• Genetic variation in the 5q31 cytokine gene cluster confers susceptibility to Crohn disease
• 2001
• In: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 29:2, s. 223-228
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping provides a powerful method for fine-structure localization of rare disease genes, but has not yet been widely applied to common disease1. We sought to design a systematic approach for LD mapping and apply it to the localization of a gene (IBD5) conferring susceptibility to Crohn disease. The key issues are: (i) to detect a significant LD signal (ii) to rigorously bound the critical region and (iii) to identify the causal genetic variant within this region. We previously mapped the IBD5 locus to a large region spanning 18 cM of chromosome 5q31 (P<10−4). Using dense genetic maps of microsatellite markers and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the entire region, we found strong evidence of LD. We bound the region to a common haplotype spanning 250 kb that shows strong association with the disease (P<2×10−7) and contains the cytokine gene cluster. This finding provides overwhelming evidence that a specific common haplotype of the cytokine region in 5q31 confers susceptibility to Crohn disease. However, genetic evidence alone is not sufficient to identify the causal mutation within this region, as strong LD across the region results in multiple SNPs having equivalent genetic evidence—each consistent with the expected properties of the IBD5 locus. These results have important implications for Crohn disease in particular and LD mapping in general.

• Genome scan meta-analysis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, part II : Schizophrenia
• 2003
• In: American Journal of Human Genetics. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 73:1, s. 34-48
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Schizophrenia is a common disorder with high heritability and a 10-fold increase in risk to siblings of probands. Replication has been inconsistent for reports of significant genetic linkage. To assess evidence for linkage across studies, rank-based genome scan meta-analysis (GSMA) was applied to data from 20 schizophrenia genome scans. Each marker for each scan was assigned to 1 of 120 30-cM bins, with the bins ranked by linkage scores (1 = most significant) and the ranks averaged across studies (R(avg)) and then weighted for sample size (N(sqrt)[affected casess]). A permutation test was used to compute the probability of observing, by chance, each bin's average rank (P(AvgRnk)) or of observing it for a bin with the same place (first, second, etc.) in the order of average ranks in each permutation (P(ord)). The GSMA produced significant genomewide evidence for linkage on chromosome 2q (PAvgRnk<.000417). Two aggregate criteria for linkage were also met (clusters of nominally significant P values that did not occur in 1,000 replicates of the entire data set with no linkage present): 12 consecutive bins with both P(AvgRnk) and P(ord)<.05, including regions of chromosomes 5q, 3p, 11q, 6p, 1q, 22q, 8p, 20q, and 14p, and 19 consecutive bins with P(ord)<.05, additionally including regions of chromosomes 16q, 18q, 10p, 15q, 6q, and 17q. There is greater consistency of linkage results across studies than has been previously recognized. The results suggest that some or all of these regions contain loci that increase susceptibility to schizophrenia in diverse populations.

• Improvements in quality of life and disease-related symptoms in phase I trials of the selective oral epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor ZD1839 in non-small cell lung cancer and other solid tumors
• 2003
• In: Clinical Cancer Research. - 1078-0432. ; 9:6, s. 2040-2048
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• PURPOSE: The feasibility and utility of assessing quality of life (QoL) and disease-related symptoms in patients with advanced cancer have been evaluated in two Phase I clinical trials of p.o. administered ZD1839 ('Iressa'), an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with advanced cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT) questionnaires, including disease-specific subscales for lung, head and neck, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancer, were completed by patients in two open-label, Phase I, escalating multiple-dose safety and tolerability trials. RESULTS: In 157 patients, 92% of whom had received prior therapy, compliance in returning FACT questionnaires was 87% (European/Australian trial) and 57% (United States trial). This did not appear to be influenced by dose level or tumor type. For patients with colorectal, prostate, or ovarian cancer, median QoL [FACT and Trial Outcome Index (TOI)] scores deteriorated over time. In contrast, for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or head and neck cancer, median FACT and TOI scores did not deteriorate significantly, and in the United States trial, head and neck cancer scores improved significantly over time. In patients with NSCLC, symptom-related scores measured by the Lung Cancer Subscale of FACT-L appeared sensitive to clinical change. CONCLUSIONS: QoL (FACT-L) questionnaires were used successfully in the Phase I clinical trials of ZD1839. They appeared to be a sensitive tool to monitor clinical changes for the five tumor types in these trials and showed that ZD1839 has the potential to improve patients' QoL.

