  • Geographies of Place Branding : Researching through small and medium sized cities
  • 2015
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Place branding is commonly conceptualized with a focus on big cities, such as London, New York and Singapore, building from concepts and models from mainstream branding theory. In contrast to such conceptualizations, this thesis focuses on place branding in small and medium-sized cities. The present thesis aims to study place branding from a geographical perspective. It starts with debates theoretical and empirical understandings of place branding; what it is and how it is affecting the places where it is introduced. The thesis develops and argues for a perspective of territoriality and relationality to place branding discussing concepts, methods and empirical approaches to carry out place branding research using geographical perspectives. Empirically, this thesis focuses on in-depth studies of place branding in small and medium-sized cities in Sweden. By analyzing the development of place branding over the course of time, nuances and aspects of both territorial and relational origin emerge, situating place branding practices within a wider spatial contextualization. Four individual papers are presented, which taken together contribute to the aim of the thesis. Paper 1 introduces the place branding research field in geography and how it has developed; Paper 2 investigates the phenomena of flagship buildings located in small cities and towns; Paper 3 discusses the relationship between policy tourism and place branding; and Paper 4 analyzes how local environmental policies are affected by green place branding. The thesis demonstrates the complex and continuously interchangeable spatial structures and place contexts that create and re-produce the geographies of place branding. Here, research models and methodological examples are presented to illustrate how place branding can be studied from a geographical perspective and thus improve theoretical understandings of place branding.

  • Bystander passivity in health care and school settings : Moral disengagement, moral distress, and opportunities for moral education
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of Moral Education. - : Routledge. - 0305-7240 .- 1465-3877. ; 48:2, s. 199-213
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Bystander passivity has received increased attention in the prevention of interpersonal harm, but it is poorly understood in many settings. In this article we explore bystander passivity in three settings based on existing literature: patient abuse in health care; bullying among schoolchildren; and oppressive treatment of students by teachers. Throughout the article we develop a theoretical approach that connects Obermann's unconcerned and guiltybystanders to theories of moral disengagement and moral distress respectively. Despite differences between the three settings, we show striking similarities between processes of disengagement, indicators of distress, and the constraints for intervention that bystanders identify. In relation to this, we discuss moral educational efforts that aim to strengthen bystanders’ moral agency in health care and school settings. Many efforts emphasize shared problem descriptions and collective responsibilities. As challenging as such efforts may be, there can be much to gain in terms of welfare and justice.

  • Students’ Perspectives on Bullying
  • 2016
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of the present thesis was to listen to, examine and conceptualise students’ perspectives on bullying. Students’ perspectives have not been commonly heard in research and less qualitative research has been conducted. This study contributes with students’ perspectives on bullying using semi-structured interviews with students from fourth-to eighth grade. This thesis includes four studies. The aim with paper I was to investigate how bystander actions in bullying situations and reasons behind these actions were articulated. Paper II was a comparison study between Sweden and US, focused on how students articulate and discuss what factors influence students’ decisions to defend or not defend victims when witnessing bullying. The aim in Paper III was to study how students themselves discuss, reason and make sense of how and why bullying processes emerges in their social worlds. In paper IV the aim was to study how junior high school girls discuss and understand bullying. Findings reveal that students’ reactions as bystanders to bullying depend on how they define the situation. Explanations to the emergence of bullying were understood through a complex social ordering of belonging process. Students position themselves and others in striving to belong, and when defining victims as responsible for bullying. Social norms and negotiation of identities were also discussed among the students. Students discussed how gender and a normative peer structure, where a pressure to fit in, interlinked with how they understood bullying.

