- Syftet med min artikel är att analysera Tomas Tranströmers poesi med utgångspunkt från hans religiösa världsbild. Många av Tranströmers dikter har existentiella och religiösa undertoner vilket gör att en läsning med utgångspunkt från hans religiösa världsbild, inte minst dess förankring i den bibliska tankevärlden, till en fruktbar uppgift. Artikeln är en analys av den religiösa världsbild som framskymtar i Tranströmers dikter, men tonvikten ligger på Gamla testamentets gudsbilder och livsvärldar. Artikeln innehåller en egen tolkning av dikten romanska bågar, där epifanin jämföres med andra gudsmöten i bibeln, inte minst från Gamla testamentet. Gudsmötet med Elia analyseras här som en viktig parallellberättelse. Tolkningen förutsätter akademikern Tranströmers stora beläsenhet, inte minst hans studier av religionshistoria och psykologi vid Stockholms högskola. Jag har använt den franske litteraturteoretikern Michael Riffaterres strukturalistiska teori som det främsta teoretiska perspektivet i min studie. Filosofen Martin Buber har gett mig relevanta analysredskap och metodologiska utgångspunkter, inte minst hans användning av "jag och du-perspektiv" och "jag och det-perspektiv".

- This article argues that holistic ecocentrism unnecessarily introduces elements to explain why we ought to halt biodiversity loss. I suggest that atomistic accounts can justify the same conclusion by utilising fewer elements. Hence, why we ought to preserve biodiversity can be made reasonable without adding elements such as intrinsic values of ecosystems or moral obligations to conserve collectives of organisms. Between two equally good explanations of the same phenomenon, the explanation utilising fewer elements, which speaks in favour of atomistic accounts, will be the better one.

- Under 1900-talet har stora förändringar skett i synen på buddhistisk meditation. Från att ha varit en övning som bara ägt rum på kloster och bland ett fåtal munkar, har både ordinerade lärare och lekmannalärare börjat lära ut meditation till lekfolk. Meditation har kommit att framställas som själva hjärtat i buddhistiska traditioner, och som det element som kan isoleras och tas ur sitt religiösa sammanhang för att sedan läras ut i en sekulär inramning. Därigenom har meditation kommit att bli det enskilt viktigaste bidraget från buddhistiska traditioner till de nya former av andlighet och religiositet som den svenska majoritetsbefolkningen kommer i kontakt med. Praktiken återfinns även i de terapiformer som numera erbjuds inom svensk sjukvård, där mindfulness-baserade terapier snabbt har ökat i popularitet de senaste åren. Syftet med avhandlingen Insikt och närvaro är att undersöka på vilket sätt en religiös tradition förändras när den överförs till en ny kontext; hur den emottas och införlivas i sin nya kontext samt hur enskilda individer i Sverige uppfattar och använder sig av denna tradition. Det görs genom att belysa utvecklingen av insiktsmeditation, vipassana, som också är känt som satipatthana. I fokus står det meditativa arvet från den burmesiske lekmannaläraren U Ba Khin, en meditationsmetod som har blivit globaliserad framför allt genom hans indiske elev S. N. Goenka. Denna specifika burmesiska meditationsmetod kan även spåras i flera av de sekulära mindfulnessbaserade terapier som används i terapeutiska och medicinska sammanhang. Förutom att bidra till förståelsen av och för nya buddhistiska rörelseer, buddhistisk meditation och religionsbyten i det nutida svenska samhället, vill studien medverka till en fördjupad kritisk diskussion kring mindfulness. Som sådan kan den även tjäna som reflektionsunderlag för psykologer och andra som är verksamma inom den medicinska sektorn där mindfulness börjat introducerats inom svensk sjukvård.

- On a mountain hill outside Fredrika, a small village in the rural north of Sweden, a standing Buddha statue and the seated statue of Luang Pho Thuat invoke reverence from visiting Buddhists. The plans of a large-scale temple and meditation centre have also invoked hope of religious tourism and economic growth in an area highly affected by depopulation. The Temple Mount, as it is referred to locally, has, on the one hand, become a source of religious power, not only for Thai Buddhist pilgrims, but also for other religious networks that has established themselves in the area. On the other hand, Fredrika has also become a contested religious space. The article discusses the background of the Temple Mount as well as contrasting examples of usual establishment patterns of Thai Buddhist temples in Sweden, highlighting translocal religious activity at Fredrika, showing how diaspora Thai Buddhism becomes intertwined with other religious networks.