• Cardiac dysfunction in mild primary hyperparathyroidism assessed by radio-nuclide angiography and echocardiography before and after parathyroidectomy
• 2002
• In: Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-7361 .- 0039-6060. ; 132:6, s. 1126-1132
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Background.. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity for reasons that are incompletely understood. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of parathyroidectomy on cardiac function especially in patients with mild PHPT Methods. Fifty patients with mild PHPT (serum calcium, 2.55 to 2.95 mmol/L) were randomized to parathyroidectomy either directly (group A) or after 1 year of observation (group B). Equilibrium radionuclide angiography (ERNA) at rest and at exercise was performed in addition to echocardiography on all patients at inclusion in the study and 1 and 2 years later. Results. Left ventricular mass index was larger (P <.05) in group B compared with group A after 2 years and showed significant correlation to the serum concentration of parathyroid hormone (but not Serum calcium) after 1 year. ERNA showed transient subclinical changes in both systolic and diastolic function Parameters after parathyroidectomy (decrease of left ventricular ejection fraction and peak fill-ingrate, with return to preoperative Levels within 1 year). Conclusions. Combined evaluation by ERNA and echocardiography has shown previously unknown aspects of parathyroid/myocardial interaction, which is consistent with an inotropic influence exerted by parathyroid hormone, and is in favor of early surgical treatment for PHPT irrespective of serum calcium levels.

• The longitudinal neutron momentum distribution from core breakup of Li-11 and Be-11 have been measured at 29.9 MeV/u and 38.5 MeV/u, respectively. Separate measurements on Li-9 and Be-10 allowed extraction of the halo neutron distribution. The shapes of the distributions are analyzed using robust and descriptive statistics, For both isotopes the shape is changing with angle. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

• High-order-harmonic generation: towards laser-induced phase-matching control and relativistic effects
• 2002
• In: Applied Physics B. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0946-2171 .- 1432-0649. ; 74:6, s. 509-515
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• We present a review of some recent results on high-order-harmonic generation, aiming at optimizing the photon flux to allow for future applications in extreme-ultra-violet non-linear optics. We first present new schemes to control phase matching of high harmonics in gases, by using the effect of the spatially varying atomic phase displayed by the high harmonics. An enhancement by a factor of 50 is observed in neon in conditions for which the gradient of the atomic dispersion balances the electronic dispersion. A new scheme to manipulate the laser field was demonstrated, and shown to improve phase matching. We then turn to high-harmonic generation by solid targets, and show that high harmonics generated by an intense 30-fs laser pulse remain collimated even at the threshold of the relativistic regime.

• No association between the alpha2-macroglobulin (A2M) deletion and Alzheimer's disease, and no change in A2M mRNA, protein, or protein expression.
• 2000
• In: Journal of neural transmission (Vienna, Austria : 1996). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0300-9564 .- 1435-1463. ; 107:8-9, s. 1065-79
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• A polymorphism consisting of a deletion near the 5' splice site of exon 18 on the alpha2-macroglobulin (A2M) gene (A2M-2) has been suggested to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in family-based studies. We studied the A2M-2 allele together with the ApoE alleles in a large series on patients with AD (n = 449) and age-matched controls (n = 349). Neuropathologically confirmed diagnoses were available in 199 cases (94 AD and 107 control cases). We found no increase in A2M-2 genotype or allele frequencies in AD (27.5% and 14.6%) versus controls (26.4% and 14.9%). In contrast, a marked increase (p < 0.0001) in ApoE epsilon4 genotype or allele frequencies was found in AD (66.6% and 41.2%) as compared with controls (29.8% and 16.5%), suggesting sufficient statistical power in our sample. No relation was found between the A2M-2 and the ApoE epsilon4 allele. No change in A2M exon 17-18 mRNA size or sequence or A2M protein size was found in cases carrying the A2M-2 deletion, suggesting that there is no biological consequences of the A2M intronic deletion. No change in A2M protein level in cerebrospinal fluid was found in AD, suggesting that the A2M-2 allele does not effect the A2M protein expression in the brain. The lack of an association between the A2M-2 allele and AD in the present study, and the lack of abnormalities in the A2M mRNA or protein suggest that the A2M-2 allele is not associated with AD.

