  • Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX Collaboration
  • 2005
  • In: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 757:1-2, s. 184-283
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (PT), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, nonstatistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high PT. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.

  • Evolution of Organic Aerosols in the Atmosphere
  • 2009
  • In: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 326:5959, s. 1525-1529
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Organic aerosol (OA) particles affect climate forcing and human health, but their sources and evolution remain poorly characterized. We present a unifying model framework describing the atmospheric evolution of OA that is constrained by high-time-resolution measurements of its composition, volatility, and oxidation state. OA and OA precursor gases evolve by becoming increasingly oxidized, less volatile, and more hygroscopic, leading to the formation of oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA), with concentrations comparable to those of sulfate aerosol throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Our model framework captures the dynamic aging behavior observed in both the atmosphere and laboratory: It can serve as a basis for improving parameterizations in regional and global models.

  • Amerindian ancestry in Argentina is associated with increased risk for systemic lupus erythematosus
  • 2008
  • In: Genes and Immunity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1466-4879 .- 1476-5470. ; 9:4, s. 389-393
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Previous studies have demonstrated that in admixed populations, West African ancestry is associated with an increased prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the current study, the effect of Amerindian ancestry in SLE was examined in an admixed population in Argentina. The Argentine population is predominantly European with approximately 20% Amerindian admixture, and a very small (<2%) contribution from West Africa. The results indicate that Amerindian admixture in this population is associated with a substantial increase in SLE susceptibility risk (Odds Ratio=7.94, P=0.00006). This difference was not due to known demographic factors, including site of collection, age and gender. In addition, there were trends towards significance for Amerindian ancestry influencing renal disease, age of onset and anti-SSA antibodies. These studies suggest that populations with Amerindian admixture, like those with West African admixture, should be considered in future studies to identify additional allelic variants that predispose to SLE.

  • Localization via ultra-wideband radios: A look at positioning aspects of future sensor networks
  • 2005
  • In: IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. - 1053-5888. ; 22:4, s. 70-84
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • UWB technology provides an excellent means for wireless positioning due to its high resolution capability in the time domain. Its ability to resolve multipath components makes it possible to obtain accurate location estimates without the need for complex estimation algorithms. In this article, theoretical limits for TOA estimation and TOA-based location estimation for UWB systems have been considered. Due to the complexity of the optimal schemes, suboptimal but practical alternatives have been emphasized. Performance limits for hybrid TOA/SS and TDOA/SS schemes have also been considered. Although the fundamental mechanisms for localization, including AOA-, TOA-, TDOA-, and SS-based methods, apply to all radio air interface, some positioning techniques are favored by UWB-based systems using ultrawide bandwidths.

  • Association of systemic lupus erythematosus with C8orf13-BLK and ITGAM-ITGAX.
  • 2008
  • In: New England Journal of Medicine. - : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 358:9, s. 900-909
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a clinically heterogeneous disease in which the risk of disease is influenced by complex genetic and environmental contributions. Alleles of HLA-DRB1, IRF5, and STAT4are established susceptibility genes; there is strong evidence for the existence of additional risk loci.METHODS: We genotyped more than 500,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA samples from 1311 case subjects with SLE and 1783 control subjects; all subjects were North Americans of European descent. Genotypes from 1557 additional control subjects were obtained from public data repositories. We measured the association between the SNPs and SLE after applying strict quality-control filters to reduce technical artifacts and to correct for the presence of population stratification. Replication of the top loci was performed in 793 case subjects and 857 control subjects from Sweden.RESULTS: Genetic variation in the region upstream from the transcription initiation site of the gene encoding B lymphoid tyrosine kinase (BLK) and C8orf13 (chromosome 8p23.1) was associated with disease risk in both the U.S. and Swedish case–control series (rs13277113; odds ratio, 1.39; P=1×10−10) and also with altered levels of messenger RNA in B-cell lines. In addition, variants on chromosome 16p11.22, near the genes encoding integrin alpha M (ITGAM, or CD11b) and integrin alpha X (ITGAX), were associated with SLE in the combined sample (rs11574637; odds ratio, 1.33; P=3×10−11).