- Denna rapport sammanfattar resultaten av forskningsprogrammet ”Det tidiga klosterväsendet och den antika bildningen”, som pågick åren 2009-2015. Rapporten är författad av programmets forskningsledare Samuel Rubenson, men bygger på det omfattande arbete som gjorts av programmets olika forskare: Elin Andersson, Anahit Avagyan, Jesper Blid Kullberg, Karin Kulneff-Eriksson, Britt Dahlman, Bo Holmberg, Lillian Larsen, Henrik Rydell Johnsén, Per Rönnegård, David Westberg, Andreas Westergren, Jason Zaborowski och Johan Åhlfeldt. Frågorna om klosterväsendets ursprung och hur dess uppkomst ska förklaras, frågor som sysselsatt forskare i århundraden, har genom vårt forskningsprogram fått en rad nya och för många oväntade svar. Medan tidigare forskning överlag sett framväxten av klosterväsende och monastiskt liv som en radikal kristen uppgörelse med det antika samhället, har vi påvisat en tydlig kontinuitet med antiken, inte minst vad gäller bildningsideal och utbildningstradition. Medan tidigare forskning sökt klosterväsendets rötter i äldre egyptisk religion, i hellenistisk judendom eller i en social protest mot samhällsordning och makthavare, har vi funnit ett tydligt samband med den antika skoltraditionen och filosofskolornas ideal. Närstudiet av fynden från utgrävningar och undersökningar av tidiga kloster, liksom en ingående litterär analys av en rad tidiga monastiska texter, har resulterat i oväntade belägg för skolverksamhet i de tidiga egyptiska klostren, liksom en påfallande kontinuitet med antika traditioner i den undervisning som bevarats i det litterära materialet. Genom att etablera denna kontinuitet med den antika bildningstraditionen och dess ideal har det också blivit tydligt på vilka sätt det tidiga klosterväsendet använder och förändrar bildningstraditionen och synen på bildning. De arkeologiska fynden och de tidiga monastiska texter, visar hur bibeltexter anpassas till en äldre pedagogisk tradition där de ersätter antika sentenser. Bibelcitaten i undervisningstexterna ger efterhand plats för monastiska sentenser. De ideal och övningar som klosterväsendet i hög grad antingen direkt eller indirekt förde vidare från filosofskolorna, ges i de tidiga monastiska texterna bibliska referenser, som också innebär tydliga förskjutningar. Studiet av återanvändningen av antika samlingar av sentenser och berättelser visar den starka kontinuiteten i såväl form som innehåll, men också intressanta förändringar som sker när texterna reviderats. Studiet av hur de tidiga klostren och deras ledande gestalter beskrivs har visat på starka samband med såväl äldre biografisk litteratur som skildringar av den ideala staden. Den spänning som finns här, liksom inom filosofin, mellan den radikale av omvärlden oberoende hjälten och den i staden förankrade ledaren, avtecknar sig också i skildringarna av munkarna, där den oskolade eremiten ställs sida vid sida med klosterledaren. Våra resultat innebär att det har blivit svårare att fastställa när klosterväsendet hade sin begynnelse. Det framstår alltmer som en gradvis utveckling av flera olika tendenser och förändringar i det senantika samhället. Av avgörande betydelse för det tidiga klosterväsendet var den sammansmältning av det antika bildningsidealet och de bibliska texterna som kom till uttryck i alexandrinsk judisk och kristen teologi under de första århundradena och som under 300- och 400-talen påtagligt berikades av samtida grekisk-romersk filosofi och litteratur. Genom att kyrkan gavs officiell ställning och kristen tro accepterades skapades förutsättningar för förändrade former av social gemenskap och nya utbildningsvägar. Samtidigt som dessa innebar att det antika arvet ikläddes en delvis ny dräkt, innebar det också ett slags demokratisering. I klostren kunde grupper som tidigare stått utanför skolvärlden få undervisning, en undervisning som den snabbt växande kyrkan var i stort behov av. Genom vår forskning har den endimensionella bilden av den typiske ökenfadern, det monastiska livets pionjär, förändrats på ett djupgående sätt. Bilden av den radikale obildade munken som inspirerad av bibelord lämnar allt och ger sig ensam ut i öknen för att slåss mot sina inre demoner, har visat sig vara en litterär fiktion. De texter som framför allt burit fiktionen, de sentenser som samlats under beteckningen tänkespråk, har visat sig tillhöra en antik genre av texter använda inom skolväsendet. De bilder som målas upp i dem, liksom deras skarpa utsagor, är inte avsedda att tas bokstavligt, utan utgör ett slags karikatyrer, likt moderna serier. Med sin avskalade radikalitet och ibland underfundiga humor ska de samtidigt väcka insikt och vara lätta att minnas. Vårt omfattande arbete med hur dessa förmedlats visar tydligt att de utgjort en flytande vishetstradition som ständigt anpassats till rådande behov. I de bevarade handskrifterna kan vi på en mängd olika språk spåra hur man valt att översätta och revidera, lägga till och ta bort, stycka upp och slå samman tänkespråk, liksom hur man omorganiserat och systematiserat innehållet. För att kunna hantera den komplexa och flytande textförmedlingen och jämföra tusentals olika versioner med varandra, har vi därför utvecklat ett digitalt forskningsverktyg. Genom att skapa en webbaserad plattform för analys och publicering, öppen för länkad data, har vi dessutom gjort det möjligt för internationell forskning att vidareutveckla studiet av klosterväsendets mest centrala undervisningsmaterial och jämföra det med bevarat undervisningsmaterial från den antika bildningstraditionen. Verktyget möjliggör också att följa den antika bildningskulturen längre fram i tiden och se hur samma material översatts, anpassats och använts i nya kontexter, bland annat det tidiga svenska klosterväsendet.