• High-Pressure Transitions of Trigonal α-ZrMo2O8
• 2000
• In: Physical review B Condensed matter and materials physics. - : American Physicl Society. - 1098-0121. ; 61:17, s. 11209-11212.
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• High-pressure synchrotron x-ray powder-diffraction studies show that trigonal α-ZrMo2O8 transforms to a monoclinic symmetry phase (δ-ZrMo2O8) at 1.06–1.11 GPa. The space group was determined to C2/m. A further high-pressure transition from the monoclinic δ to a triclinic ε phase occur at 2.0–2.5 GPa (space group P1 or P1¯). Both transformations are reversible. The volume compressibilities are similar for the α and δ phase, and five times lower for the ε phase.

• Angiotensin I-converting enzyme-like activity in tissues from the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) and detection of immunoreactive plasma angiotensins
• 2004
• In: Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1096-4959. ; 138,:4, s. 357-364
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Using a highly sensitive fluorimetric assay, significant levels of angiotensin I -converting enzyme-like activity (ACELA) were detected in a range of tissues (branchial heart, gill, kidney with associated vasculature and archinephric duct, liver, whole brain and gut) from the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). The highest ACELA occurred in heart and gill (1.8 and 1.5 nmol His–Leu min−1 mg protein−1, respectively). The mammalian angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, captopril, at 10−5 M was a potent inhibitor of the ACELA found in all hagfish tissues. Radioimmunoassay showed that immunoreactive angiotensins (251.8±11.8 pM) were detectable in hagfish plasma. The validity of the assay for measurement of hagfish angiotensins was indicated by the parallelism of the angiotensin II standard curve against serially diluted hagfish plasma. Measurement of immunoreactive plasma angiotensins and detection of significant levels of ACELA in a wide range of tissues gives indirect evidence for the presence of a renin–angiotensin system in hagfishes, the earliest evolved group of craniates

• Predicting growth rates of SiC epitaxial layers grown by hot-wall chemical vapor deposition
• 2002
• In: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 389-393. ; , s. 219-222
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• The growth of device quality epitaxial layers requires precise control of the thickness and doping uniformity. By using simulations a better understanding of the growth process can be achieved and process optimization may be possible. The present work uses an extensive chemistry model, to accurately predict growth rates of epitaxial layers grown by chemical vapor deposition. Simulations are made in three dimensions to accurately model the horizontal reactor used in the experiments. Experimental results show four main growth zones, which are characterized by different morphological defects. Certain defects can be attributed to either silicon rich or carbon rich deposition, which is confirmed by X-ray photospectroscopy measurements. Different cases are studied, changing the total pressure in the growth chamber.

