  • High-spin studies of the neutron deficient nuclei In-103, In-105, In-107, and In-109
  • 1997
  • In: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 627:2, s. 239-258
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-spin states of the isotopes 103,105,107,109In have been investigated using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of 54Fe, 50Cr, and 92Mo were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV 58Ni beam and by a 95 MeV 19F beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1π neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of 103,105,107,109In were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. The systematics of excited states of light odd-A indium isotopes is also discussed.

  • 1999. - 1 SUPPL. 1

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N≈Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus. In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 72Kr has been studied and completely reported in [2]. In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the 100Sn region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

  • Spectroscopy at N=Z with EUROBALL III
  • 1999
  • In: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 495, s. 195-198
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A complete study of the nuclear structure by means of gamma spectroscopy requires, in addition to the high resolution gamma measurement and accurate DCO's or angular distributions, the information concerning the Electric or Magnetic character of the transition. This information for transitions in nuclei far from stability valley is now reachable in the new generation of Ge-arrays based in composite detectors. EUROBALL III is a good example with the high polarization sensitivity of the 90 degrees ring of Clovers. The Polarization correlations PCO's measured in coincidence with the Cluster detectors permits to investigate transitions in weakly populated nuclei. In this contribution we present results on medium mass N=Z nuclei measured with EUROBALL III coupled with light particle ancillary detectors.

  • The isospin dependent p-n multiplets in the region of doubly magic Sn-100
  • 1996
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Experimental data on p-n multiplets appearing in the nuclei near double-magic Sn-100 accesible in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation experiments have been analyzed. Proton-rich nuclei in this region have been investigated using the NORDBALL array. A Ni-58 beams at energies of 270 Mev on Fe-54 and 261 MeV on Cr-50 targets were used. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4 pi charged particle multi-detector set-up together with a 1 pi neutron detector wall placed in the forward direction. On the basis of gamma gamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level schemes of several light Sn, In, Sb, Te and I nuclei were observed for the first time in the present experiment. The observed structure of nuclei are discussed in the framework of the nuclear shell-model. The p-n multiplets in the A similar to 100 region corresponding to the nucleon pairs with mixed configurations has been considered as a playground for the tests of the T = 0 and T = 1 parts of the effective interaction.

    • Excited states of 65Ge were populated via the 12C + 58Ni (261 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. On the basis of γγ-coincidence relations and angular distribution ratios a significantly extended level scheme was constructed up to E x = 9 MeV and J π = (33/2−). The low-energy states of the nucleus are discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model.

  • Changes in early and late diastolic filling patterns induced by long-term adrenergic beta-blockade in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.
  • 1996
  • In: Circulation. - 0009-7322. ; 94:4, s. 673-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • beta-Blockers have been used in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy to improve cardiac performance and theoretically would be beneficial to diastolic function. However, there are few reports on changes in diastolic function during chronic pharmacological treatment of congestive heart failure. The present study was a substudy in the international Metoprolol in Dilated Cardiomyopathy Trial. Transmitral Doppler echocardiography was used to evaluate diastolic function in 77 patients randomly assigned to placebo (n = 37) or metoprolol (n = 40). The patients were treated for 12 months. Changes in Doppler flow variables in the metoprolol group implied a less restrictive filling pattern, expressed as an increase in E-wave deceleration time (placebo, 185 +/- 126 to 181 +/- 64 ms; metoprolol, 152 +/- 63 to 216 +/- 78 ms; P = .01, placebo versus metoprolol). Maximal increase in deceleration time had occurred by 3 months, whereas systolic recovery was achieved gradually and maximal effect was seen by 12 months of treatment. Although deceleration time was correlated to heart rate at baseline, changes in deceleration time were not significantly correlated to changes in heart rate during treatment.During the first 3 months of treatment, maximal effects on diastolic variables were reached, whereas the most prominent effect on systolic function was seen late in the study. It is suggested that effects on diastolic filling account for subsequent later myocardial systolic recovery. The E-wave deceleration time, which in recent studies has been shown to be a powerful predictor of survival, was significantly improved in the metoprolol-treated patients.

  • Radiative properties of neutral germanium obtained from excited-state lifetime and branching-ratio measurements and comparison with theoretical calculations
  • 1999
  • In: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 60:1, s. 198-208
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Using time-resolved UV laser-induced fluorescence from a laser-produced plasma, natural radiative lifetimes have been measured for 21 levels of Ge I belonging to the odd-parity 4p4d, 4p5d, and 4p6s configurations. Stimulated Brillouin scattering in water has allowed us to compress Nd:YAG laser pulses pumping a dye laser (where YAG denotes yttrium aluminum garnet), thus yielding 1-ns tunable laser pulses to enable accurate measurements of short lifetimes. Branching ratios of Ge I have been measured by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry, the intensity calibration being performed by means of Ar lines emitted by a hollow-cathode lamp. The experimental lifetimes and branching ratios have been combined in order to provide a set of accurate transition probabilities for the 4p-5s and 4p-4d transitions. A relativistic Hartree-Fock; calculation, taking configuration-interaction and polarization effects into account, has been combined with a least-squares optimization procedure of the Slater and spin-orbit integrals in order to test the ability of this approach to correctly predict radiative properties of the group-IV elements. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical transition probability values has been achieved for most of the transitions considered.

    • Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been studied using the NORDBALL Ge-detector array together with ancillary particle detectors. Evaporation residues from the compound nucleus 108Te were identified with charged particle and neutron detectors. In this paper a considerable extension of the level scheme of the nucleus 102Cd is presented. The strongest cascade of the new level scheme reveals an irregular sequence of dipole transitions above Iπ = 10+ extending up to spin 17. A strongly populated rather regular side band consisting of four quadrupole transitions ranging from spin 9 to spin 17 was also discovered. This band was tentatively assigned negative parity. Shell model calculations were performed and a very good agreement with the experimental results was found. The excited states could successfully be interpreted as neutron particle and proton hole excitations with respect to the doubly closed core 50100Sn50.

  • Effect of temperature on NMR self-diffusion in aqueous associative polymer solutions
  • 1996
  • In: Journal of Physical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-3654 .- 1541-5740. ; 100:11, s. 4598-4605
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The temperature dependence of polymer self-diffusion rates in aqueous solutions of C12EO200C12 (AP9, Mw = 9300) and C12EO90C12 (AP4, Mw = 4600) and nonmodified analogues PEO10 and PEO4 (Mw = 10 000 and 3400) has been studied. The effect of the hydrophobic end-groups on the self-diffusion of the associative polymer (AP) was found to be proportional to the polymer content and inversely related to the temperature. The variation of the AP self-diffusion coefficient follows an Arrhenius behavior. The resulting apparent activation energies, Ea, increase with polymer content from 15 to 55 kJ/mol in the range 0.5−50 wt % for AP9, whereas the parent PEO10 shows an almost constant Ea of about 25 kJ/mol in the same concentration range. Activation energies derived from self-diffusion and low shear viscosity measurements were found to be quite similar. The distribution of self-diffusion coefficients often observed in AP systems is discussed in terms of distribution of aggregate sizes at low AP content and homogeneity of the network at higher contents. The residence time of an AP monomer in a hydrophobic domain was estimated as 0.1 ms at 25 °C and decreases with temperature. Also included are turbidity measurements on the AP systems.

  • Bulk and surface electronic structure of InAs(110)
  • 1998
  • In: Surface Science. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 398:3, s. 395-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The InAs(110) cleavage surface has been investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. A separation between the In 4d(5/2) bulk component and the valence band maximum of 16.8 eV is found to be consistent with normal emission spectra. Experimental energy band dispersions, E-i(k), for the four bulk valence bands are established along the Sigma-line of the bulk Brillouin zone. A bulk band structure calculation utilizing the augmented plane-wave method is made. The experimental and calculated E-i(k) dispersions are found to be in good agreement with each other. E-i(k(parallel to)) dispersions for two surface-related structures are established along the lines <(Gamma)over bar>-(M) over bar and (Y) over bar-(M) over bar of the surface Brillouin zone. • High prevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in patients with cardiovascular disease and in middle-aged blood donors.
  • 1998
  • In: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 178:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) demonstrated the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae-specific DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). PBMC samples were obtained from 103 consecutive patients (62 male, 41 female) aged 22-85 years (mean, 64) admitted for coronary angiography because of suspected coronary heart disease and from 52 blood donors (43 male, 9 female) aged 40-64 years (mean, 49). Of the 101 evaluable patients, 60 (59%) were identified by nPCR assay as C. pneumoniae DNA carriers; C. pneumoniae-specific microimmunofluorescence (MIF) serology confirmed exposure to the bacterium in 57 (95%) of the 60 nPCR-positive patients. Among the 52 blood donors, the nPCR assay identified 24 (46%) C. pneumoniae DNA carriers, all of whom were positive by C. pneumoniae-specific serology. Thirty-two patients (32%) and 23 blood donors (44%) were MIF antibody-positive but repeatedly nPCR-negative; Bartonella henselae- or Bartonella quintana-specific antibodies were not detected among any of these subjects. In this study, C. pneumoniae DNA was common in PBMC of patients with coronary heart disease and in middle-aged blood donors.

  • 1998
  • In: Physics Letters B. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 437:3-4, s. 236-242
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High spin states in the neutron deficient nucleus 109Te have been populated with the 58Ni+54Fe reaction at 220 MeV and investigated through γ-spectroscopy methods at the GASP spectrometer making use of reaction channel selection with the ISIS Si-ball. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of ≈12.1 MeV. The spins and parities of the observed levels are assigned tentatively supporting the identification of two bands of opposite parity connected by strong dipole transitions inferred to be of E1 character. Octupole correlations in 109Te induced by rotation are suggested as the cause of this effect.