A Counterfactual Argument for Environmentalists to Endorse Non-Instrumental Value in Nature

- Environmentalists care about nature. Often, they reason and act as if they consider nature to be valuable for its own sake, i.e., to have non-instrumental value (often referred to as intrinsic value). Yet, there is a rather widespread reluctance, even among environmentalists, to explicitly ascribe such value to nature. One important explanation for this is probably the thought that such value, at least when attached to nature, is mysterious in one way or another. Anthropocentrists within environmental ethics have argued that the idea of non-instrumental value in nature is problematic in various ways (see Samuelsson, 2010a, for references), and some so called environmental pragmatists have maintained that a focus on non-instrumental value in nature among environmentalists is counter-productive (see Samuelsson, 2010b, for a critical account of such environmental pragmatism). In addition, Bryan Norton‘s influential convergence hypothesis states that from a practical point of view it makes no or little difference whether we ascribe noninstrumental value to nature, given the depth and variety of instrumental value that it possesses (Norton, 1991, 237-43).Several environmental ethicists have provided replies to this pessimistic outlook on the prospects for non-instrumental value in nature (e.g., Callicott, 1995; McShane, 2007). In this paper we add to this list of replies by providing a counter-factual argument, applying to anyone who genuinely cares about nature, for ascribing non-instrumental value to it. Even if we accept, for the sake of argument, something like the convergence hypothesis, relying on nature‘s instrumental value for preservational purposes is risky business for environmentalists. We can easily imagine a scenario where some crucial instrumental value that is in fact (now) possessed by some preservation-worthy natural entity (such as a species or a diverse and unique ecosystem) is absent. Yet, even under such circumstances, environmentalists would generally want to preserve this entity. In other words, the convergence hypothesis can only be contingently true, and once we acknowledge this fact it becomes clear that giving up on the non-instrumental value of nature means losing an important source for providing arguments to the effect that we ought to preserve certain natural entities.In the paper we develop this argument, go through some possible replies to it and briefly consider the theoretical costs that might be involved in ascribing non-instrumental value to nature. We argue that with respect to most accounts of such value, whatever theoretical costs one might claim to be involved in ascribing such value to nature, these costs are not higher than the costs of ascribing it to anything else.

- The Hindu Vaiśeṣika philosophers' main concerns in relation to liberation from rebirth are knowing (jñāna) and acting (karma). In connection to this, ideas of a disembodied self (ātman) as eternal, noncognizing, and uncreated are important factors within their thought. They furthermore purport a creator god who is responsible for a world wherein the selves could be liberated. The actions required are performance of religious duties and refraining from unethical behavior. Through the practice of yoga a human being can attain a mindset suitable for such actions. The Vaiśeṣikas' main interests are to describe the bodily self, its capacity for knowledge, and what this self should know, hence epistemology and ontology are central aspects of their philosophizing.