• Boron-related luminescence in SiC
• 2003
• In: Physica B: Condensed Matter. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4526.
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• We report a photoluminescence (PL) study for both 4H and 6H-SiC epilayers on boron-related recombination. The PL is not observed from as-grown epilayers, but after secondary ion mass spectrometry. In 4H the no-phonon (NP) line spectrum is near 3838Å, whereas it is located close to 4182 Å in the 6H. The two spectra have almost the same phonon structure with localized modes. The luminescence is predominantly polarized perpendicular to the c-axis. The temperature dependence shows that the NP lines have at least three excited states higher in energy with energy separation depending on the polytype. The luminescence is quenched at T > 70K with a thermalization energy of about 40meV. The absence of splitting or shift of the lines originating from excited states under applied magnetic field shows that the excited states have singlet character, whereas splitting is observed for the low-temperature NP lines. The luminescence of the NP lines in these samples is shown to increase with excitation time. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• In this paper, we present and compare the two different XUV interferometric techniques using high-order harmonics that have been developed so far. The first scheme is based on the interference between two spatially separated phase-locked harmonic sources while the second uses two temporally separated harmonic sources. These techniques have been applied to plasma diagnostics in feasibility experiments where electron densities up to a few 1020 e[minus sign/cm3 have been measured with a temporal resolution of 200 fs. We present the main characteristics of each technique and discuss their respective potentials and limitations.

• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• A pump-probe technique has been applied for measuring the lifetimes and absolute photoionization cross-sections of excited He states. The 1s2p P-1 and 1s3p P-1 states of He are excited by using the 13th and the 14th harmonic, respectively, of a tunable 70 ps dye laser generated in a Kr gas jet. The states are ionized after a varying time delay, by absorption of probe photons with energies between 1.6 and 4.5 eV. Lifetimes of tau(1s2p) = 0.57 ns and tau(1s3p) = 1.76 ns are determined with a precision of about 15%. A significant enhancement of the number of ions present in the lifetime curves at zero time delay for pressures above 6 x 10(-5) mbar is attributed to direct two-photon ionization of He in combination with AC Stark broadening of the excited state and absorption of the XUV light in the medium. Absolute photoionization cross-sections from the He 1s2p P-1 and He 1s3p P-1 states in the threshold region are determined by measuring the saturation of the ionization process with a precision of similar to 25%. In addition, the variation of the relative orientation between the polarization vectors of the pump and probe beams enables the determination of partial photoionization cross-sections.

• OBJECTIVE: To evaluate (1) if laboratory tests may be a useful complement in diagnosing palmar hyperhidrosis and (2) if such tests can be used in the follow up examination of treatment effects. METHODS: Repeated measurements of evaporation and conductance were made in glabrous skin on hands and compared with subjective estimates of the degree of sweating in 20 control subjects and 20 patients with a history of palmar hyperhidrosis. In addition, 17 patients were monitored for up to 6 months after treatment of the hands with botulinum toxin A. RESULTS: Before treatment, evaporation in the palms was higher in the patients than in the control subjects but skin conductance did not differ between the groups. After treatment both evaporation and skin conductance decreased markedly in the patients and then slowly returned towards pretreatment values. CONCLUSIONS: Measurements of evaporation, but not skin conductance, may be a useful objective adjunct when diagnosing palmar hyperhidrosis. Both methods can, however, be used to monitor intraindividual changes of sweating over time.

• 2003
• In: Journal of Autoimmunity. - 0896-8411. ; 21:4, s. 315-324
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Peripheral T cell lymphopenia (lyp) in the BioBreeding (BB) rat is linked to a frameshift mutation in Ian5, a member of the Immune Associated Nucleotide (Ian) gene family on rat chromosome 4. This lymphopenia leads to type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM) at rates up to 100% when combined with the BB rat MHC RT1 u/u genotype. In order, to better study the lymphopenia phenotype without possible confounding effects of diabetes or other autoimmune disease, we generated congenic F344.lyp rats by introgression of lyp on diabetes-resistant MHC RT1 lv1/lv1 F344 rats. Analysis of thymic CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes revealed no difference in the percentage of CD4(-)CD8(+)and CD4(+)CD8(-)subsets in lyp/lyp compared to +/+ F344 rats. The same subsets was however dramatically reduced in blood (P=0.005), spleen (P=0.019) and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) (P<0.0001). Compared to F344 +/+ rats double positive CD4(+)CD8(+)T cells were increased only in lyp/lyp spleen (P=0.034) while double n