  • Creating and challenging gendered spatialities : how space affects gender contracts
  • 2017
  • In: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 99:3, s. 223-237
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper discusses the spatial component of gender relations through an analysis of contemporary gender relations in rural Sweden. We use the concept of local gender contracts, analysing their nature and transformation in various contexts. When gendered practices are analysed at local level, negotiations about the gendering of everyday practices become visible. The focus is on analysing the (informal) strategies in such negotiations and how people act and react in relation to them. The results point to two alternative strategies. Women and men either adapt to the mainstream gender contract of the region, and adhere to it regardless of changes in society's demands, or challenge existing norms, practices and representations in their public and/or private lives, according to changes in local conditions. The local context is thus active in reproducing and maintaining, as well as transforming, gender relations and thereby reshaping the gender contract.

  • 2019
  • In: The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Urban and Regional Studies. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 9781118568453 - 9781118568446
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Space plays an important role in construction of space‐specific variations in the condition for women and men. This article presents a way to analyze the way these spatial conditions affect gender relations and practices in rural areas and how, and in what ways, they are reproduced and transformed by using the concept of local gender contract, understood as the unwritten rules that regulate relations between sexes and recreate and reform relations into everyday actions within the framework of the local structures in which they are performed. In rural areas these rules constitute a cornerstone in the construction of gendered rurality.

  • How to improve regional and local planning by applying a gender-sensitive analysis : examples from Sweden
  • 2018
  • In: Regional studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0034-3404 .- 1360-0591. ; 52:2, s. 274-284
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How to improve regional and local planning by applying a gender-sensitive analysis: examples from Sweden. Regional Studies. Regional development projects normally have gender-equality objectives, as these are recognized as one of the cornerstones of regional development. The success of gender-equality objectives is often analyzed by counting the number of men and women taking part in the projects. However, the extent to which this will enhance regional development is unclear and regional agents at a range of organizational levels express uncertainty about the most effective objectives and implementation measures. This paper proposes a way to assess the gender situation at the local level and, thus, to help enhance gender equality.

  • 2015
  • In: European Urban and Regional Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0969-7764 .- 1461-7145. ; 22:4, s. 368-382
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents a study on regional development and innovation systems in a Swedish county. The theoretical points of departure rest on human geographical and sociological perspectives.  The regional policy in Sweden today is characterised by a strongly emphasized governance model, i.e. an orientation towards networks and cluster initiatives. The regional development programme of the county of Värmland 2004-2007 was a template for this policy. It rested upon some basic principles, such as partnership engagements, networking, EU-specific linguistic usage and superstar rhetoric. But this seemingly innovative regional policy has roots in traditional industrial society (iron works and paper mills). The network planning model gives the opportunity for informal social structures to re-enter the area of regional planning. Gender equality in regional government policy was challenged by the presence of a homosocial shadow (seamy side) structure such as secret networks and clubs on the outside of the official organizations. Networks were also important in the reproduction of traditional power structures, male dominance and hegemony. One conclusion is that networking can be used both mutually as a progressive force and as a conservative tool among actors in the innovation policy.

  • Samhällsplaneringens förutsättningar och villkor : Områden, nivåer, gränser
  • 2019
  • In: Samhällsplaneringens teori och praktik. - Stockholm : Liber. - 9789147113613 ; , s. 12-20
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • What Crisis?
  • 2016
  • In: Book of abstracts. ; , s. 103-103
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to revisit a study that I made some years ago on a comparison between feminist and rural research and analysis. In an article published in Norsk Geografisk tidskrift 2001 (Forsberg, G., 2001, Rural and gender studies: A conceptual comparison, Norsk Geografisk Tidskrift  Vol 55, No 3, 2001, 152-160.) I made an overview of the development in Nordic rural research together with the corresponding development in gender studies. The analysis focused on phases with its prevailing doctrines or discourses. I found the similarities strikingly evident, even if I found some important differences as well. Underlying analysis was the way rural and women were understood in relation to urban areas and men respectively. Both were analysed in the light of crisis. Looking at contemporary research from this position, which is the crisis that rural reseraches are scrutinizing today?