- Peter Weir's haunting and allusive Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), set in 1900, tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of three schoolgirls and their teacher on a trip to a local geological formation. The film is widely hailed as a classic of new Australian cinema, seen as exemplary of a peculiarly Australian style of heritage filmmaking. Anna Backman Rogers' study considers Picnic from feminist, psychoanalytic and decolonialising perspectives, exploring its setting in a colonised Australian bushland in which the Aboriginal people are a spectral presence in a landscape stolen from them in pursuit of the white man's 'terra nullius'. She delves into the film's production history, addressing director Weir's influences and preoccupations at the time of its making, its reception and its lasting impact on visual culture more broadly. Rogers addresses the film's treatment of the young schoolgirls and their teachers, seemingly, as embodiments of an archetype of the 'eternal feminine', as objects of the male gaze, and in terms of ideas about female hysteria as a protest against gender norms. She argues that Picnic is, in fact, highly subversive: a film that requires its viewers to read its seductive surfaces against the grain of the image in order to uncover its psychological depths.

- For the Turing year 2012, AISB (The Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour) and IACAP (The International Association for Computing and Philosophy) merged their annual symposia/conferences to form the AISB/IACAP World Congress. The congress took place 2–6 July 2012 at the University of Birmingham, UK. The Congress was inspired by a desire to honour Alan Turing, and by the broad and deep significance of Turing's work to AI, the philosophical ramifications of computing, and philosophy and computing more generally. The Congress was one of the events forming the Alan Turing Year. The Congress consisted mainly of a number of collocated Symposia on specific research areas, together with six invited Plenary Talks. All papers other than the Plenaries were given within Symposia. This format is perfect for encouraging new dialogue and collaboration both within and between research areas. This volume forms the proceedings of one of the component symposia. We are most grateful to the organizers of the Symposium for their hard work in creating it, attracting papers, doing the necessary reviewing, defining an exciting programme for the symposium, and compiling this volume. We also thank them for their flexibility and patience concerning the complex matter of fitting all the symposia and other events into the Congress week

- This paper explores preachers' deployment of Appraisal (affect, judgement, appreciation, and dialogic engagement) in preaching on interreligious themes. Adopting a comparative discourse analysis, the paper investigates two American sermons representing diametrically opposed theological responses to other religions, a pluralist sermon in the Unitarian Universalist tradition and an exclusivist sermon in the biblical-evangelical tradition. An analysis of the two preachers' Appraisal choices reveals two distinct Appraisal profiles. A discussion is then offered demonstrating how Appraisal is conducive to the appropriation and conservation of a specific interreligious persona during preaching.

- In this article I explore how suffering, embodiment and existential health relate to each other through a phenomenological analysis. I am especially interested in how suffering, which I will argue should be distinguished from the experience of pain, relates to human agency, and how suffering becomes a particular mode of being in the world. Suffering is essential for the understanding of human beings as vulnerable creatures. It is through suffering as an ‘active passivity’ that we can transform the experience of pain (or any cause of suffering) to a constructive relationship that could be called ‘existential health’. The first part, on suffering, proceeds through a conceptual analysis of such concepts as ‘suffering’, ‘passion’ and ‘pain’, where the aim is to highlight experiential distinctions between these related concepts. In this part, I take a short historical detour with the help of theology and the idea of the martyr, to clarify some points about the relation between activity and passivity in suffering. The second part, then, tries to understand the bodily conditions of suffering, and especially how it could introduce a distinction between my self and the pain I am experiencing, giving rise to a particular experience of embodiment. The third part deals with existential health with regard to suffering, and how ‘health’ in this aspect might mean an active relationship towards one’s own pain, achieved through the work of suffering. Finally, I conclude that suffering is essential in recognizing the vulnerability of our human creatureliness, and that this might have consequences for how we think about human agency as well as political and social matters.

- This article takes as its point of departure the question of how Wilhelm Halbfass, Daya Krishna, and Jitendranath Mohanty have conceptualized tradition in relation to “Indian” philosophy. They have all reacted to, and criticized, homogeneous and static conceptions of Indian philosophies, and by articulating different ways of apprehending tradition they have tried to come to terms with such limiting images. My reading of their texts has been informed by a questioning of how they, in turn, conceptualize tradition. Most of all this is related to the tendency, on the one hand, to stress that tradition is open-ended and dynamic but at the same time to speak of tradition as one singular and universalizable phenomenon, sometimes even as a reified phenomenon (“it”). This discussion is connected to a concern of mine regarding how to conceptualize a plurality and heterogeneity while avoiding a reifying, generalizing language. Toward the end I present a reading of the Nyāyasūtra and how the concept of siddhānta could be understood in the light of three of its commentaries. This reading is here framed as the practical and philosophical outcome of the reflections made in the analysis of Halbfass, Krishna, and Mohanty.