• Influence of epitaxial layer on SiC Schottky diode gas sensors operated under high-temperature conditions
• 2002
• In: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 389-393. ; , s. 1423-1426
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Schottky diode gas sensors were fabricated on top of the epitaxial layer grown by three different methods, purchased from Cree Research Inc., by hot wall CVD, or by sublimation at a high growth rate. The epitaxial layers have different thickness and doping. The current-voltage characteristics of the gas sensors were compared in different gas ambient during operation in the high temperature region. The temperature dependence of the series resistance of the diodes revealed two types of carrier scattering mechanisms, impurity scattering for the sublimation epitaxial layer at 300-400degreesC and at 400-600degreesC, lattice scattering for all diodes. The ideality factor of the diode fabricated on the Cree substrate is higher than others. The higher ideality factor gives rise to a larger forward voltage change for a change in gas ambient. The amount of change in barrier height caused by a change in the ambient gas is almost the same for the three types of diodes. The value of the barrier height of the diode grown by the sublimation method is lower than for the others, which gives a higher reverse saturation current at temperatures above 400degreesC. The largest saturation current also shows the largest current change when switching between different gas atmospheres.

• We present energy-resolved cross-correlation measurements of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse, generated as the fifth harmonic (15.5 eV) of an intense 80 fs laser pulse centered at 400 nm. Spectrally resolving the cross-correlation signal allows us to characterize the time-dependent frequency of the XUV pulse. We find that the fifth harmonic has a small negative chirp in excess of that predicted by perturbation theory. In addition, by manipulating the chirp of the driving laser we can induce and measure a positive or a negative chirp on the XUV pulse.

• Hydride vapour phase homoepitaxial growth of GaN on MOCVD-grown 'templates'
• 2000
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• We report on an improved quality of thick HVPE-GaN grown on MOCVD-GaN 'template' layers compared to the material grown directly on sapphire. The film-substrate interface revealed by cathodoluminescence measurements shows an absence of highly doped columnar structures which are typically present in thick HVPE-GaN films grown directly on sapphire. This improved structure results in a reduction of two orders of magnitude of the free carrier concentration from Hall measurements. It was found that the structure, morphology, electrical and optical properties of homoepitaxial thick GaN layers grown by HVPE were strongly influenced by the properties of the MOCVD-GaN 'template'. Additionally the effect of Si doping of the GaN buffer layers on the HVPE-GaN properties was analysed.

• PURPOSE: To evaluate a simple method for quantification of focal activity in bone scintigraphy (BS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The gamma camera was calibrated using a phantom. Quantitative bone scintigraphy (QBS) was performed on 11 men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), for whom routine BS showed involvement of the skeleton. Following endocrine therapy for 4 to 8 months, a second QBS was performed. Changes in QBS values were then compared to changes in serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). RESULTS: PSA response indicating regression of PCa was accompanied by a decrease in the QBS value in 8 of the 11 patients. The overall mean error of the QBS values was 15%. CONCLUSION: QBS according to this method is a relatively simple procedure that might contribute to objective evaluation of therapeutic effects in skeletal metastases, although its validity must be tested in a larger clinical material.

• 2004
• In: Iron & Steel Technology Conference proceedings. - Warrendale, Pa : Iron and Steel Society. - 1886362750 ; , s. 491-500
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Coke samples excavated from LKAB's Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) at MEFOS in Luleå, Sweden were used to observe the influence of in-furnace reactions on the changes in chemical stracture of cokes and their influence on kinetics of CO 2 reactivity. In addition to growth of carbon crystallite of coke, alkali concentration particularly potassium and sodium were found to increase as coke descended towards lower part of the EBF. The increase in carbon structure could be linearly related to measured temperature profiles of EBF. Isothermal and non-isothermal TGA measurements are shown to indicate that CO 2 reactivity of coke becomes progressively faster as it moves towards lower part of blast furnace. The study suggests that alkali enrichment of cokes in an operating blast furnace could have a strong catalytic effect on the CO 2 reactivity. Further research is expected to clarify the mechanisms of influence of coke minerals on reactivity and their implications in a blast furnace.