  • 2017
  • In: Metoder och verktyg för sociala nyttoberäkningar i kollektivtrafiken. - Stockholm : Kulturgeografiska institutionen, Stockholms universitet. - 9789187355301 ; , s. 87-113
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2019
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Gendered youth strategies for inclusion in a changing society : breaking or reproducing the local gender contract?
  • 2018
  • In: Area (London 1969). - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 50:4, s. 520-528
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper explores how place and gender relations influence young people's ways of formulating their struggles and negotiations related to education, work, family, everyday life and achievement of certain life goals. In addition, the paper examines key municipal officials' viewpoints, opening up a space for exchange and development at the interface of policy actions and young people's embodied lives. It is shown that young men and women alike are aware of the challenge to deconstruct hegemonic notions of gender. The focus is on societal changes and young people's educational and work strategies in Dalarna, Central Sweden. Historically, this county was dependent on steel, iron and paper industries: traditionally male employment sectors. Transformation of the labour market is involving new trends and expectations. A result is that gender relations associated with place-specific, as well as general, assumptions about masculinity and femininity are becoming increasingly fluid while their discursive strength remains.

  • Gender and Social Practices in Migration : A case study of Thai women in rural Sweden
  • 2016
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Set within discussions of gender, migration and social practices, this thesis explores the ways in which Thai women migrants to Sweden build connections between rural areas through their daily activities. Arriving in Sweden primarily through marriage ties, Thai women migrants are more likely to live in Swedish rural areas than in urban areas. Rural areas are typically not seen as a site of globalization or as receivers of international migrants. In contrast to these perceptions, the case of Thai women migrants in the Swedish countryside reveals a complex and vigorous set of social practices that connect rural Sweden across spatial and temporal scales. The aim of this study is to explore the ways in which Thai migrant women construct and implement social practices spatially and temporally. Drawing on the life stories of 16 Thai women living in Sweden, along with other sources of empirical data analysed within feminist epistemologies, this thesis discusses: In what ways does gender shape migrant social practices? How are social practices constructed within individual migrant micro-geographies? By what means are migrant social practices contextualized by spaces and places?Thai women migrants are gendered agents of these social practices and are utilizing specific resources, objects and networks to bridge the distances found in their daily lives. The empirical material examined in this thesis points to the importance of women’s everyday social practices in connecting and linking rural areas globally at different spatial and temporal scales. The results highlight the importance of a translocalism perspective to understanding gendered social practices. This study adds to the translocal discussion by demonstrating that social practices are embedded in multiple geographic sites and scales. Thai women migrants, in this study, emerge as significant actors in global countrysides and do the functional work of bringing spaces and places together daily and through their life course. This thesis consists of an introductory chapter and five papers. The introductory chapter outlines the context and theoretical approaches to understanding Thai migration flows to Sweden. The papers share an emphasis on local sites: homes, workplaces and community. They examine different ways that women construct and build social practices – for example, through food, community projects and in developing their businesses.

  • Spicy Meatballs and Mango Sylt : Exploring translocal food practices in rural Sweden
  • 2016
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • What role does food play in the migration process? The theme of this paper is to discuss how everyday practices in food preparation could be used as a tool for integration. Food practices effect in-migrant’s everyday life in rural Sweden and support transnational connections. Using rural areas as an example, our interest is on how food related practices are experienced by people with non-Swedish backgrounds and how they combine the experiences from their current rural locality with the practices in their place of origin. Immigrant’s spatial involvements are analysed in order to see to what extent culinary practices can be a channel for integration. Rural areas are of particular interest as the ingredients used for migrant’s culinary ambitions are seldom available. The pursuit of ingredients is an indication of how vital well-known meals are to in-migrant’s well-being. Food plays a special role in the daily lives of migrant women, both socially and economically. They serve as a connection across time and space linking sending and receiving places together. The article presents some examples of integration projects in rural areas and for one significant rural immigrant group in Sweden, namely Thai women. The food-related practices are analysed through the lens of a translocal understanding.