- Imaging Absence The Virgin Suicides (Sofia Coppola, 1999) relates, via retrospective and acousmatic voiceover, the story of the Lisbon sisters. During the 1970s, the five Lisbon girls are born and raised in a strict Catholic household in suburban Michigan. As they are on the cusp of becoming your women, they all take their own lives. Their deaths trouble, haunt and distend the adult lives of the boys who grew up in their neighbourhood and came to worship the girls. Seemingly traumatised by the inexplicable nature of the girls’ suicide pact, the male narrator – who stands in for all of the boys who loved them – states that adulthood is a place where these men are “happier with dreams than with wives”. The Lisbon girls function as the catalyst for these dreams and come to represent a lost, halcyon past. While the film abounds with entrancing and mesmeric images, a careful reading of these sequences reveals their predication on a host of clichés and acts of wilful reinterpretation. At its most beguiling, the film betrays its own narrative. As the boys/men desperately attempt to relive, recapture, retell and make sense of the Lisbon girls’ tragedy (to render it meaningful), Coppola’s lyrical and metaphorical images exceed the immediate function of representation and elude the grasp of understanding. In other words, the film works on a formal level to unravel the task of making meaning that is set in place by its narrative. Here, the image is used and revealed precisely as a cliché, as Gilles Deleuze (2005) characterises it. [1] The Virgin Suicides is comprised of threshold images or images that strain at the limits of understanding. Their status as clichés serves to indicate states of breakdown and exhaustion: the place where understanding ceases and feeling overwhelms. The Virgin Suicides is a film that is predicated on the absence of the female body. It painstakingly examines the ways in which the adolescent female body is eviscerated of its meaty corporeality and recast as a priapic cliché. In visual culture at large, female phenomenological experience of the world is often denied. It is recuperated only as a shallow vessel capable of containing and shoring up the highly specific male fantasy of what a young woman should be. Coppola’s film stages the logical conclusion of what it means to lead such a whittled down and brittle existence in the service of a patriarchal agenda: self-annihilation. In reaction to a cultural and ideological regime of images that is imposed on the female body from outside of itself, The Virgin Suicides centres on effects of internalised violence and anger. At its devastating core, the film argues that real, embodied, fleshy female existence is nowhere to be found on-screen. It is with this absence (the absence of a void that haunts) that Coppola engages.

- In the late 1800s, various ideas of Socialism had spread in Sweden. Simultaneously, questions of religion, Christianity and Church were urgent, engaging even advocates of socialism. Yet, the resistance to both Christianity and Socialism was considerable, and reconciling the two was a delicate matter. This essay studies the intriguing interaction between Socialism and Christianity in Swedish prose-fiction of the early 1900s, especially devotional narratives and working-class fiction. The issue is tensions between spiritual-idealistic and economic-materialistic tendencies, how the handling of this tension is depicted, and what imaginations of Socialism and Christianity this depiction testifies to. The analysis shows that the borders between Christian and socialist imaginations were not clear-cut.

- Boksamlingen som presenteras i detta kapitel tillhörde den tyske bysantinologen och slavisten Robert Adolf (Rolf ) Klostermann (1907–1983). Den innehåller litteratur på bulgariska, engelska, fornkyrkoslaviska, franska, italienska, litauiska, polska, ryska, serbiska, slovenska, svenska, tyska och ukrainska, mest rörande teologi och kyrkohistoria i olika slaviska länder, främst i Ryssland. Samlingen omfattar cirka 600 volymer och är ett unikt vittnesbörd till perioden 1920–1980. Den omfattar mellankrigstiden, andra världskriget, efterkrigstiden och tiden kring kalla kriget, som är representerad av bland annat flera böcker med kommunistisk och ateistisk propaganda. Detta kapitel är ett samarbete mellan UB och Institutionen för språk och litteraturer, Humanistiska fakulteten vid Göteborgs universitet. Det tar sitt avstamp i den tidigare forskningen kring samlingen. Genom finansiering från Apotekare Gustaf Bernströms fond, har Taissia Goriounova kunnat ansluta till arbetet med att inventera, kategorisera och systematisera hela samlingen. Detta arbete genomfördes under perioden 2018–2020. Vi använde EndNote för att skapa poster med beskrivningar av materialet i samlingen. Projektet ledde till att flera intressanta exemplar upptäcktes och gav nya ledtrådar till samlingens historia.