Using minority carrier transient spectroscopy, we prove that the D-I defect indeed is correlated to such a hole trap. In addition, we show that the D-I defect is not correlated to the Z(1/2) electron trap, in contrast to what was previously reported.

• Prevalence and clinical associations of 10 defined autoantibodies in autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type I
• 2004
• In: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 89:2, s. 557-562
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• The prevalence of autoantibodies against nine intracellular enzyme autoantigens, namely 21-hydroxylase, side-chain cleavage enzyme (SCC), 17 alpha-hydroxylase, glutamic acid decarboxylase 65, aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, tyrosine phosphatase-like protein IA-2, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), tyrosine hydroxylase, cytochrome P450 1A2, and against the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor, was assessed in 90 patients with autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type I. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for the presence of autoantibodies as independent predictors for different disease manifestations. Reactivities against 21-hydroxylase and SCC were associated with Addison's disease with odds ratios (ORs) of 7.8 and 6.8, respectively. Hypogonadism was exclusively associated with autoantibodies against SCC with an OR of 12.5. Autoantibodies against tyrosine phosphatase-like protein IA-2 were associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with an OR of 14.9, but with low sensitivity. Reactivities against TPH and, surprisingly, glutamic acid decarboxylase 65, were associated with intestinal dysfunction, with ORs of 3.9 and 6.7, respectively. TPH reactivity was the best predictor for autoimmune hepatitis, with an OR of 27.0. Hypoparathyroidism was not associated with reactivity against any of the autoantigens tested. No reactivity against the calcium-sensing receptor was found. Analysis of autoantibodies in autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type I patients is a useful tool for establishing autoimmune manifestations of the disease as well as providing diagnosis in patients with suspected disease.

• Comparison of formoterol and terbutaline for as-needed treatment of asthma: a randomised trial
• 2001
• In: The Lancet. - 1474-547X. ; 357:9252, s. 257-261
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• BACKGROUND: Asthma guidelines recommend that long-acting inhaled beta-agonists should be used as maintenance therapy for patients with asthma inadequately controlled on an inhaled corticosteroid. We studied the safety and efficacy of the long-acting beta-agonist formoterol compared with terbutaline, each taken as needed, in patients with moderate to severe asthma. METHODS: Patients were taking an inhaled corticosteroid (mean dose 870 microg daily) and had a forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) of at least 50% predicted (mean 74%). Those requiring an inhaled beta-agonist three to eight times a day during the study run-in period (362 of 621 who started) were randomly assigned formoterol 4.5 microg or terbutaline 0.5 mg as needed by Turbuhaler in daily doses up to 54 microg and 6 mg, respectively, for 12 weeks in a double-blind, parallel-group study. Analyses were by intention to treat. FINDINGS: The 362 randomised patients (157 men, 205 women) had a mean age of 47 years. Patients taking formoterol had a longer time to their first severe asthma exacerbation (relative-risk ratio 0.55 [95% CI 0.34-0.89]), took fewer inhalations of study drug, and had larger increases in FEV1 (5%) and morning and evening peak expiratory flow (mean difference in increase 11 L/min and 8 L/min) than those taking terbutaline. No safety issues were identified. INTERPRETATION: When taken as needed, formoterol 4.5 microg provided better asthma control than terbutaline 0.5 mg in patients requiring moderate doses of relief medication despite inhaled corticosteroid treatment. Safety studies should be extended to a wider population of patients with asthma.

