  • Bjälklag på jord : grundläggningsdjup
  • 1973
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 1971
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Cerebral metabolic changes in profound, insulin-induced hypoglycemia, and in the recovery period following glucose administration
  • 1978
  • In: Journal of Neurochemistry. - : Wiley. - 1471-4159 .- 0022-3042. ; 31:5, s. 1135-1142
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Severe hypoglycemia was induced by insulin in lightly anaesthetized (70°o N2O) and artificially ventilated rats. Brain tissue was frozen in situ after spontaneous EEG potentials had disappeared for 5. 10. 15 or 30 min and cerebral cortex concentrations of labile organic phosphates, glycolytic metabolites, ammonia and amino acids were determined. In other experiments, recovery was induced by glucose injection at the end of the period of EEG silence. All animals with an isoelectric EEG showed extensive deterioration of the cerebral energy state. and gross perturbation of amino acid concentrations. The latter included a 4-fold rise in aspartate concentration and reductions in glutamate and glutamine concentrations to 20 and 5oo of control levels respectively. There was an associated rise in ammonia concentration to about 3μmol-g-1. Administration of glucose brought about extensive recovery of cerebral energy metabolism. For example, after an isoelectric period of 30 min tissue concentrations of phosphocreatine returned to or above normal, the accumulation of ADP and AMP was reversed, there was extensive resynthesis of glycogen and glutamine and full normalisation of tissue concentrations of pyruvate. α-ketoglutarate. GABA and ammonia. However, even after 3 h of recovery there was a reduction in the ATP concentration and thereby in adenine nucleotide pool, moderate elevations of lactate content and the lactate pyruvate ratio, and less than complete restoration of the amino acid pool. It is concluded that some cells may have been irreversibly damaged by the hypoglycemia.

  • Proton-Induced X-Ray Analysis of Steel Surfaces for Microprobe Purposes
  • 1975
  • In: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 123:2, s. 385-393
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A study of the detection limits for the elements with Z = 15-92 in thick target steel surfaces using proton-induced X-ray technique has been performed. Samples were irradiated with a broad proton beam of 2 mm diameter and the X-rays were detected by a Si(Li) detector. Detection limits at levels down to the order of 10 ppm were achieved with simultaneous measurement of several elements. Mylar and chromium absorbers were introduced in front of the semiconductor detector and irradiations at two different proton energies (1.0 and 2.5 MeV) were carried out in order to elucidate their effects on detection limits. The results are valid for microbeam analysis.

  • Proton-Induced X-Ray Emission in the Trace Analysis of Human Tooth Enamel and Dentine
  • 1976
  • In: International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes. ; 27:5-6, s. 279-290
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this study the feasibility of applying proton-induced X-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE) to the trace element analysis of human tooth enamel and dentine is investigated. Detection limits on the order of 1–10 ppm are obtained. Depth yields for different elements and proton energies are discussed. Enhancement calculations show that the effect for PIXE analysis is less important than for X-ray induced X-ray analysis. However, for elements with an absorption edge just below an intense X-ray line from a major element the enhancement effect is significant, and, due to the 40% calcium in the enamel matrix, it is estimated to be 15% for potassium. The importance of a smooth sample surface is discussed.

  • Application of Proton Induced X-Ray Emission Analysis to the St. Louis Regional Air Pollution Study
  • 1975
  • In: Advances in X-Ray Analysis. ; 18, s. 588-597
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The St Louis aerosol was sampled during the period 16-22 August 1973 simultaneously at two locations using cascade impactors for sequential 12-hour samples. The six particle size fractions of each sampling were individually analyzed using PIXE for elements from S to Br and beyond and for heavy elements including Pb which permitted time variations of concentrations and particle size distributions to be followed and related to meteorological changes during the sampling period. In addition, the data were compared with average levels of the elements in coastal north Florida and maritime Bermuda as well as at a third St. Louis site. From this it appeared that some of the concentrations in St. Louis were at natural levels whereas others appeared to be higher and linked to air pollution sources. These relationships and others in this study may lead to criteria for distinguishing between pollutants and natural background in urban aerosols.

  • Elemental Abundance Variation with Particle Size in Aerosols from Welding Operations
  • 1974
  • In: Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Nuclear Methods in Environmental Research. ; , s. 395-401
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The effect of airborne particulate matter on human health is today of considerable research interest. Essential parameters include elemental composition sampling with low pressure cascade impactors and analysis by particle induced x-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE). It is shown that the aerosol generated by arc welding operations is several orders of magnitude denser than aerosols in ambient air. Most of the mass is found on particles between 0.1 and 1µm diameter, but the size distribution differs from one welding technique to another. The relative composition of the aerosol is found to differ significantly from that of both the welding piece and the electrode indicating the presence of fractionation of the type indicated in this work in designing electrodes and welding pieces to minimize the health hazards associated with the welding.

  • 1977
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
Svetsaerosoler har karakteriserats m.h.a. PIXE, ESCA och TEM/EDAX. En uppställning för insamling av svetsaerosoler under utveckling och hittillsvarande resultat indikerar representativ provinsamling med god reproducerbarhet.

  • Particle Size Distribution and Human Respiratory Deposition of Trace Metals in Indoor Work Environments
  • 1976
  • In: Annals of Occupational Hygiene. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1475-3162. ; 19:3-4, s. 225-238
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Respiratory response to inhalation of fine particles has been investigated for the aerosol generated by welding. Particles were sampled using a pair of 5-stage cascade impactors operating at 1 l./min flow rate. The subject exhaled into one impactor through an air ballast arrangement, and the other impactor simultaneously sampled the surrounding air. Particle size fractions were analyzed for principal elemental constituents from sulphur to lead using proton induced X-ray emission, PIXE. The results indicated a complex respiratory response, including both increase in particle size due to exposure to high humidity in the respiratory tract and deposition of particles during inhalation. The response was found to be different for the element group Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni compared to the group K, Ca, Ti by observing the associations among the elements as a function of particle size in the inhaled and exhaled aerosol. However, for respiratory deposition efficiency alone in all runs averaged together, no systematic differences between the different elements are demonstrated at the 99 % confidence level.

  • PIXE Analysis Research in Lund
  • 1979
  • In: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499. ; NS-26:1, s. 1358-1362
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Protons or a-particles from a 3 MV tandem Pelletron are used to induce characteristic x-rays, which are detected by a Si(Li)-detector. To optimize the quality and speed of data taking we use an absorber with a hole, pile-up rejection and on-demand beam. Forty samples may be entered simultaneously into the vacuum, and their positioning is operated by pushbuttons. The system is prepared for minicomputer steering. PIXE is combined with analysis of backscattered particles and in some cases γ-ray detection from a 19F(p,αγ) 160-reaction. At different stages of development we have a bent-chrystal spectrometer, microbeam and facilities to extract the beam from vacuum. In the introduction of PIXE to applied fields, it is important, that physicists take part in identifying, planning and performing suitable projects e.g. experiments where rapid multielemental analysis of many samples is crucial. In Lund we investigate the elemental composition of size-fractionated airborne particles from work environments and ambient air. The objectives are then to learn about sources, transport and deposition of particles and to contribute to the understanding of relations between exposure and health effects. We are also developing procedures for trace elemental analysis of water. Detection limits in the range of 0.1 ppb have been demonstrated. In other projects in progress biological and mineralogical samples are analysed.
