  • Thermal expansion of solid parahydrogen at helium temperatures
  • 1989
  • In: Soviet Journal of Low Temperature Physics. - 0360-0335. ; 15:8, s. 492-493
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Thermal expansion of solid parahydrogen is investigated in the temperature range from 0.9 to 5 K. The content of the orthomodification in parahydrogen is 0.13 at. %, and that of nonhydrogen impurities is less than 2 10 - 3 at. %. No anisotropy in thermal expansion was observed within the experimental error. The temperature dependence of the linear expansion coefficient can be described by the expression α=1.82 10 - 7 T3. The obtained values of α are in good agreement with the available data on compressibility and ([partial derivate]p/[partial derivate]T)V. The Grüneisen coefficient is γ=3αV/CV`T=2.00 ± 0.25.

  • 1989
  • In: Solid State Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-1098 .- 1879-2766. ; 72:6, s. 609-612
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The modified Tersoff potential is used to calculate the ratio C/C0 between the probability of vacancy formation at a particular site in the dislocation core and the corresponding quantity in ideal material. This ratio is given by the expression C/C0 = exp (ΔSf/k) exp (-ΔUf/kT) in which ΔSf and ΔUf stand for the differences in formation entropy and energy, respectively. The results show that C/C0 is significantly larger than one only for sites nearest to the dislocation line. It is also shown that the entropy factor is of minor importance.

  • PIXE elemental characterization of air masses using a multivariate statistical technique
  • 1987
  • In: Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research, B. - 0168-583X. ; 22:1-3, s. 264-269
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An example is given to show the possibility of using a multivariate statistical evaluation technique in order to extract more information from a multielemental PIXE data set. Four weeks of continuous sampling was carried out at a background air pollution monitoring station in Sweden. Samples were collected both in fine and coarse mode, with a cutoff at 2 μm. In the subsequent PIXE analysis of the samples, 12-16 elements were detected in the fine fraction and 9-12 elements in the coarse fraction. The fine fraction PIXE data was further analysed using the multivariate statistical programme package SIMCA, which combines a pattern recognition technique and principal component analysis. Based on 1000 mbar back trajectories for the sampling period, principal component class models were constructed for Easterly and North-Westerly air masses using 15 elements (S, K, Ca, Ti, V. Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga. As, Br and Pb). For these elements, mean concentration values and standard deviations for the two classes are given. A methodology is presented which excluded outliers and facilitated the calculation of classes with a restricted and definable data distribution representative of the elemental composition of the air masses originating from the two source regions.

  • The effective string and SU(2) lattice MC data
  • 1987
  • In: Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields. - 0170-9739. ; 36:4, s. 629-637
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present high statistics MC calculations of the static potential in three-dimensional SU(2) for a wide range of β values on a 243 lattice. The deviations from area law are unambiguously demonstrated by use of 2nd lattice R derivative. After a clear crossover at β=4.5 the data show signs of an effective string roughening up to β=6.5, while scaling is not strictly obeyed in this interval. Pure fermionic strings do not provide better fits. The effect of regularization prescription on the effective string model up to two-loop correction is discussed and is found to be small. We also make a comparative study of existing data on Z(2) and SU(3) together with new data on fourdimensional SU(2) presented here. It is pointed out that standard variance reduction methods as applied especially to Wilson lines are plagued by severe long range auto-correlations, whereas larger Wilson loops are less affected.

  • Anomalies of the plastic deformation of solid parahydrogen
  • 1987
  • In: Soviet Journal of Low Temperature Physics. - 0360-0335. ; 13:10, s. 623-624
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The work hardening curves σ(ε) of special-purity parahydrogen single crystals are obtained in the temperature range 2-6 °K at very low stresses (σ=5 10 - 2 g/mm2). Our study reveals a number of anomalies, in particular an effect whereby a sample recovers its dimensions after plastic deformation reaching 7%. The work hardening curves of solid neon are also obtained for comparison. The gravity-induced downward flow of parahydrogen single crystals at helium temperatures mentioned in the literature has not been observed.

  • 1985

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • By using the Langevin equation with complex action it is possible to generate (complex) configurations in the charged sector of gauge theories. We test the algorithm in the case of two-dimensional U(1) gauge theory and are able to measure the string tension with great precision and modest use of computer time for a separation of the charged particles where a conventional Wilson loop would have a value ≈ 10-10.

    • A method for level correction and interpolation of anisotropically sampled aeromagnetic data is described. The level-correction is based on a piecewise comparison of adjacent flight-lines. The interpolation scheme is based on cubic splines and preserves thin linear structures in anisotropic potential field data. The design of such a method is seen as an important building block in the design of an image-based information system for geologic applications

  • 1983
  • In: Physical Review D. Particles and fields. - 0556-2821 .- 1089-4918. ; 28:1, s. 257-259
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • We find experimental support for the view that diquarks appear only as spin-0 objects. When their production rate in the color field of a quark from e+e- annihilation is described by the appropriate Schwinger formula for scalars, it turns out that they must be substantially lighter than earlier believed in order to explain the baryon yield.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is suggested that very small spin-0 diquarks are directly produced in e+e- annihilation and then fragment into leading baryons and other hadrons. The most influential diquark is the charmed diquark (uc), due to its high charge. It gives a sizable contribution to the hadronic R factor and to the two-jet angular distribution in the energy region W=4-8 GeV. At these energies, a careful study of Λ production would provide the best additional test of the model.