• The effect of hydrogen diffusion in p- and n-type SiC Schottky diodes at high temperatures
• 2002
• In: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 389-393. ; , s. 1419-1422, s. 1419-1422
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• We present here the effect of a hydrogen anneal at 600degreesC for Schottky sensor devices based on n- and p-type 4H SiC. The devices have gate contacts of Ta/Pt, or TaSix/Pt. The catalytic metal gate dissociates hydrogen and thus promotes diffusion of hydrogen atoms into the SiC, where the atoms will trap or react with different impurities, defects or surface states. This will change parameters such as the carrier concentrations, the defect density of the material or the surface resistivity at the SiC/SiO2 interface. The current-voltage and the capacitance-voltage characteristics were measured before and after annealing in hydrogen and oxygen containing atmosphere, and the results show a reversible effect in the I-V characteristics.

• Intestinal alpha beta T cells differentiate and rearrange antigen receptor genes in situ in the human infant.
• 2004
• In: Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950). - 0022-1767. ; 173:12, s. 7190-9
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Intestinal Ag exposure during neonatal life influences appropriate adult immune responses. To define the mechanisms shaping the T cell repertoire during this period, we examined T cell differentiation and receptor diversity in the intestine of human infants. Developmental phenotypes of intraepithelial and lamina propria intestinal T cells from infants aged 1 day to 2 years were assessed ex vivo by flow cytometry and in situ by triple-fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Gene recombination-specific enzymes were assessed by PCR. TCR beta-chain V region gene diversity was determined by sequencing. Several different early lineage T cell populations were present neonatally: CD3(+)4(-)8(-) T cells were present at birth and numbers decreased during the neonatal period; CD3(+)4(+)8(+) T cells were present in low numbers throughout infancy; and CD3(+)4(+)8(-) or CD3(+)4(-)8(+) T cells increased with age. Very early lineage T cells, CD3(-)2(-)7(+) and CD3(-)2(+)7(+), were present neonatally, but were essentially absent at 1 year. Most lamina propria T cells differentiated rapidly after birth, but maturation of intraepithelial T cells took place over 1 year. Intestinal samples from infants less than 6 mo old contained transcripts of T early alpha and TdT, and 15 of 19 infant samples contained mRNA for RAG-1, some coexpressing RAG-2. TCR beta-chain repertoires were polyclonal in infants. Immature T cells, pre-T cells, and genes involved in T cell recombination were found in the intestine during infancy. T cell differentiation occurs within the neonatal human intestine, and the TCR repertoire of these developing immature T cells is likely to be influenced by luminal Ags. Thus, mucosal T cell responsiveness to environmental Ag is shaped in situ during early life.

• Micropipe healing in liquid phase epitaxial growth of SiC
• 2000
• In: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 338-342. - : Trans Tech Publications Inc.. - 9780878498543 ; , s. 237-240
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• In this study we demonstrate the feasibility of micropipe reduction in SiC commercial wafers by using liquid phase epitaxial (LPE) growth. We have studied the stability of the micropipe healing by performing hot KOH etching and growing thick (40-50 mum) layer with sublimation epitaxy at temperature higher than that used for the LPE growth. Experimental evidences have been collected by means of different techniques and a phenomenological model for micropipe healing is proposed.

• The predissociation of highly excited states in acetylene by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy
• 2003
• In: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 119:7, s. 3763-3773
• Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
• We study the dynamics of highly excited states in acetylene initiated by an ultrashort vacuum ultraviolet laser pulse. Electronic states lying in the 4s-3d Rydberg region are excited with one femtosecond pulse, and the dynamic development of the states is monitored by a second short pulse which ionizes the system. We show that even for femtosecond pulses where the bandwidth of the exciting pulse covers several electronic states, it is possible to extract short decay lifetimes through time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy by using a frequency-modulated (chirped) excitation pulse. We report decay lifetimes for the F 4(0)(2) and E 4-5(0)(2) states in acetylene, and for the E 4(0)(2) and E 5(0)(2) states in d-acetylene. The time evolution measured in the electron spectra is compared to decay spectra measured using ion yield and the differences in these results are discussed. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.
