a tradition that combines high scientific rigour with high relevance for architectural practice. It will be the primary aim of the organisers of the Stockholm symposium to carry on this tradition.Still, each symposium has its own flavour due to continuous changes in the global society, but also due to the local context of each symposium. We believe that contemporary Stockholm presents a situation in architecture and urban design of great international relevance. Stockholm is often described as a successful city in these fields, but it is a success to a high degree relying on a top-down approach to architectural and urban development. From a local horizon it is becoming obvious how Stockholm needs to learn from the kind of bottom-up urban processes often prevalent in cities less often described as successful. To a large degree it is the study of such self-organising and emergent processes in buildings and cities that is at the heart of Space Syntax research. Since this implies an exploration of the field of the possible in architectural and urban design, one here also finds the reason for the high relevance of Space Syntax for architectural practice. We hope that this tension between top-down and bottom-up approaches in architecture and urban design will be a lasting memory of the Stockholm symposium.

  • Kalk & Hantverk för byggnadsvård och nybyggnad : Dokumentation av konferens på Läckö slott 26-27 augusti 1999
  • 2000
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Competitive cooperation in Swedish projects for sustainable building
  • 2008
  • In: Melbourne, Australia. - 9780646503721
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The notion that we are becoming more competitive and individualistic is diffused in today Sweden, argued to be a positive or negative outcome of the social, political and economical changes of the last decades. So is also in the construction sector. The call for competitive building outcomes has driven many technical innovations while the lack of cooperation is claimed to be the principal cause of non-sustainable development. Hence the dichotomy must be verified and our understanding of it must become sharper.Challenged by the climate change societies may compete about sustainable results, but competing to be sustainable has a twofold outcome. We may compete in order to reach high performance measurable solutions in one building and we may compete to spread good enough sustainable integrated solutions throughout the environment. The both seem to be necessary, the first attracting the traditional innovation paradigm, measured in quantities, while the second risks staying in the shadow of technological progress. We have to worry about this and develop new integrated theories.Emerging patterns of competitive cooperation are observed in evolving projects for sustainable buildings in a local Swedish reality, within a study (Demo-04) focused on giving guidelines for the implementation of sustainable building goals. A stakeholder participatory approach reinforces the need of a better understanding of the integrated sector-specific innovations as they all affect the design and construction processes. They are questioning the way people make decisions in everyday work and address a corporate integrated and shared responsibility. Innovations in building can be inconsistent with the concepts of sustainability when isolated from shared and clear sustainability goals. Still sustainable innovations emerge within a framework of coordinated design between stakeholders and new profiles of action in projects. Transparency is the common denominator of both cooperative and competitive behaviours and guarantees the possibility of resilience of the chosen social and technological paths.