  • 1984
  • In: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 149:6, s. 509-513
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent data from the CERN ISR on the fractional proton yield in pp collisions are explained within the Stockholm diquark model. Describing the proton as a u(ud)0 system, the observed high magnitude and fall-off pT, θ and √s of the proton yield are natural consequences of constituent diquark elastic scattering. The pT and θ dependence favour a value of around 10 GeV2/c2 for the size parameter in the diquark form factor, corresponding to a diquark rms radius of around 0.2 fm. This is consistent with earlier results of the model applied to deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering and e+e- annihilation

  • 1987
  • In: Nuclear Physics, Section B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0550-3213. ; 283, s. 141-164
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The static potentials from bosonic string models are examined to the two-loop level. Available MC data for 4-dimensional SU(3) are in approximate agreement with the universal leading order predictions but fail to reproduce the Nambu string when the two-loop terms are included in the analysis. We also confront Nambu string model predictions for Tc σ with SU(2), SU(3) and SU(N → ∞) MC data. In the SU(2) case, impressive agreement is found both in 3 and 4 dimensions. In contrast, the data for SU(3) and SU(N → ∞) differ from the string model prediction. These theories have identical values for Tc σ, indicating that N → ∞ is a good approximation to N = 3.

  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • We discuss diquark fragmentation and suggest that a spectator uu system in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering has a larger breakup probability than a ud system. The reason for this is argued to be that half of the leftover ud systems are in bound (ud)0 diquark configurations, while no such bound uu diquarks exist.

    • The bulk of data from deep inelasticep, eD, μp, μN, νp and νN scattering is fitted with a new diquark model of nucleons. The proton is found to be mostly in au(ud) 0 state, where the (ud)0 diquark has spin and isospin zero. There is hence no trace ofSU(6) symmetry among diquarks in nucleons.

    • In data from 100 GeV/c p d, 200 GeV/cpd and 200 GeV/cπ - d collisions there is evidence that the probability for a double-collisiondecreases slowly with increasing number of hadrons produced in the first projectile-nucleon collision. We argue that the presence of diquarks in baryons is the only plausible explanation of such an effect.

It is shown that the nuclear-size dependence in data is a sensitive probe of the effective target mass. The experimental results hint at a synthesis of the cluster ("fluctuon") model and the collective tube model.

  • In: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 162:4-6, s. 373-378
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is shown how future data from deep inelastic scattering of charged leptons on protons and neutrons can be used to discriminate between the two main possible scale-breaking QCD effects - perturbative gluon processes and non-perturbative diquark formation. Current data from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and from CERN on the structure function combinations Fp2-Fn2, Fn2/Fp2 and σL/σT are in line with both the Stockholm diquark model and perturbative QCD, considering the low statistics as well as the possibility of a substantial normalisation error between the two data sets. This calls for a new high-statistics experiment on a deuterium target before any definite conclusions can be made.

  • 1984
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 52:9, s. 724-726
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is suggested that the observed difference between deep-inelastic structure functions from iron and deuterium targets comes about because two of the quarks in a nucleon are tightly bound in a diquark. It suffices for reproducing the data to assume that the diquark radius is enhanced by 10%-45% in a dense nucleus because of the disturbance from the surrounding nucleons. It is suggested how such a change of the diquark scale could be distinguished from the recently proposed change in the scale of the whole nucleon.

    • Within the scope of a new diquark model for deep inelastic structure functions presented by us recently we use the existing data onF 1 ep (x,Q2) to learn about the admixture of spin-1 diquarks in nucleons. It turns out that they are so rare, heavy and extended compared to spin-0 diquarks that they are presumably accidental and not dynamical. Their number and form factors can be understood qualitatively within this picture. Still, the spin-1 diquarks give interesting structures in data and, together with quarks and spin-0 diquarks, carry enough momentum to account for the full nucleon energy. A gluon component is hence not needed in the nucleon!

  • In: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 87:3, s. 1857-1865
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The dispersion of copper adsorbed on a Ru(001) substrate has been investigated by using Fourier transform-infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRAS) and carbon monoxide as a molecular probe. Copper films evaporated at 85 K show a drastically different CO adsorption behavior compared to annealed films and exhibit a variety of adsorption sites. Characteristic C-O stretching frequencies allow us to identify small copper clusters of 1-4 atoms (2138-2123 cm-1), two-dimensional (2120-2110 cm-1) and three-dimensional (2098 cm-1) copper aggregates. After annealing to 250 K copper films at sub- and monolayer coverages form well-ordered small two- and three-dimensional copper aggregates. Formation of the epitaxial monolayer or islands of copper (2082 cm-1) requires a surprizingly mild annealing temperature of 350 K. Further annealing to 540 K results in increasing domain size of the copper islands or annealing of defect sites of the epitaxial monolayer. Multilayer coverages of copper evaporated at 85 K exhibit C-O stretching frequencies found for high-index copper single crystal surfaces, e.g., (211) and (755). This indicates a large number of surface steps and protruding copper atoms associated with rough films. Annealing to 540 K results in a smooth copper layer with preferential (111) orientation (2075 cm-1). The vibrational data presented here for Cu-Ru(001) agree well with previous reports of CO adsorption on copper single crystals, supported or evaporated films, and matrix-isolated clusters. They further allow us to determine the dispersion of supported Cu-Pt and Cu-Ni catalysts from data in the literature.