- När ekonomisk tillväxt, teknologisk utveckling och individuell tillfredsställelse riskerar ekologisk kollaps, vad kan vi då eftersträva istället? Frågan är angelägen i klimatomställningens tid, då vi inte endast behöver hitta nya sätt att resa, producera och konsumera, utan också nya sätt att handla, tänka och leva. Med utgångspunkt i Aristoteles filosofi påminner idéhistorikern Klas Grinell om det antika idealet om mänsklig blomstring, eudaimonia. Snarare än att sträva efter tillväxt som ett yttersta värde behöver politiken riktas mot att utveckla medborgarnas möjligheter att leva hållbart och gott. Istället för att försöka bemästra naturen bör människan försöka återfinna sin plats i den och söka en lycka som inte beror av förgiftning, artdöd och global uppvärmning. Eudaimonia är en läsvänlig och sakkunnig redogörelse för Aristoteles livsfilosofi, som i den antika tankevärlden finner stoff till nya etiska och politiska horisonter och mer framkomliga vägar mot mänsklig blomstring.

- Mit dem Begriff der Leseszene knüpft vorliegender Band an den bereits etablierten Begriff der Schreibszene an und nähert sich einer theoretischen Bestimmung der Leseszene von den Lektüren her. Poetische und poetologische, (literatur-)geschichtliche sowie materiale und auch mediale Dimensionen werden anhand einer Vielzahl beispielhafter Szenen des Lesens vom 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt stehen das (Lese-)Begehren ebenso wie die Bedingungen und die Schauplätze der Lektüre, ihr Personal sowie eine Vielzahl an Praktiken, Gegenständen und Gesten des Lesens. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der Gattungs- und Formenvielfalt von Leseszenen, der auch formal Rechnung getragen wird: Neben wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen versammelt der Band zudem Gespräche, poetologische, essayistische sowie literarische Beiträge zur Leseszene.

- Kan vi idag ha något att lära av de klassiska, medeltida och tidigmoderna kulturerna? Många skulle svara ja på den frågan, men det finns också de som skulle beskriva det förmoderna som irrationellt, traditionsbundet, kollektivistiskt och framför allt otidsenligt. Att behålla kontakten med det förmoderna behöver inte betyda att man bekräftar ett "arv" från det förflutna eller ägnar sig åt återbruk av äldre tiders idéer. Bättre är att omvandla, utveckla eller avveckla tidigare tankar eller kritik kring sociala och estetiska mönster. I antologin Omodernt - Människor och tankar i förmodern tid medverkar elva forskare som representerar en rad humanistiska discipliner. Deras texter berättar på mångfacetterade sätt om idéer och föreställningar, språk och texter från antiken till 1600-talet som är relevanta än idag. De argumenterar för vikten av kunskap om de perioder som ligger före vår moderna tid och ger konkreta exempel på forskning i den andan. Det viktiga är att uppmuntra kommunikation över seklen, viljan att vidga sina egna associationer kring mänskligt handlande, att fördjupa sina insikter om hur människor i historien försökt att hantera sin existentiella och samhälleliga situation. Genom sådana perspektivbyten kan vi i bästa fall få klargörande idéer även om vår egen tid.

While the study of populism has attracted a lot of attention in political science, this topic has been rarely explored by scholars in the humanities. Rather than contribute to the already established area of populism studies in social and political sciences, our authors take a more open and exploratory stance through which they attempt to open up new fields and directions for inquiry from an interdisciplinary humanistic perspective.

- This article investigates a tradition of consolation in order to explore rhetorical strategies and literary devices of consolatory texts. The aim is to elucidate how the view of consolation has varied through history and the impact of these variations on the motives for and the right to consolation. Issues dealt with are which sufferings that justified consolation, which kind of consolation that was accepted in an individual case, and which rhetorical means that were considered as appropriate. At first a theoretical and historical introduction will discuss the concept of consolation, its variants in tradition, and different states of mind considered in need of consolation. A special discussion concerns the condition of melancholy. Thereafter a few examples of consolatory rhetoric from various genres and historical periods will be analyzed, from Homer to Derrida.