  • Pressure-induced polymerization of nano- and submicrometer C60 rods into a rhombohedral phase
  • 2006
  • In: Chemical Physics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0009-2614. ; 423:1-3, s. 215-219
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • C-60 rods with nano- and submicrometer dimensions were polymerized at 4.5 GPa and 973 K. Raman spectroscopy showed that the material transformed into a rhombohedral polymeric structure under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions. The HPHT polymerized samples keep the original rod shape. The position dependence of photoluminescence (PL) spectra have been studied on the rhombohedral polymer C60 rods at room temperature. The intensity of the 1.74 eV peak from the rhombohedral phase varies systematically between the edge of and the middle of the rod. Our results indicate that the 1.74 eV peak originates from surface defects.

  • Hydrogen storage behavior in C15 Laves phase compound TiCr2 by first principles
  • 2009
  • In: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 105:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Hydrogen storage in TiCr2 alloy of AB(2) type with C15 Laves phase structure has been studied using density functional theory and plane-wave pseudopotential technique. The H atom interacts stronger with Cr atoms than with Ti and tends to occupy the g (2A2B) site due to the largest interstitial space. The g sites together with e (1A3B) sites form a three-dimensional clathratelike network, providing a diffusion pathway for H atoms, and the energy barriers for the H diffusion along these paths were computed. Interaction between two interstitial H atoms inside the TiCr2 lattice can be considered as a screened Coulomb repulsion, which seems to control the maximum hydrogen content in the metal hydrides. The absorption energies and electronic structures of metal hydrides TiCr2Hx with x=0.5-12 have been computed, and the theoretical maximum hydrogen storage capacity (between 2.6 and 3.8 wt %) agrees with experiments. The effects of the lattice expansion due to hydrogen absorption of different amounts have also been investigated.

  • Expression and function of the LIM homeobox containing genes Lhx3 and Lhx4 in the mouse placenta
  • 2008
  • In: Developmental Dynamics. - : Wiley. - 1058-8388 .- 1097-0177. ; 237:5, s. 1517-1525
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The LIM homeobox containing genes of the LIM-3 group, Lhx3 and Lhx4, are critical for normal development. Both genes are involved in the formation of the pituitary and the motoneuron system and loss of either gene causes perinatal lethality. Previous studies had shown that Lhx3 is overexpressed in hyperplastic placentas of mouse interspecies hybrids. To determine the role of LHX3 in the mouse placenta, we performed expression and function analyses. Our results show that Lhx3 exhibits specific spatial and temporal expression in the mouse placenta. However, deletion of Lhx3 does not produce a placental phenotype. To test whether this is due to functional substitution by Lhx4, we performed a phenotype analysis of Lhx3-/-; Lhx4-/- double-mutant placentas. A subset of Lhx3-/-; Lhx4-/- placentas exhibited abnormal structure of the labyrinth. However, absence of both LIM-3 genes did not interfere with placental transport nor consistently with expression of target genes such as Gnrhr. Thus, LHX3 and LHX4 appear to be dispensable for placental development and function.

  • Superior neovascularization and muscle regeneration in ischemic skeletal muscles following VEGF gene transfer by rAAV1 pseudotyped vectors
  • 2005
  • In: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-2104 .- 0006-291X. ; 336:1, s. 287-298
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (rAAV2) vector has been widely employed for gene therapy. Recent progress suggests that the new serotypes of AAV showed a better performance than did AAV2 in normal tissues. Here, we evaluate the potential role of human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene transfer using rAAV vector pseudotyped with serotype I capsid proteins (rAAV1) in the treatment of muscle ischemia. In ischemic skeletal muscles, the rAAV1-LacZ vector allowed higher level, broader distribution, and long-lasting gene expression compared with the rAAV2-LacZ vector. Muscle VEGF165 production following the rAAV1-VEGF165 vector injection was 5-10 times higher than that following the rAAV2-VEGF165 vector injection. VEGF165 production mediated by the rAAV1-VEGF165 vector stimulated a large set of neovascularization with relatively mature vascular structures and enhanced muscle regeneration in the ischemic skeletal muscles. Thus, the rAAV1-NEGF165 vector mediated gene transfer may be a therapeutic approach to peripheral vascular diseases.