  • Evaluation of a colour reference box as an aid for identification of colour appearance in rooms
  • 2000
  • In: Color Research & Application. ; 25:3, s. 214-225
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Hitherto, methods for visual assessment of colour appearance have not been developed for use in the study of rooms. We seek a practical method that allows one or two observers to characterize a room by identifying the perceived colours. Verbal descriptions are necessary, but lack precision. A magnitude estimation method may enable a more precise location in colour space. However, the need of a group of well-trained observers makes it impractical for room studies. A method involving matches between reference colour samples and the perceived room colours would be ideal. But, reference colour samples require a standard illumination; otherwise, the sample changes colour due to different room light. Hence, a method involving a colour reference box was developed. The colour reference box with its standard source of illumination provides a reference situation, where colour samples can be visually compared with the colours of the room. The study presented is an evaluation of this colour reference box. The crucial problem is that the same color sample in the box is perceived differently, as the observer adapts to various lighting conditions. The aim of the study was to investigate if these different perceptions of the samples could be described and controlled. In the study, 18 observers were asked to visually assess the hue of 15–66 samples, and mark its place in the NCS hue circle. The assessment of the samples was made in two different room lights: incandescent light and simulated daylight. The result of the study showed a clear tendency for the samples, perceived in the box, to shift colour in simulated daylight compared to incandescent light. It was concluded that the problem with the observer's adaptation to the room light can be described and controlled, although complementary studies are needed to quantify the adaptation effect with more accuracy, and to investigate differences in nuance. Thus, it seems that the colour reference box can be used to visually evaluate and describe the differences in colour appearance in different rooms. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. • Denk- und Kommunikationsansätze zur Bewertung des Nachhaltigen Bauens und Wohnens anhang der Ökologischen Wohnsiedlung Flintenbreire in Lübeck
  • 2002
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • It is the aim of the present study to detect the reasons for these grievances, taking as an example the new Ecological Housing Estate Flintenbreite, and to demonstrate alternative solutions. For this purpose, different concepts of assessment are employed which meet the requirements of a full life cycle analysis. From the ecological perspective, these are the software tool GaBi of the University of Stuttgart, the MIPS concept of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy as well as the software tool GEMIS from the Eco Institute. In order to assess the quantity and quality of the area consumption, a special calculation method was developed on the basis of “Hemerobiestufen”, which illustrate the degree of naturalness of a surface area. The BKI Kostenplaner of the Baukosteninformationszentrum is used to analyze the economic factors. In order to assess social aspects, a special assessment method on the basis of national and international discussions is developed and applied. Apart from taking into account generally accepted ecological indicators, this study also attempts to develop economic indicators as well as indicators for measuring social sustainability of housing development concepts. By means of a working example the practicability of these indicators is examined. For assessing the degree of sustainability reached at the Ecological Housing Estate Flintenbreite 15 indicators are used. These are:•The Total Material Requirement (TMR)•The Accumulated Expenditure of Energy (KEA)•The Global Warming Potential related to 100 years (GWP 100)•Area consumption•Water consumption•Planning and implementation costs•Costs of construction and production•Costs of utilization including maintenance costs•Costs of pulling down, disposal and restoration•Average renting costs•Age composition of the residents•Income structure of the residents•Unemployment rate of the residents•Quota of women employed•Possibilities of participation of the residentsFor assessing and visualizing the several indicators, the COMPASS method, developed at the Wuppertal Institute, is applied.Since the process of construction at the Ecological Housing Estate Flintenbreite has been delayed as a result of the insolvencies of two of the developing companies, up to date only 26 of the planned 119 housing units have been completed. Therefore, in order to obtain valuable results the scientific approach had to be reduced in the course of this study. As the central elements of the approach the building above ground and the sewage concept, which has been used on a larger scale for the first time and which is based on a vacuum technique, are focused on. Apart from savings in water (only 1 liter per flush), this trend-setting, integrated sewage concept takes into account the utilization of nutrients and the energy content of excrements and biological waste. For that purpose, the flows grey water (residues without excrements), black water (toilet residues), rainwater and biological waste are dealt with separately within the whole concept. Through the fermentation of biological waste and excrements, biogas is won which is then used for power production in the housing estate’s own cogeneration plant. Three filters (constructed wetlands in the form of sand filters planted with reeds) are used for clearing the grey water. Using hollows on the 4.9 hectare wide housing development area, rainwater can seep away directly. The liquid manure remaining after anaerobic treatment is collected in a reservoir and used for agricultural means. Thus, nutrient cycles can be completed.Despite partly positive results it must be stated that these building measures, with regard to the building above ground, do not make a valuable contribution as far as more sustainable building is concerned. The sewage concept appears to be more apt to meet this requirement, although optimizing steps have yet to follow.Stakeholders from many different fields can take such steps in their respective discipline but also with regard to the interdisciplinary perspective. The chance to act beyond the boundaries of one’s own discipline, the ability to communicate as a key to joint action as well as the ability to see and open up new paths require new approaches and possibilities of acting. Thus, it is the duty of private persons, functionaries and elected candidates alike to help ensure corresponding education and qualification.Apart from that, on the international level, it is essential to initiate a changed, honest and consistent orientation of the rules of the WTO, the ILO and the UNEP without which a sustainable development will continue to be a utopia. And perhaps we may even have to go one step further and overcome an economy of interest and compound interest that is destroying resources, in order to be able to live the dream of a sustainable economic system.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Methods and tools including sustainable development indicators (SDIs) are important aids to the implementation of sustainable development in the construction industry. Through a qualitative analysis, a variety of methods which are widely used internationally can be assessed to establish their compliance with the general requirements of sustainable development. This paper looks at five fundamental criteria: holism, lifecycle assessment, directional certainty, traceability/transparency and local suitability. Most methods more or less meet these requirements, in which users play a central role in compliance. This paper identifies a number of remaining knowledge deficits: the recording and analysis of sociocultural indicators, additional environmental indicators such as land use, resource intensity, interior quality and usability, and a more detailed understanding of building usage and decommissioning costs. In addition to these knowledge deficits, and for a variety of reasons, there is also an implementation deficit: the practice of sustainable construction is lagging far behind the theory.

  • Office-type in Relation to Health, Well-being and Job Satisfaction Among Employees
  • 2008
  • In: Environment and Behavior. - : SAGE Publications. - 0013-9165 .- 1552-390X. ; 40, s. 636-668
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article investigates the hypothesis that office type has an influence on workers’ health status and job satisfaction and 469 employees in seven different types, defined by their unique setup of architectural and functional features, have rated their health status and job satisfaction. Multivariate regression models were used for analysis of these outcomes, with adjustment for age, gender, job rank, and line of business. Both health status and job satisfaction differed between the seven office types. Lowest health status was found in medium-sized and small open plan offices. Best health was among employees in cell offices and flex offices. Workers in these types of offices and in shared room offices also rated the highest job satisfaction. Lowest job satisfaction was in combi offices, followed by medium-sized open plan offices. The differences between employees could possibly be ascribed to variations in architectural and functional features of the office types.
